Blaine23 Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Okay, I've gone on and on about Sin City by Frank Miller being the coolest comic I've ever gotten my hands on. Now Robert Rodriguez is making a movie using 3 separate Sin City Graphic Novels as one huge flick. He's even got Frank Miller the creator signed up as co-director. The cast... so far - Bruce Willis, Josh Hartnett, Mickey Rourke, Nick Stahl, Jessica Alba, Elijah Wood, Carla Gugino, Jaime King, Marley Shelton, Brittany Murphy, Benecio Del Toro, and Clive Owen. Not a bad lineup... some of them aren't my favorites, but some are. I was totally ecstatic and then I saw this clip - ET preview of Sin City filming and now I'm freakin nuts to see this. Two cool things about this clip - 1. Green screen means Rodriguez has got a pretty cool effects in mind to emulate Frank Miller's stark black and white imagery in the comic 2. Jessica Alba. Wow. As a cowgirl stripper. Best. Casting. Evar. Do yourselves a favor and go buy some Sin City graphic novels, even if this movie ends up sucking, the comic still rules. Quote
kam63 Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 if Jessica Alba is nude in this flick I'm there.. Quote
Blaine23 Posted May 20, 2004 Author Posted May 20, 2004 She's been known to be quite naked in the comic. Quote
Ladic Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Jessica Alba made a few nude scenes (Breasts only) on a Idependent Film I saw on IFC a few months ago, I guess she wouldn't mind being nude again. Quote
UN Spacy Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 I heard about this a couple of months ago.....is it just me or was Michael Douglas also supposed to be in this cast? Credited cast: Josh Hartnett .... Dwight McCarthy Marley Shelton .... Mary Jaime King .... Goldie/Wendy Jessica Alba .... Nancy Maria Bello Kate Bosworth .... Gail Jason Douglas .... Hitman Carla Gugino .... Lucille Brittany Murphy .... Shellie Mickey Rourke .... Marv Nick Stahl .... Junior/Yellow Bastard Makenzie Vega .... Young Nancy Bruce Willis .... John Hartigan Katherine Willis .... Nurse Ella Quent, R.N. Elijah Wood .... Kevin Quote
Isamu Atreides 86 Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Jessica Alba Nude is box office gold. crap, i'll see the movie 50 times to see that. seriously, Frank Miller kicks ass on these books, and i can't wait. Quote
Hoptimus Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 HOLY SHITTT This is seriously the best news ever. Quote
the white drew carey Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 The best part is that Rodriguez tore up his Directors Guild card because they told him Frank Miller can't be a co-Director because the guild only recognizes "Legitimate Directing Teams"!!! Way to go, Rodriguez!!! Quote
Angel's Fury Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 HOLY SHITTTThis is seriously the best news ever. INDEED!!! Quote
Mr March Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 I've been following this for a while. It was mentioned on cinescape a few months back and I think there's a page on the IMDB if I recall. Rodriguez is a good choice for a gritty tale like this and having creator Frank Miller co-direct is a big step in the right direction (pun intended). Though I've never read the comics, it would be a great step towards reading them if I were to enjoy this film. Hope all goes well. Quote
justvinnie Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 How can anyone not like Jessica Alba? vinnie Quote
Guppy Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 (edited) I've been following this on cinescape.com for a while (great place for latest movie gossip) - I was worried, cos there was mention of Hartnett playing Marv a while back.. but that must have been a typo. (edit: lol.. I mis-spelt 'typo'! ) I read the Rodreguez actually shot a few scenes of the start of the movie to present to Miller to convince him, and these test scenes will actually be in the final film. Edited May 21, 2004 by Guppy Quote
Akilae Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 (edited) This being Rodreguez, he'd probably film it all for $100 and a few foot of film.... Okay, I know he's a few films removed from the $5,000 "El Mariachi" days... but at least the man knows how to get films made within limits. EDIT: Grammar, spelling, etc.. Golden Arms Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Speaking of Ms Alba, She, Bruce Willis and a few other celebs are supposed to be here this weekend. I wonder if there presence pertains to this film. Quote
Sarensaas Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 I think I read something in EW that Rodriguez brought in Tarintino for something on Sin City, but I don't know if he could do it. Anyone know? Personally, I was hoping if Jessica Alba was going to do a comic book movie, it would have been Druuna (from Heavy Metal) but I guess this'll do Quote

You might see one main character run into another one in the bar, for example. According to most sources, Rodriguez really wants Tarantino to direct one of the segments, sorta like they did back with Four Rooms. QT would be a really great fit. Honestly, I think I'll dig this movie even if Alba dressed in a burkha. I just wouldn't really love it. Quote
Effect Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Who are the main characters of this movie suppose to be? I've never read anything on Sin City other then hearing about it. Quote

Blaine23 Posted May 21, 2004 Author Posted May 21, 2004 Who are the main characters of this movie suppose to be? I've never read anything on Sin City other then hearing about it. Well, as far as the main characters in the movie... it's hard to say at this point. It definitely looks to be more of an ensemble piece. The graphic novels break it down like this - Sin City (the original series) - While the art isn't as polished as in later books, it is in many ways the quintessential Sin City story: tough-guy Marv finds the girl of his dreams, an incredible beauty named Goldie. But when Goldie is murdered on their first night together, Marv scours the bars and back alleys of Sin City to find her killer in hopes of avenging her death. Marv - Mickey Rourke Goldie - Jamie King Lucille - Carla Gugino Kevin - Elijah Wood Sin City: A Dame To Kill For It's one of those hot nights. The kind that makes people do sweaty, secret things. Dwight's thinking of all the ways he's screwed up and what he'd give for one clear chance to wipe the slate clean, to dig his way out of the numb, gray hell that is his life. And he'd give anything just to cut loose, to feel the fire one more time. And then Ava calls. Illustrated in B&W. Graphic novel format. Dwight - Josh Hartnett Ava - Maria Bello? Gail - Kate Bosworth Sin City: Big Fat Kill Criminals have always called the shots in Sin City, whether they were bootleggers, gamblers, or politicians. But since the first dame set up shop in Old Town, those side streets have been run by the women that walk the night. Now the mob's looking to break up the party and reclaim Old Town. They're gonna have to put down a bunch of tough gals and one guy named Dwight to do it. Dwight, he knows something that the mob's gotta learn the hard way: Sometimes standing up for your friends means killing a whole lot of people . . . Dwight - Josh Hartnett Shellie - Brittany Murphy Sin City: That Yellow Bastard On the last day before he retires, Hartigan, an old cop, gets a call about an 11-year-old girl who has been kidnapped by a lunatic. Hartigan has got just one more thing to do before he retires: save the girl. Saving her is the easy part, because Hartigan has uncovered something really bad that is not going to stop until it catches up with him. That Yellow Bastard is nerve-racking to the very end. Hartigan - Bruce Willis Nancy - Jessica Alba That Yellow Bastard - Nick Stahl There's another graphic novel called To Hell and Back, but I haven't seen any indication of characters from that story in the movie. Plus there's tons of one shot stories, like The Babe Wore Red, that has Dwight and a character named Mary, that supposedly Marley Shelton will be playing... Honestly, I think you'll probably see an awful lot of Willis, Hartnett, and Rourke... not so sure about anyone else. It's definitely noir fiction - which focuses on the male protaganists - the women are either there to be saved or to ruin a guy's life. Or both. There's a big breakdown of all the characters in the series - here. But be warned that it's full of SPOILERS about what happens to all of them. Quote
bsu legato Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 I just hope Rodreguez does a better job of editing Sin City that he did with Once Upon A Time In Mexico. Seriously Robert, what were you thinking?! Quote
EXO Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 I'm not a big fan of Rodriguez, except for the fact he introduced us to Salma Hayek. But he impressed Frank Miller, so that has my interest piqued. They just added Benecio Del Toro and Clive Owen to the long list of actors. I don't think he's gonna stop until he gets evey major actor to come out in it. Quote
bsu legato Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 I'm not a big fan of Rodriguez, STFU n00b!! lolerz!!111 Seriously though, that cast is I N S A N E. Quote
Effect Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 So it might be setup the way Pulp Fiction played out then? The way there were the different stories but they all came together at points in the movie. Quote
Blaine23 Posted May 21, 2004 Author Posted May 21, 2004 So it might be setup the way Pulp Fiction played out then? The way there were the different stories but they all came together at points in the movie. At best, yes. At worst, something closer to Once Upon A Time in Mexico or Four Rooms. Stilted and uneven. Rodriguez can be fantastic but his last few sequel-tastic efforts, OUATIM and Spy Kids 3d weren't that great. I think sequels aren't really his strongest suit - but these are also plots he came up with himself and it shows. Sin City's already there... just waiting to be kickass. I'm hoping that Sin City is enough of a breath of fresh air and Miller's involvement will keep him sticking to the source material. Quote
UN Spacy Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 SUPER BUMP!!!!!!!!! I just read The Yellow Rat Bastard. WOW. I can't wait too see this movie. Does this mean that A Dame To Kill For, The Big Fat Kill, The Yellow Bastard, and Sin City will STILL be included in the movie? Quote
Guest Bromgrev Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 Love Sin City, love Frank Miller (but not that way), LOVE Jessica Alba (yes that way! )! This movie better turn out good, or I'm gonna cry ... Quote
jezter101 Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 i'm gettin' all stiff watchin Jessica Alba gyrate!! SHE is SEXXYY!!!! Quote

Does this mean that A Dame To Kill For, The Big Fat Kill, The Yellow Bastard, and Sin City will STILL be included in the movie? The original Sin City with Marv was renamed to The Hard Goodbye by Frank Miller. It'll have the four books you mentioned. There was suppose to be another one with Johnny Depp in the lead but it was taken out and slotted for the sequel. Quote
Zentrandude Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 not sure about this movie, to me it seems to try too hard to be cool and most likey is too predictable. Quote
zeo-mare Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 the movie looks neat, but i have to say that video a few posts up of Jessica is much cooler, i take it we will see more of that in the movie? if so then i have yet another reason to check this one out Quote
Wes Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 if Jessica Alba is nude in this flick I'm there.. Yes, that's what we really need, our obligatory porn... Why is it that, if there's even the slightest hint of artistic risk in a movie, you need "Tarantino" to show up somewhere in the credits? And finally, if I know absolutely nothing about the series, can I enjoy it on it's own?(I'll wait for the reviews before drawing this conclusion) Quote
kensei Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 (edited) Damn...this thread wasn't what I expected it to be.... Because I know nothing about the subject, looking at the title I thought you guys were talking about a new porno or something.... Edited March 30, 2005 by kensei Quote
Mr March Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 Hehehe, I forgot about this thread. It's coming Friday! Finally read the first Sin City graphic novel about 6 months ago. It was shorter than I had anticipated, but extremely stylish. The use of null space was quite amazing. I can certtainly see why translating this to film would be a big concern for any director. It's extremely difficult to capture the motif used in the graphic novels. I'm glad to say that the live action version looks about as faithful to the graphic design of the Sin City books as one is ever going to get. I can't wait to see the finished product. I've been watching the Sin City trailer and that 60MB 20 minute preview video going around the net. I'm getting really excited to finally see the film. Hope it's great! Quote
Hoptimus Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 Alrighty. I am going to see this friday morning. Cant wait! Quote
Jawjaw Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 I don't know anything about the comic but the trailer sure got my attention. It looks pretty cool. I'm bored stiff with most movies these days so it's good to see something different come out. The only thing that seemed cheesy was the whole co-director Quentin Taratino thing flashing on the screen. Seems like name dropping to me. Quote
