Yamato Lover Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 (edited) I came across a closeup pic of the Yamato VT-1 and noticed something that shocked me. The tailfins are tiny! It almost looks like it couldn't fly in an atmosphere with tailfins that small. Did they make them that small to accomodate the weird FAST pack placement or are they actually that small in DYRL lineart? PS: I do like how they included Minmay with the SO instead of a nondescript copilot. Edited September 1, 2003 by Yamato Lover Quote
TheLoneWolf Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 I just double-checked the Gold Book and they're not supposed to be that stubby. Yamato probably made the tailfins like that so the backpack wouldn't flop over in battroid mode. Quote
The Nighthawk Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 Check Macross Design Works and compare the Ostrich to other fighters. It's right, the fins are stubbier than a normal Valk. I don't think it's meant to do much in an atmosphere, remember it is a primary trainer (apparently) used more with FAST packs in space than without. Quote
CF18 Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 Hmm... May be that is why Hikaru and Misa fly around the empty earth in gerwalk mode instead of the more fuel efficent fighter mode. I have been wondering about that for over 18 years. Quote
Wolf13 Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 I guess the VF-1D flown in the TV series is the standard atmospheric trainer, and the VT-1 was developed specificaly to train pilots in the use of the more recently developed FAST packs? I don't get why they'd shorten the tailfins tho. The diference in metal couldn't be >that< much as compared to the full valk, could it? Quote

Cdr Fokker Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 The VF-1D is generally seen to be dual-use, IIRC: as a trainer and as a two-seat combat unit. Quote
Anubis Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 Just like a lot of modern day D models, especially F-16's. Actual use, trainers, and for incentive rides. Quote
Isamu Atreides 86 Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 The VF-1D is generally seen to be dual-use, IIRC: as a trainer and as a two-seat combat unit. there was a lot of conversation about that on the old boards, and some said the -1D was like a strike aircraft, or a wild weasel type unit....
