Saruta2 Posted September 24 Posted September 24 So there's that Zentraedi one-episode opponent guy in Frontier whose name is Temjin and everyone notes he looks like Kamjin so maybe a clone... But someone on FB a couple of days ago proposed he might be the som of Kamjin and Lap Lamiz. And then I realized - Kamjin and Lap Lamiz naming their son Temujin makes SO. MUCH. SENSE. They got into Earth war culture, and while we don't know much detail from the anime, one thing we do know is they liked the idea of riding. What if it wasn't just cowboys they noticed? Temujin is the birth name of Genghis Khan. Wouldn't the origin of the Mongol Empire be an exceedingly interesting subject for a Zentraedi looking into Earth history? And certainly they'd see him as the guy to emulate? A perfect name for their son. it does mean they'd have to leave him somewhere before "going out in glory", as they would see their attack. I wonder if this was the intended meaning all along? Quote

But someone on FB a couple of days ago proposed he might be the som of Kamjin and Lap Lamiz. It's pretty clear that's not the case if you think about it. After all, Quamzin and Laplamiz didn't have any relationship other than a professional one until very near the end of the original series. They had their first kiss in episode 32, which is set in November 2011. That's barely a month before they both died in episode 36, which is set at the very end of 2011. There's not enough time for the two of them to have had a child together before they both died. (Temjin's expanded backstory in the novelization of Macross Frontier describes him as being a natural born Zentradi whose parents had been among the Zentradi who defected to the UN Forces during the First Space War and continued to serve in Earth's defense forces after the war. That rules out Quamzin and Laplamiz being his parents.) 35 minutes ago, Saruta2 said: I wonder if this was the intended meaning all along? We can be pretty sure that it was not... both for the reasons stated above, and because we know the character was not originally named Temjin during development. There is one part of your hypothesis that does actually work though. There are several other Zentradi characters who are noted to have taken Human names, sometimes with historical significance, because they are essentially Earth culture otaku. Macross R's villain Naresuan is one such example... He was a defector who took the name of a king from the history of Thailand for some reason. Quote

In the TV series he was just yet another Zentradi in the group that rejected Earth's culture who surrendered after the war as opposed to defecting to Earth like with Britai's group. But in the TV novelization, his rebellion came from being angry with human discrimination against Zentradi despite how much they contributed to humanity's growth, and even joined the Macross Quarter as an ally for the finale. For my ten cents, his more anti-hero character sounded like a more interesting character than what we got animation wise, bonus points that he piloted the Neo Glaug too! The final bit made me consider that in the show proper he got defeated by Alto, but wasn't framed as if he was completely gone like he was going to pop up again. Quote
Saruta2 Posted September 24 Author Posted September 24 Thanks! I didn't know about the novelization story so that's new to me. As he's natural born of parents familiar with Earth culture, strictly speaking the idea of him being named for Genghis Khan probably can't be eliminated? Just that it wasn't by Kamjin. Quote

Especially if his family were Earth culture otaku like Naresuan. Quote
