Whedon's 'Serenity' greenlit

U moves forward on sci-fi spinoff

By GABRIEL SNYDER

Universal Pictures has greenlit "Serenity,'' the feature film based on Joss Whedon's Fox TV series "Firefly,'' which was canceled in late 2002 after just 11 episodes.

Deals are in place for Whedon to direct and for the original cast of the TV show to reprise their roles. The pic, budgeted in the mid-eight figures, is scheduled for a June start and should be ready for a 2005 release.

After Fox pulled the plug on "Firefly," Whedon struggled to continue the project, speaking with other nets and cablers about the series, then finally turning to studios about a feature version. Universal acquired the feature rights from Fox last fall.

Whedon said the pic will be released under the title "Serenity" to give it some distance from the TV version. "It was important that people understand that the movie isn't the series," he said. "The movie is bigger, more epic than anything you can do in a series."

To that end, he said he went out of his way while penning the "Serenity" script to make sure that it is accessible to audiences who never tuned into "Firefly."

"You're not going to bring people into a movie if you're explaining all the time what happened before," Whedon said.

Series was a space oater set 500 years in the future, tracking the journeys of the crew aboard the Serenity.

Forthcoming pic is set about six months after the TV show left off, and centers on two passengers on board the ship who attract trouble to the crew.

The studio has closed a deal with Nathan Fillion to return as Capt. Malcolm Reynolds. Other original cast members Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher and Summer Glau are also in place.

Barry Mendel is producing the pic. Chris Buchanan of Mutant Enemy, Whedon's shingle, and Mendel exec Alissa Tager are exec producing. Overseeing the project for U is vice chair Mary Parent.

Date in print: Wed., Mar. 3, 2004, Los Angeles

Yep, soon the crew will be Big Damn Movie Stars :D

Adam Baldwin has been in the movies since the 70's... stardom has yet to be in his grasp.

Isn't it funny that Whedon's unsuccessful movie became a huge syndication hit, now he's taking an unsuccessful series into a movie, whith hopefully the same turnaround. he must be a hell of a pitchman.

Well... he's got a lot of love for the Firefly series, so I'm hoping that he cranks out some Very Good Things for the Serenity movie...

I wouldn't say that the series was a failure, anyway... Fox seemed to go out of their way to tank it.

What movie beside the Buffy one has he been apart of?

Alien Resurrection..... enough said. <_<

I am looking forward to this movie, i guess. i liked the show alright.

Resurrection was indeed like a steaming turd to the cerebral cortex, but in his defense I doubt anybody could have produced a decent script under those conditions.

And the Firefly movie is kind of bittersweet news, coming on the heels of Angel's cancellation. I don't know if it will find a big enough audience to be a sucess, but its better than no movie.

See you, space cowboy....d'oh, wrong franchise.

Still, the bigger news for longtime FIREFLY fans that's not contained in the release is the absence of two principal cast members from the TV show: Ron Glass (Reverend Book) and Alan Tudyk (Wash, the ship's pilot).

Whedon's hits far outshine his misses. Buffy, Angel, and Firefly were all fantastic shows. Firefly being one of the most under-appreciated shows ever to not be given a chance...typical of Fox though. Check the DVD sales on Amazon...check the reviews...the show was something special.

im not sure if firefly would make a good movie. i liked firefly to a extent but how you going to make something out of a space cowboy theme?

The same way most SF movies do. Space operas are just westerns in space.

Actually, from all the interviews, Joss has never been intimately involved in any movie - he's either submitted scripts that were taken and changed into something totally different (Alien Resurrection), or doctored up a few lines (X-Men) So really you can only judge his work by FF eps like Serenity, Our Mrs Reynolds and Objects in Space which he wrote and directed

Agreed... the dude's taken waaaay to many hits over Alien Resurrection. By the end of it, it definitely wasn't his film or Junet's... but the product of studio dictation.

A Firefly movie could be really kickass... I'm still bummed they're cancelling Angel - it's better this season than ever.

Yeah, that was definitely a baseball bat to the testicles. Thanks for nothing, WB.

I find it funny so many of you gave hateful remarks to the show then turn around and sing its praises after its dead.

Odd. I don't remember too many people here not liking it.

Considering how bad that movie was.... I would deny any relation I had to it, myself. <_<
