areaseven
Puni Puni Poemi ( ぷにぷに☆ぽえみぃ ) J.C. Staff/Victor Entertainment, 2001 ADV Films, 2004 Directed by Shinichi Watanabe (Excel Saga, Tenchi Muyo! GXP) Rated 17+ for graphic violence, gratuitous T&A, HLA, S&M, sex with a minor, and suggested drug use on the part of the production staff. Poemi Watanabe (a.k.a. Kobayashi) is a 10-year-old girl with aspirations of being a famous voice actress. Unfortunately, her school grades are bad and her voice acting is even worse. But when a mysterious alien kills her parents and wreaks havoc all over Tokyo, Poemi grabs a talking fish, skins it into a wand and becomes the magical girl Puni Puni Poemi to save the day. Story: B+ It's anime like this that can severely fry your brain. Puni Puni Poemi may not be as disgusting as Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, is more potent with nastier humor and suggestive child sex. Hell, I'm kind of surprised this actually made a domestic release, given all the violations it's committed. Animation: A- As it's an OAV, Puni Puni Poemi boasts better artwork and animation than Excel Saga. Character designs by Satoshi Ishino (Excel Saga, Triangle Heart). Soundtrack: B+ There's nothing like a trademark Shinichi Watanabe song to give you a good laugh. All the songs performed by Yumiko Kobayashi are a riot. Sub vs. Dub Puni Puni Poemi features Yumiko Kobayashi (Tetsunosuke in Peace Maker Kurogane, Sarah in Love Hina) as Poemi, Yuka Imai (Jinto in Crest of the Stars and Banner of the Stars) as Futaba, Aya Hisakawa (Haruka in RahXephon, Skuld in Ah! My Goddess) as Nanase, Tomoko Kawakami (A Little Snow Fairy Sugar, Revolutionary Girl Utena) as Mutsumi, Kotono Mitsuishi (Excel Saga, Misato in Neon Genesis Evangelion) as Itsue, Omi Minami (Hyatt in Excel Saga, Ruri in Martian Successor Nadesico) as Shii, Atsuko Enomoto (Steel Angel Kurumi, Yukino in His & Her Circumstances) as Mitsuki, Satomi Koorogi (Menchi in Excel Saga, Maho in Please Teacher!) as Hitomi, and Shinichi Watanabe reprising his role as Nabeshin. Given the fact that there is live-action footage of Yumiko Kobayashi and a two-second cameo by Kotono Mitsuishi, what's the whole point of dubbing Puni Puni Poemi in English? Featured voices include Cynthia Martinez (Lina in ADV's Slayers releases, Mikako in Voices of a Distant Star) as Poemy, Luci Christian (Kaname in Full Metal Panic!, Yukari in Azumanga Daioh ) as Futaba, Hilary Haag (Karinka in Steel Angel Kurumi, Megumi in RahXephon) as the Magic Fish, Kelly Manison (Naga in ADV's Slayers releases, the Great Will of the Macrocosm in Excel Saga) as Nanase, Yu Haul (Wow...what an original name.) as Mutsumi, Larissa Wolcott (the second half of Excel Saga) as Itsue and Kotono Mitsuishi, Monica Rial (Saki in Steel Angel Kurumi, Kirika in NOIR) as Shii, Jessica Boone (Chiyo in Azumanga Daioh , Misaki in Angelic Layer) as Mitsuki, Kira Vincent-Davis (Osaka in Azumanga Daioh , Quon in RahXephon) as Hitomi, and Brett Weaver (Gai in Martian Successor Nadesico, Toji in Neon Genesis Evangelion) reprising his role as Nabeshin. DVD Extras Under Construction The Bottom Line Outrageously offensive and downright dirty, Puni Puni Poemi may be hazardous to your brain. Unless you're an Excel Saga fan. Sumdumgai
I saw a chinese bootleg back when Excel Saga first started being released in the US. I agree with A7, this is a seriously screwed-up, but funny anime. Makes fun of the magical-girl genre, poking a lot of fun at Card Captor Sakura. If you are squeamish about hentai stuff, you may want to thnk twice, because they make fun of that too. I liked Excel Saga better, especially the last "joke" episode. JELEINEN
Puni Puni Poemi sucks. It relies entirely on shock value for humor and lacks any of the clever subtleness that showed up now and again in Excel Saga. I sencerely recomend avoiding this title. Radd
I would like to see this, even if it's not as good. I just wouldn't set it aside and not give it a try when I so loved Excel Saga. Bobo-bo Bo-bobobo is most excellent. I need to get ahold of more of that.
Noriko Takaya
I just picked this title up today because I am a big Excel Saga fan. I have to say that I thought it was great. Laughed my ass off...
wolfx
Notice all the parodies from Macross to fist of the north star and dragonball and gundam. Its hilarious! Definately only for Excel Saga fans. Its like the extended version of Excel Saga's 26th episode which was full of vulgar humour.
areaseven
Well, Nabeshin asked for trouble, and he got it. Not here in the U.S., though; but of all places... Puni Puni Poemy Banned in New Zealand
JELEINEN
Actually, from what I've heard mentioned by people who live there, New Zealand is pretty strict when it comes to censorship.
