Druna Skass Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 Check this out, sort of makes me think of Midgar in FFVII. http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/engin...nteractive.html Quote
BFG-1 Gigan Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 Yeah but they can't build it due to Japan's lack of Bedrock... Quote
UN Spacy Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 It reminds me of the city in the sky that Gally dreamed of going to (from Battle Angel: Alita). Each sky city is supposed to be three times the size of the Eiffel Tower. Quote
BFG-1 Gigan Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 Nah that city was designed way differently, it was more of a dome than a tower... Quote
EXO Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 Man... that's awesome... They should call it "Babel". Quote
BFG-1 Gigan Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 Nah that's really more of a Negative name babel tower was actualy the origin of why there are so many languages... Quote
drifand Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 I recall a documentary about fighting high-rise fires and it featured a 3D mock-up of this project. The building is designed to allow wind to quickly ventilate any fire and reduce smoke inhalation casualties. The Tokyo fire dept was also featured with their helicopter mounted fire-fighting equipment... Quote
Oihan Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 I wonder how many more years till this is all possible...where we'll be seeing crap like that in the States. Quote
Phyrox Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 Nah that's really more of a Negative namebabel tower was actualy the origin of why there are so many languages... Wow, you're so smart! pats on head Quote
trueblueeyes Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 Nah that's really more of a Negative namebabel tower was actualy the origin of why there are so many languages... Wow, you're so smart! pats on head Come on, was that really necessary? Quote
Nightbat Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 I saw another show about a 1 km high building-project (or concept) it actually explained that indeed Japan's bedrock is very deep below the surface but if we're able to drill holes "x" meters deep this is just a temporary problem I don't know, maybe it's because i think Towering Inferno is a great movie but just because we can doesn't mean we should Quote
Anubis Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 What happens if someting blows up or damages one of the support struts for the core center or stadium? A novel idea, but what happens if you need to tear it down, or do heavy structural work on one of the lower blocks? Might as well go ahead and build space colonies IMO. I agree with Nightbat, just because we may be able build something that huge doesn't necessarily mean we should. Quote

Ah, but did it say anything about how such a building would be irresistable temptation for all manner of giant monsters and robots? Seriously, that thing is begging to be a Godzilla set. All in all, though... very cool indeed. Quote
bsu legato Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 Ah, but did it say anything about how such a building would be irresistable temptation for all manner of giant monsters and robots? Indeed. All that's missing is an architect bragging about how the tower is "unsinkable" and the recipe for disaster will be complete. Quote
Nightbat Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 Might as well go ahead and build space colonies IMO. Now there's a better idea if I'm gonna be put up with 100,000 other morons in a selfcontained arcology it might as well be in space got a problem with a part of the structure? simple, just nuke the site from or..... I mean evacuate and jettison the bastard into space (or the atmosphere) just like Lego easy to assemble and dissassemble Quote
Druna Skass Posted February 10, 2004 Author Posted February 10, 2004 What I'm wondering is, how earthquake proof will this thing be? Quote
Anubis Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 What I'm wondering is, how earthquake proof will this thing be? I would be worried, no mater how much they clamor it's indestrutible. If that building comes down, forget it. The suspended stadium and core center scream targets. Building Space colonies would probably be cheaper or comparable to that monstrosity. Technically feasible too eventually, there was a great site about UC Gundam type colonies I read a while back. Quote
Sumdumgai Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 (edited) Man... that's awesome... They should call it "Babel". We'd need a large force of robots to build this... how about labors! And of course we'd need a genius programmer to create a new operating system to boost efficiency... Why don't we call this new system- HOS! edit: spelling Edited February 10, 2004 by Sumdumgai Quote
Bloodcat Posted February 11, 2004 Posted February 11, 2004 Its like an Arcology. Kinda neat, but makes me glad I live in North America where we have plenty of land, and can at least attempt to afford our own homes. Or in my case help my dad continue to pay for his... Quote
Opus Posted February 11, 2004 Posted February 11, 2004 What I'm wondering is, how earthquake proof will this thing be? If I were going to live there I'd be more concerned about how North Korean balistic missile proof it is. Those nuts are always tauting Japan with those things. Quote
Southcross Posted February 11, 2004 Posted February 11, 2004 Midgar... maybe... Also kind of reminds me of the "lost" Proculture city from DYRL, though its been a while sinse I have seen the movie. Quote
