1st Border Red Devil Posted May 24, 2004 Posted May 24, 2004 Well.... back from a weekend away at JACON (Japanese Anime Convention of Orlando). Had a blast. Took in some Voice Actor panels: Brett Weaver (from Sorcerer Hunters) was cool, George Lowe (voice of Space Ghost on Space Ghost Coast to Coast) was an absolute riot, and Doug Smith (from BGC: 2040) who showed how to become a VA without truly having training (though I must confess to not be interested in doing VA work). Watched some anime: Macross Zero eps. 1&2. Still don't like it at all after a year of not watching it to see if it got better. Got to chat with my fellow Rt.commer FuzzyVT (who ran the Robotech panel) and make plans for MetroCon to see if we can get all the Robotech, Macross, SC and Mospeada fans in Central Florida together. And took in a couple of other panels....the most memorable being the Friday night panel: Anime that truly sucks! God...did they ever get the name of that panel correct. For anyone that wants to see some truly horrid stuff you need look no further than the 2 big stinkers of the panel: Magnos the Robot ($10 on DVD now) and Apocalypse Zero (I cant remember who licensed it in the US at the moment). I had expected to have to defend Southern Cross but the fella running the panel actually liked SC (which was a relief). Anyway...back to the topic at hand. Magnos the Robot is a typical (in many ways) Giant Robot show from the 70s. Really bad animation, rehashed plot concerning the pilots and the robot....with some truly GOOFY twists. The most obvious shlocky moment is when the name of the main enemy is revealed: Xerxes Tire Iron Dada . I dont know if Ive joked more about anything in recent memory than this. So...if ya want an anime to MST3K....this would be your best bet.....which is good cause its dirt cheap! As for Apocalypse Zero...well...the creators must have truly been on drugs (my guess would be straight up black tar heroine) to even think up something as truly disgusting and bizarre as this series. It's unfortunate that Apocalypse Zero (Kakugo no Susume) had to be one of Big West's works. And it was a total waste of talent: Staff Director: Toshihiro Hirano (Dangaio, Hades Project Zeorymer) Cast Koichi Yamadera (Spike in Cowboy Bebop, Togusa in Ghost in the Shell) as Kakugo Megumi Ogata (Shinji in Neon Genesis Evangelion, Yukito in Cardcaptor Sakura) as Harara Shinichiro Miki (Allen in Escaflowne, Kurz in Full Metal Panic!) as Kazu Yuko Miyamura (Asuka in Neon Genesis Evangelion, video training girl in Battle Royale) as Megumi Why Media Blasters bothered to license this title is beyond comprehension. 1st Border Red Devil Posted May 24, 2004 Author Posted May 24, 2004 Irony? Heh.... maybe. Doug truly was a nice guy. I don't want to give the impression that Im demeaning him in any way. And it was a total waste of talent Yea...there was that aspect to it. Had heard that Hirano was involved....and I truly believe he must have been doing some serious drugs at the time....my guess is black tar heroin (Hah...got the spelling right this time! ) I guess everyone has one project they truly wonder why they got involved. You do know that's a riot waiting to happen... Not really. I attended the MacrossWorld panel last year at AX and I thought I got along well with everyone there...unrepentant Southern Cross fan that I am. Besides, its nice to be able to share a commonality of our love of mecha shows. Quote
