30th Anniversary Movies and TV Series

Happy 30th Birthday, Macross!

30 years ago today, “Super Dimension Fortress Macross” started its broadcast on the MBS network in Japan.

It’s hard to believe how far we have come, but at the same time, looking back, it’s also quite refreshing to see how far advanced the show was for its time, in terms of design work, cinematography, musically-blended choreography, etc.

Sure there were ups and downs along the way, but the Macross TV series remains fondly remembered for its pioneer spirit, championed by a staff too young to know and/or care how many bites was more than they could chew, which at the end of the day, is what has formed the show’s lasting legacy.  Their love for their craft propelled them to take another stab at the story in the theatrical “Do You Remember Love” movie, fixing the show’s original shortcomings, and elevating the “Macross” name into the realm of legend.

Tonight I may celebrate by watching the “Macross Special” original broadcast edition of the first two episodes edited together.  What about you?  Share your thoughts/memories in the forums!

Oshare Macross 30 @ Shinjuku Marui One

Following up on its previous ‘Oshare’ collaboration events for the Macross Frontier movies, Marui One department store kicked off its latest ‘Oshare Macross 30’ exhibit on Friday, Sept. 29. Similar to previous events, this ‘exhibit’ consists of a special store of Macross merchandise on the 1st floor, some special edibles (see pics below) and a small gallery space on the fourth floor. The gallery space is actually quite small this time around, featuring costume designs by Risa Ebata – many of which didn’t actually make it into either the Macross Frontier series or movies.

The merchandise store also offered macaroons for 380yen each, themed on one of four characters:Sheryl, Ranka, Basara or Mylene. Purchasing one or more macaroons gets you a Sheryl or Ranka themed coaster as well. I tried Basara and Mylene, and while Basara was, surprisingly, tastier than expected, I have to admit that Mylene tasted a lot better imo.

Oshare Macross 30 will run until October 15 after which it will be followed by another exhibit, ‘Oshare Macross FB7’ from October 17-28.

More pics after the jump!

Japan Cinema article on Noboru Ishiguro

A new series of articles on the late Noboru Ishiguro has just begun to be serialized on Japan Cinema.

By the way, I took the above photograph myself and it is probably my favourite photo of Ishiguro-san ever!

You can read part 1, focusing on the life of Ishiguro, here:

http://japancinema.net/2012/09/21/noboru-ishiguro-retrospective-part-i/

The links at the end lead right here to Macross World; my intention is to spread the knowledge of Japanese animation across various platforms.  I hope you enjoy the article.  More to come!

Megaroad Launch Ceremony 2012 – Event Report

The MC turned to Sho Hayami, a dead serious look on her face.

‘At fanclub events, there’s something very important that we ask all of the guests.’

Sho was all dressed up, pimped out in a silver sequin-lined suit with big dark glasses. He looked more like something out of a 70’s yakuza flick than a voice actor. He paused, evidently troubled by the request.

‘……..ok.’

Looking quickly around the room, the MC picked up the microphone. ‘So…are you Team Sheryl or Team Ranka?’

He slowly looked over at Megumi Nakajima and Aya Endo on the other side of the hall, thinking.

‘…..I think I’d have to say….Team Ranka.’

At least half the hall erupted into surprised cheers. Aya’s jaw dropped, a look of shock on her face.

Most people said Sheryl. Others (such as Kawamori) took the easy way out by siding with Grace. To have such a high profile guest, let alone a member of the original SDFM TV’s cast, choose Ranka was practically unheard of.

But Sho hadn’t finished.

‘But I’d probably want to swap between the two every other day.’

Aya paused. ‘That’s probably a bit much.’ She looked at Megumi. ‘How about every other week?’

Megumi nodded in agreement.

‘…….sure’ said Sho.

And with that, Captain Max had again proved that he was still just as much of a genius when it came to the ladies, as he was in a Valkyrie cockpit.

30th Anniversary Models Toys

Hasegawa rereleases their 1/72 VF-11 B thunderbolt, now with Fast Packs

Sorry about the lack of toy and models updates… aside from the VF-4G, The 19F and P from Yamato and the find it or suck it Bandai exclusives, there’s hasn’t been much on the toy front. Hasegawa did announce a reissue of their Macross Plus 1/72 Thunderbolt model kits, this time with Fastpacks. So if you missed it the first time, you get a bonus.

Bandai has been hinting on an another Macross 30th Anniversary announcement at the next Hobby show. If it’s a model then it’s most likely at the All Japan Mokei Show at Mukahari, Chiba on October 13 and 14. If it’s a toy then maybe the announcement will be at the show at their Tamashi Nations Collectors Department on Oct 26-28. At that same show will be an exclusive recolor of the Figuarts Zero “Shine of The Valkyrie” Sheryl, also known as the Shining Blue Sheryl. It will be available for 4500円.

30th Anniversary News Roundup – 09/14

It’s been a great week for announcements of ways you can blow yet more money on Macross stuff! So, without further ado, lets get into it!

1) Macross 7 BD Box Set art/design revealed

Courtesy of Amazon Japan, the design for the new box sets definitely places its thematic emphasis in FIRE! rather than the more subdued design of the old DVD boxsets.

Box 1 will be released on October 26, with Box 2 due to follow on December 21.

2) New merch and 3D posters

Clear files of three Macross collaborations with well-known manga artists will go on sale from Sept. 14. These will also be available as postcards and will only be available at MACROSS: THE DESIGN at Fukuoka Parco.

The cover artwork of Satelights creators files official doujin is also getting the same treatment. Again these go on sale from Sept. 14. Each clear file costs 367yen, with the collaboration postcards priced at 157yen each.

Two pieces of art are also being re-released as 3D posters on September 22 for 2100yen each. These, as well as the creators files covers, will be available at several Macross events as well as at the Tokyo Anime Center Official Shop.
