GobotFool Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 egads! That's nuts, Han Solo must have been at the helm. Quote
fearyaks Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 Hmmm. so it's supposed to be like the boat rolled under the bridge? Or simply that it rolled over and recovered. It's setup to look like it's rolled under the bridge but if that's the case, how did the barge get to the other side? Unless a lot of time elapsed between pics right>? Quote
NERV Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 i was wondering about the barge myself, barge is much lower tho, maybe it went right unde the bridge instead of getting caught so it got thru b4 the boat, or it cud be a diffrernt barge Quote
Zentrandude Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 from the dmg of the right side tower looks like it didnt realy roll in the water but just slide sideways in an angle when it got sucked under. Quote
Commander McBride Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 Did anyone read the explanation? Apparently it got dragged under by the barges and tipped on its side, then popped up on teh other side. Quote
VF19 Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 Kinda like when they slid ethe motorcycle on its side under a truck, and then pop it back up. Quote
fulcy Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 This happened around 1979 - check out the link at the bottom of the page. http://koti.mbnet.fi/~soldier/index.html Quote
fulcy Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 Did anyone read the explanation? Apparently it got dragged under by the barges and tipped on its side, then popped up on teh other side. It didn't get dragged under by the barges, it got dragged under by the current after letting the barges float under the bridge ahead of it. It then crashed into the barges on the other side, while the captain who was still on the boat, tried to regain control. Quote
Wes Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 (edited) Focker - How's a man supposed to drive a tugboat if he can't handle a little booze?" Edited July 14, 2004 by Wes Quote
eugimon Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 man, think about the bragging rights that captain had... "oh yeah? well let me tell you about the time I drove my tug underwater to avoid a bridge!!!" Quote

It then crashed into the barges on the other side, while the captain who was still on the boat, tried to regain control. Oh, did it? They mentioned that one of the barge ropes hadn't been untied when the boat went under. Seems to be conflicting reports - that's what's said in the official article, but Captain Michael L. Smith writes in, and makes no mention of this, just that 'he made a small mistake and his stern was caught in the current, twisted sideways and the river smashed him into the bridge sideways'. Mr. Smith was on the boat that made it through right before the Cahaba did it's underwater trick, and he apparently was friends with the captain of the Cahaba - Captain Jimmie Wilkerson... Also, just from a technical standpoint, if a cable was stuck, more damage would have been done to the tug - she would have been dragged under the bridge bow first, and the front of the ship that hit the bridge would have been crushed - looks like the tug just wasn't powerful enough to overcome the current, started twisting a little, and lost it. Hit the bridge, then went sideways and under because of the current (that's the only way for the ship to actually go sideways, was for the current to actually push it sideways. If there was a cable that pulled it under, it would have went under bow first, and probably just sheared the top decks off). I'm not trying to say you're wrong or anything - I'm more criticizing the first article, because the way the barge crashes into the bridge doesn't seem to fit how it should if it was getting dragged under by a cable that wasn't unhooked (and once the barge hit the bridge, the cable would have probably snapped - at which point if she was able to overcome the current, she would have been able to - but she apparently wasn't... ). ChristopherB Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 Definitely very interesting. Amazing pictures. Note to others: 1.) Look at pictures 2.) Click on link to read what actually happened 3.) Ask any questions not addressed by article 4.) End the day with the appearance that you know how to answer your own questions. Common Sense 101 Quote
