Duke Togo Posted February 23, 2004 Posted February 23, 2004 I don't know how many of you remember or have heard of the GoDaiKin and anime "GodMarz/GodMars". What I am trying to figure out is which name is right. The GoDaiKin box clearly gives him the name "GodMarz" in english, while the anime title translates from katakana (ゴットマーズ) into (I think) "Gotsudo Maasu". The english release of the anime calls it GodMars. Anyone know for sure? Quote
Apollo Leader Posted February 23, 2004 Posted February 23, 2004 Are you thinking of going back to the Godmars/marz name? Quote
Phyrox Posted February 23, 2004 Posted February 23, 2004 (edited) Well, the second katakana looks to be a small "tsu," which would indicate a stop/pause, not an actual "tsu" sound. The last katakana should probably be transliterated as "zu" rather than "su." So I would see the katakana translation as: Go-to Maazu (assuming there are no dots to make the third symbol a "do" rather than "to." with all the "o"s being pronounced like "oh" or course. I don't know if there any convention used in transliterating foreign words, but I believe I have seen s-endings done with both "su" and "zu." I'd go with God Mars Edited February 23, 2004 by Phyrox Quote
Duke Togo Posted February 23, 2004 Author Posted February 23, 2004 So, the toy name "GodMarz" is just one of those silly Japanese things, and it really should be "GodMars". Quote
Duke Togo Posted February 23, 2004 Author Posted February 23, 2004 Go-to Maazu (assuming there are no dots to make the third symbol a "do" rather than "to." ゴッドマーズ It is "do", that was my bad. Quote
Duke Togo Posted February 23, 2004 Author Posted February 23, 2004 From everything I've seen, only the GoDaiKin line used the name "God Marz". I am guessing "God Mars" is the correct name as well. Quote
F-ZeroOne Posted February 23, 2004 Posted February 23, 2004 There is a reasonable chance its both. Japanese sources can often conflict, even when dealing with the same character. Look at Zion/Jion/Gion/Zeon [1] from Gundam, just to use whats probably the most famous example... [1] Zeon is now the official version, but I'm pretty sure I've seen products since that was decided that are still different...! Quote
Duke Togo Posted February 23, 2004 Author Posted February 23, 2004 Well, all english sources have it as "GodMars". The ONLY place you'll ever see it as "GodMarz" is on the GoDaiKin boxes. I've seen pics of the instructions of the Bandai models, and they say GodMars" on them. Quote
