bsu legato Posted July 1, 2004 Posted July 1, 2004 I liked 90% of the additions to Redux, but I can easily see why the French Plantation scene got cut. Some of it is good, but it runs far too long and could have easily run 1/2 as long as it does. Heck, in the black edit Chef survives! He is the one that calls in the airstrike! That's right! I'd thought I'd imagined that, but now that you mention it I do remember seeing that. But strangely, I saw it either on TV or an old VHS copy and not some bootleg. As for the destruction of the Kurtz Compound, it supposedly first showed up in some early 35mm prints of A. Now, but was quickly dropped. John Milius had some comments about it HERE. It's a long, long interview (16 pages worth!!) but it's definitely worth reading. Quote
Blaine23 Posted July 1, 2004 Posted July 1, 2004 Yep, I saw the 5 hour edit at a friends house and I'm pretty sure I remember the first 4 hours somewhat clearly. The last hour is hazy due to the numbing effect of the 4 hours already (crazy, disjointed, multiple takes) and the whiskey I was consuming. I do remember the compound's destruction, however. But ultimately I decided that Redux is enough A. Now for me. I agree w/ BSU though... some of that plantation stuff could easily be cut as well. Also - I'd like to second the endorsement of Hearts of Darkness. A thrilling documentary and a very, very candid look at what will likely go down in history as the most bizarre and overwrought film shoot ever. I also recommend anybody picking up this book - Easy Riders, Raging Bulls by Peter Biskind It's chock full of interesting lore about the era of 70's filmmaking. The Coppola chapter explains quite a bit about his breakdown during A. Now as well as a million other great stories about films in the 70s. Quote
