fifbeat Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 (edited) What's the purpose of the removable nose cone? (1/48, obviously) I mean, it's not like it's all detailed in there once you take it out; it's just a little black plastic thingy... in fact, I'd rather have it non-removable -- cuz I remember the thing kinda coming off during transfomations. Am I missing something here? Edited March 25, 2004 by fifbeat Quote
bandit29 Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 I always thought that "feature" was kinda dumb. Too bad the nosecone wasn't hinged so it could open without fully being removed. Quote
The_Major Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 Its for guys like me who wanna rip the raydome off an F-14 or 15 mess the hell out off it, fix it, paint it and stick it in there..... Quote
Jawjaw Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 That black plastic thingy is the radar and another detail of the 1/48. The first two 1/48's had the problem where it fell off easily but it was fixed on the rest. Quote
EXO Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 GBP maybe? Hopefully! Maybe they'll give us a shorter nosecone or just have it off if they make one. Again... hopefully. Quote
Skull Leader Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 It is removable to display the Radar radome underneath. Unfortunately it was kind of added as an afterthought and the radome doesn't have much in the way of detail. If (*IF*) Yamato makes a 1/48 GBP kit, it will almost NEED to have the nosecone off in order to make it look right, the nose is really long. Quote
APU Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 I dont think its radar, I think its a gyroscope(sp) like in real planes, to keep it stable. Quote
Vermillion One Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 It is still useless, unless of course it is necessary for the GBP. Quote
ewilen Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 No, it is radar. Similar to the radar on the F-14 or any other modern jet fighter. http://www.jolly-rogers.com/airpower/f-14/f-14-av.htm Quote
fifbeat Posted March 25, 2004 Author Posted March 25, 2004 Thanks, guys. However, if the removable nose will be "useful" for the 1/48's; then how are they going to manage it for the "upcoming" 1/60 GBP armor? Are they gonna equip the armor with a hacksaw? Riddle me this, batmen... Quote
estacado06479 Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 you guys just don't get it... OBVIOUSLY, its to make the 1/48, that much AWESOME-ER... now if someone can answer why the darn things are wearing turtlenecks...? Quote
Vermillion One Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 They would be awesom-er if the eye lit up. Quote
APU Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 Oh ok, I did say think ..So its to guide the missiles. Quote
fifbeat Posted March 25, 2004 Author Posted March 25, 2004 Well, sometimes "extra" things aren't always good. *cough* lit-up heads *cough* Quote

ewilen Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 (edited) Oh ok, I did say think ..So its to guide the missiles. In the case of the F-14 you'd be partially correct. The Phoenix missile's radar is semi-active during initial flight, using the returns from the Tomcat's radar. I.e., the Tomcat sends out radar waves, they bounce off the target, and the Phoenix picks them up. When it gets closer, the Phoenix relies entirely on its internal radar. But in general, the radar housed in the nose of a fighter like a VF-1 serves a much broader role than just guiding missiles. It tells the pilot who's out there, where they are, where they're going and how fast. It also lets the pilot select targets and hand off the information to the missiles' internal tracking systems before launch. Edited March 25, 2004 by ewilen Quote
Nani?! Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 Well, sometimes "extra" things aren't always good.*cough* lit-up heads *cough* yeah I agree, I don't think it's a prominent feature in valks as much as it is on a gundam. I don't recall a specific moment where eyes lit up in Macross (maybe reflecting light but not being a source of). And even in gundam toy line 99.99% (maybe even 100%) of them don't have light up eyes. As for the nose cone... I dont think it was made for a probable GBP addon to fit better... It's clearly to add more detail (even though it looks pretty cheesy)... It's possible yamato could use that feature for the benefit of the GBP but I dont think it was included there because of it. fifbeat Posted March 25, 2004 Author Posted March 25, 2004 So, IF it IS for the Armour, then how would the armour work on the 1/60s? Quote
Reaper 9000 Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 So, IF it IS for the Armour, then how would the armour work on the 1/60s? Because the 1/60 nose isn't as long. Quote

We're not going to get 100% accuracy as far as the GBP goes... even if it's on the 1/48. I'm sure yamato will figure it out... that's what they get paid for... and oh, almost forgot... IT's NOT even announced or planned yet! we're getting ahead of ourselves here... Quote
Hiriyu Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 I've a quick question here, semi-OT: What purpose does the Yamato 1/48 VF-1 nose/waist rotation point have, when the leg armature (swingbar-dealie which snaps into nose cavity) prevents its use in battroid mode? I'm genuinely curious Quote
Shin Densetsu Kai 7.0 Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 the nose has 3 grooves at the waist. teh swing bar is designed to be loose in place. ZThe waist can turn with bar attached to the farthest grooves left or right. unlike the 1/60 there are grooves to limite movement sideways...on teh 1/60 u can twirl the waisst 360. 1/48 is more like 30 degree left right Quote
Hiriyu Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 Thanks for the answer, shin. In that case, I have another question: Why is there a very tight retention mechanism for the swingbar/armature, if it is intended to be fit loose? I'm wondering, because on my [now departed] 1/48, I was not able to rotate the waist joint *at all* with the swingbar engaged... What am I missing (besides the obvious )? Quote
eugimon Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 I get more like 3 degrees than 30 on my 1/48s ( 1a, 1s reissue, 1j) I think it was just an idea that didn't work out as well as they hoped but enough for them to leave it in... i.e. no one cried and had fits about it. Quote

Thank you, sage Jawa, for the information May I be the first to cry and have a fit about it then? Quote
EXO Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 The crotch area looks too big on the 1:60 version. Could have used that removeable nosecone. The 1:60 GBP shouldn't be the measure of standards when it comes to the GBP anyway. image from the VEX Quote
