ewilen Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 I thought Crane was only a common nickname, not official. Like Warthog or Viper. Yes, that what comes up when I google "flanker crane" or "su-27 crane". Some sources indicate that the informal nickname is actually "baby crane", while Sukhoi itself calls the plane "Azure Lightning". This Usenet post says that another nickname is (roughly translated) "cracker", due to a pun on the meaning of "Sukhoi" in Russian. This page is also worth a look. It gives the Russian nicknames of many of their aircraft, including different nicknames for various Flanker variants. My favorite is the MiG 25. Quote
Retracting Head Ter Ter Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 Hey, the Russians call it a Platypus too! I thought it was a western nickname only. Quote

ewilen Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 Shin, while hunting for other info I came across references to the US having acquired two Flankers in 1995. They were allegedly purchased clandestinely from Belarus. rdenham Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 PS---want a nice diecast Super Flanker with moving flaps, rudders, brake, canopy? From what I've read, they're well worth the price. And it is a Flanker, so it'd be as big as a 1/60 VF-1, if not larger. I was curious about how big a 1/72 scale Flanker would be so I made a template for size comparisons. Quote
