With the current broadcast of the new Gundam SEED on Cartoon Network and the upcoming DVD release of the epic saga, Zeta Gundam, 2004 is shaping up to be the ?Year of the Gundam'. Mobile Suit Gundam F91 was originally released theatrically in Japan in 1991 where it helped to re-launch the Gundam franchise as a separate feature without ties to the original Gundam series characters or story continuity. The theatrical feature will be presented in its original Japanese language with English subtitles. Directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, key creative members from previous Gundam projects have also lent a hand in the theatrical creative production including Kunio Okawara for mecha designs and Yoshikazu Yasuhiko for character designs. Directed by legendary director Yoshiyuki Tomino (Mobile Suit Gundam, Overman King Gainer) ? Mobile Suit Gundam F91 takes place many years after the devastating One Year War. The Earth Federation has begun constructing new space colonies to replace the former Side 4 cluster. This new Frontier Side now consists of four colonies, among them the Frontier IV colony where young Seabook Arno lives with his father and his sister Reese. Their peaceful lives are disrupted when the colony is attacked by the Crossbone Vanguard, an elite fighting force seeking to reestablish the aristocratic ideals of the Ronah family. Fleeing from the attacks, Seabrook is forced to pilot the F91 Gundam in defense of the Space Ark training facility in a journey to escape a new and destructive war. zeo-mare Posted July 19, 2004 Share Posted July 19, 2004 i am so happy to hear of its release in the states, i do like this movie and i think it is underrated, it is a shame if this movie had been a little more succesful when it first came out there was a posibility that they were going to animate the whole F-90 series, we lucked out big, i wish they would go back and do it it will probly never happen but at least they are on track with the F-91 and the Zeta series, i am also wondering with the speed that they brought the Gundam Seed series out to the US and how serious Bandai is with porting the rest of the saga over here, how long it will take for the Gundam Seed Destiny to be released. Jolly Rogers Posted July 19, 2004 Share Posted July 19, 2004 If they are doing it like they did with CCA and the Escaflowne movie, it will be an extremely limited theatrical run, meaning 1 or 2 theaters in each major metropolitan area like NYC and the LA area for a week or two before it gets pulled. Jolly Rogers Posted July 19, 2004 Share Posted July 19, 2004 (edited) Yeap, regardless of what Bandai's press release says about them being the premiere distributor (they must have hammered on that phrase in every paragraph, ugh) of anime in North America and all, you can bet your ass it won't be shown on more than a handful of screens at any given week and none of these will be the "large screens" you are used to seeing sci-fi and action extravaganzas on. Escaflowne movie - widest release: 5 screens I remember this one didn't even get a screen within the L.A. area. It was only playing at a AMC theater in Orange, O.C. which is close to Bandai's US HQ at Cypress. At least Pioneer managed to put the Patlabor movie (WXIII) on a screen in Beverly Hills. GRAND CANNON Posted July 19, 2004 Share Posted July 19, 2004 Great...something to keep an eye out for! Zeo, saw Escaflowne at The Brattle Theater in Harvard Square when they had an Anime week. May be too far, but hopefully they will come through again with F91. And I do pray it's not dubbed!!! Wish I paid attention when CCA was released......wonder if it made it to Boston? .....anyway.... I remember driving to Portland, ME to see GitS during it's limited release. IIRC, place had a 12-15' screen and only had an amp on some milkcrates.... what a way to see it!!! Honestly, I could care less about theatrical releases at this point, I just want the damn DVD, as F-91 is about the only thing (aside from the original SD OVA's & G Savior) that I haven't seen. Hikuro Posted July 20, 2004 Share Posted July 20, 2004 I managed to watch F91 last month off a fansub, it wasn't too bad but yeah, it did get boring. Must have taken me a whole day to actually watch this movie. Thankfully the version they'll release to those at the con will be japanese with subs so no riot. They use to do anime in some selected theaters downtown till Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust was released, after that ya just didn't see anything anymore. Never even knew Escaflowne and CCA were in theaters in some areas. However, I do got the movies so no point I'm more looking forward to watching Zeta Gundam than I am of F91...so wish they'd hurry off their asses. If I get a penny everytime I hear that accusation by people who can't even pinpoint the CD time where this "ripping off" occurs... Just because both John Williams and Satoshi Kagokura were both ripping off Wagner's composing style doesn't mean Kagokura was ripping Williams off. I think they might have planned this to draw all the Gundam fans away from the panel so they don't get any more pestering about when Zeta is coming out! zeo-mare Posted July 21, 2004 Share Posted July 21, 2004 i wish they would do the f-90 series but it is a old project and it seems like bandai wants to do new stuff instead of finally releasing a 15 year old series, but you never know with the now slated release of the zeta gundam movis. I am wondering with the upcoming release of the Zeta series if they are considering releasing the zeta movies when they are done in the USA. i am also hoping they release some nice f-91 merchandise as well, i know when the g gundam came out they released some of the old 1/100 models i wonder if we will see the 1/60 F-91 or any of the 1/100 model kits? I remember going to see it at the cinema in Hong Kong with a friend when it came out in 1991. I thought the colony invasion scene was very atmospheric. I remember it was a really late show, like midnight or something and it was showing as a double bill with a 'Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water' movie playing first.
