F-ZeroOne Posted June 27, 2004 Posted June 27, 2004 Its long been a tenet of air combat that superior numbers is an advantage against superior technology. It might not be much of a comfort to the eight planes that get shot down for one F-22, but one F-22 can only carry so many missiles... The RAF has practiced a tactic that, at least on exercise, worked quite well - a single Tornado or Phantom would act as a "controller" for three or four Sidewinder-armed Hawk trainers. Being smaller, the Hawks could often sneak up on an enemy which was distracted by the larger aircraft. One of the best ways to establish air superiority is the one the Israeli Air Force used in 1967 - don't let the other guy take off in the first place! Quote
robomatt Posted June 28, 2004 Posted June 28, 2004 Superiority is not dictated by hardware alone its the training in affect as well. look what happened when we haed the phantoms and went to veitnam, we had the worlds most advanced fighteraircraft yet we got shotdown by rather primtive in comparison smaller migs. It had less to do with the F-4 and more to do with the training regiment of pilots in the late 1950's and early 1960's. There was a point where ACM training was completly outlawed. F-4 pilots were taught how to engage incoming Soviet Bombers with in a BVR enviroment, F-105 pilots were taght to deliver nuclear weapons at low-level into Europe. (See a trend) This is why TOPGUN and the USAF Fighetr Weapons School were developed to reteach air combat. There was also a real bad habit of the USAF of taking anyone with wings and rotating them into fighters with minimal transition training. The capablities of an aircraft are important, but the training and the abilities of the pilot are more important. i agree but robomatt was trying to make it seem that jsut because we got F-22 and JSF coming, he thinks that air supremacy will be ours, thats why i brouight up the phantom, i was the best at the time bnut it didnt mean we would win/ Shin Densetsu Kai 7.0 I agree with you. Having a superior technology does not always gaurantee vctory. Superior technology combined with Sheer numbers and volumes of resources are what wins the day in long drawn out conflicts. Of course the vietnam war was lost or not finished due to political reasons. One does not win a war that one quits. Quote
