treatment Posted February 26, 2004 Posted February 26, 2004 So, we're having fun over there at AoD-forums (english-dub forum) and I managed to sorta talk an interested up-and-coming new ADV voice-actress/fan (Lauren Goodnight) into singing a DYRL song. She's a Macross-DYRL fan, too. She couldn't find an mp3 of the Ai Oboete Imasuka song, but she have the MBIAP song, so we decided to give it a go and here's her thread about it including the location of her rendition of MBIAP: http://forums.animeondvd.com/showflat.php?...o=&fpart=1&vc=1 It's quite tolerable and actually a rather good rendition. She didn't mimic Mari Ijima's high-pitchness, but it was ok enough. At least it's not Robotech and it's way better than Robotech's. IIRC, it's the first time an english voice-actress sang an actual Minmay song, imho. So, just an fyi. Quote
EXO Posted February 26, 2004 Posted February 26, 2004 Macross: The Complete has a track without the voice IIRC. That was fun to listen to. her speaking voice is too trippy for me. She must sound like she's dubbing an anime ALL THE TIME. OK, enough Kyun Kyun for now... back to the Pixies... Quote
Duke Togo Posted February 26, 2004 Posted February 26, 2004 Would have been interesting if she had been singing it in english... Quote
JValk Posted February 26, 2004 Posted February 26, 2004 wow her japanese is really good! wouldn't it be hilarious to have ADV dub DYRL for Harmony Gold (BLEHCH) but still have the english-speaking voice actor sing the original DYRL songs in Japanese instead of a Robotech song in english? HMMM! Quote
Agent ONE Posted February 26, 2004 Posted February 26, 2004 The song is only a turn on when Mari is singing it. Quote
Sumdumgai Posted February 26, 2004 Posted February 26, 2004 Egads my ears are still bleeding! I couldn't make it through the whole song! Quote
imode Posted February 26, 2004 Posted February 26, 2004 wow her japanese is really good! Something is wrong with you man. It sounded like a white person from Texas trying to sing in Japanese. ... "Y'all" ? Quote
Sumdumgai Posted February 26, 2004 Posted February 26, 2004 wow her japanese is really good! Something is wrong with you man. It sounded like a white person from Texas trying to sing in Japanese. ... "Y'all" ? Considering that ADV is stationed in Texas, you're not that far off... Quote
treatment Posted February 26, 2004 Author Posted February 26, 2004 Iirc, I think she's actually from the Carolinas, instead of ADV's Texas-hq. Quote
imode Posted February 26, 2004 Posted February 26, 2004 I actually have a nice rendition of ai, oboeteimasuka done by Shimokawa Mikuni (she did Saiyuuki ed and the HxH Greed Island songs). Got nowhere to host it though... Quote
Mechamaniac Posted February 26, 2004 Posted February 26, 2004 (edited) Would have been interesting if she had been singing it in english... I don't know, when I think about that, I think about that scene in the English dub of Mac Plus with Myung's friend... "My boyfriend is a pilot now....he's a pilot nooooooowwwww" Meh, keep the Japanese songs in Japanese. Edited February 26, 2004 by Mechamaniac Quote
Nightbat Posted February 26, 2004 Posted February 26, 2004 [frustration]Wow,.... that ....was interesting...[/frustration] Like with most covers: I prefer the original BTW - MechaManiac: love your Sig Quote
KingNor Posted February 26, 2004 Posted February 26, 2004 [frustration]Wow,.... that ....was interesting...[/frustration]Like with most covers: I prefer the original BTW - MechaManiac: love your Sig KoRn's cover of Metallicas "One" was pretty bad arse! Quote
the white drew carey Posted February 26, 2004 Posted February 26, 2004 I think this Goodnight girl would make a great 1st grade teacher, because she speaks like she's narrating a kid's book. But besides that, her speaking voice is everything I hate about dubs. Her singing voice isn't terrible, but I've heard better. Quote
Effect Posted February 27, 2004 Posted February 27, 2004 I've heard better but she wasn't bad at all. I liked it, though it would have been better if the words were in english. Quote
Nightbat Posted February 27, 2004 Posted February 27, 2004 KoRn's cover of Metallicas "One" was pretty bad arse! Korn? heh,... (not a fan) well so was Megadeth's cover of "Anarchy...." but I still prefer the original ...things are a lot simpler if you already have an example Quote
Hikuro Posted February 27, 2004 Posted February 27, 2004 yep yep, if it was in english it would of been interesting, mostly cause she was sounding like she was doing Jibberish at moments....anyone wanna hear me do Basara?! Quote

I agree not "Excelent".. but I think if she had been "better prepared", practiced the song a bit, had better background music.. it would of sounded better. I too got my hopes up, that it was going to be an "English" version. Quote
Damaramu Posted February 27, 2004 Posted February 27, 2004 Hmmm..... I do believe Lauren Goodnight shops at my store when she's in Houston. Quote
Abombz!! Posted February 27, 2004 Posted February 27, 2004 The song is only a turn on when Mari is singing it. Funny... I always found this song to be the most unberable of Minmays song..... every time I hear the Kyun-Kyun thing.... I fill like hurting/wrecking something. Quote

I hate that song. Her Japanese ain't bad as far as ADV seiyuu go. At least she tried..... Quote
Macross_Fanboy Posted February 27, 2004 Posted February 27, 2004 Maybe because you don't have boyfriend that's a pilot Abombz?? Just kidding, but I like that song, not the original from the TV series. I have two versions of it. Quite enjoyable. Quote

That song drives me nuts too..doesn't matter who sings it. Kyun Kyun Puke Puke... Actually most of Minmei's songs are brutal. Quote

Agent ONE Posted February 27, 2004 Posted February 27, 2004 L - O - V- E - Happy Minmay! Yeah well that was slightly lame, but the song kicks ass. Quote

Thou shalt not blaspheme against Lynn Minmay. Only Robotech fans hate Minmay. Be glad it was not "We Will Win" or "To Be In Love" you were listening to. Anyway, Ms. Goodnight's cover was OK. However, give me Mari Ijima any day. Quote

Macross_Fanboy Posted February 28, 2004 Posted February 28, 2004 Seriously! I hate Minmei's songs, they're so pointless, well, We Will Win was pretty good. Quote
bsu legato Posted February 28, 2004 Posted February 28, 2004 Actually most of Minmei's songs are brutal. Hey now. The music may be fairly trite, but at least Mari Ijima has a set of pipes that can sing. Unlike her Robotech counterpart, that is... Quote
Mechamaniac Posted February 28, 2004 Posted February 28, 2004 Yeah, Mari at least can sing. Ultimately, she was never able to escape the Minmay stereotype, and her career has been mediocre over all, but at least she has talent. Whoever told Reba West that she could sing was out of their freaking mind. All of the Reba West RT songs are like chewing broken glass. However, in comparison, Look Up (The Sky is Falling), Lonely Soldier Boy, and even We Will Win done by Lancer in New Gen are pretty damned good songs. Look Up is a perennial favorite of mine. So, not all of the RT tunes were bad, and at least they wrote a good opening theme, but I would rather eat my way out of a septic tank than listen to Reba West crowing out that crap she did. Quote
Max Jenius Posted February 28, 2004 Posted February 28, 2004 ugh... that was horrid. Like... not as bad as Reba... Her voice is ok, but just hearing her say the words made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Like HULK SMASH!!!! mode... Quote
