Yeah, that's not how things work. You're actually borking your colors by letting Roku display everything in Dolby Vision mode. Dolby Vision should only be used if the content you're watching is encoded with it. You can't force/convert it. It'll only screw up your colors.

Yup, until I turned this off (granted it was only about 20 minutes) everything looked too dark and vivid. It worked fine for native 4K programming but not HD.  Needs to be disabled immediately b

I'm actually ok with fixing animation/coloring errors. I'm also ok with cleaning up FX shots in live-action films. But I'm not ok with removing natural film grain inherent to the negative, and I generally have issues with entirely new color gradings, especially if they dramatically alter the look of the film.

LOL See, now there needs to be Ultra-Hard Core UHD Release #2 with Heat Shield color correction and grain. Even just a flat 5k scan isn't generic enough  :)

I decided to fully watch the UHD-rip I made with the muted colors of the Roku player doing Dolby Vision auto-conversion on my LG-C2...

and it actually ain't that bad, surprisingly!  It's just not as saturated as the native HDR.

At least,  to my eyes and stuff. It's fine. I'm not missing the color saturation of the native HDR.

I still like the native HDR setting as well, but enjoying watching this rip in multiple ways is a great plus.

I do think I now prefer the muted colors just coz it doesn't stress my eyes as much,

This release just keeps on giving!   :bump:

I can't tell, but does this come with a poster?

I haven't dealt with physical media in a while. Is this 4k release region free or do I need to buy a multi-region UHD player?

I didn't notice any region-lettering on my Japan-disc, so maybe the usual region-free UHD/BD from Japan.

Not sure if the one being offered in Amazon-US is directly the same as the japanese-version, but fwiw, US and Japan do share the same BD-region for playback.

Also, I think poster-offers were japanese-market exclusives.  Just either have to wait or ask them directly for further details about it.

Can't take credit for its production, but here are 17 screenshots comparing the 2007 DVD, 2012 BD, 2016 BD, and the new 4K.

I already posted these way and the beginning of the thread when the 4k was annouced, these are not from the 4k film but from publicity pictures.  quote from owner:

I've no idea why people are sharing the old comparison I did with publicity screenshots. I've set the comparison to automatically delete itself after the 30th.

The overly processed video of the UHD is bad, but I do think it's less bad than the 2012 and 2016 Blu-rays which have a lot of noise caused by color/contrast boosting (not to be confused with grain). Attempts to erase the noise caused problems like frozen grain textures and grain/noise that is only contained within certain areas of a frame. The 2016 Blu-ray exacerbates the problems with additional sharpening and noise reduction. The UHD is at least more consistent in its presentation.

It's a shame that the 4K remaster turned out this way. There are benefits to the new scan and color grade, but all the processing causes unnecessary damage to the picture. There's even a clean up error that only appears on the 4K remaster (I checked against the 2016/2012 BDs, 2007 DVD and 1984/1992/1993 LDs!)

The 2007 DVD is still the best in my opinion. It's far from perfect, but the people who worked on the 2007 remaster didn't go out of their way to offend me.

One more thing: the UHD 2.0 Dolby Surround track is based on the 2007 DVD, which is a tweak of Bandai's compressed mastering from the 1992 Perfect Edition LaserDisc. I noticed distortions during 0-G Love on the Bandai masterings. The only mastering without this problem is from Shogakukan Video's 1993 Perfect Edition LaserDisc. The English and Japanese subtitles are timed to the Dolby Surround track and Mono; this causes problems with the 5.1 track due to missing lines and timing changes (e.g. When Britai says "This song, it feels peculiar...").

I think they should've gotten the team that worked on the 4K version of Transformers The Movie.  I have that 4K disc and in my opinion, they did a really good job.

I didn't realized it does that since I always have Dolby Vision On for Amzn-Prime content.

I thought Prime only did HDR10+ and not Dolby Vision? I'd have to look into that.

DV used to be free for Prime-members.

They've since put it in their ad-free tier for an additional $2.99/mo fee or something.

I didn't upgrade to that tier and just forgot to reset my Roku setting for it.

My first release limited edition from yokakunow just arrived. No poster. It does come with the A4 size acrylic board with Mikimoto's illustration on it, the '84 summer badge, and the "signed" screenplay.

I recently purchased the 4K Blu Ray of the 1984 Transformers movie.  It is very good for people that want to preserve the original film.  It is very intensely grainy in some scenes where the film has clearly degraded over the past decades.

However, I will say that this 4K DYRL is not botched like, say, the Akira 4K release, which was scrubbed too aggressively.  This DYRL still has visible grain.  It has been lightly scrubbed, but not entirely removed.

I totally agree with you about the 4K version of Akira.  They went way overboard with the DNR.  I'm not sure if they used AI, but maybe they did.  They even removed the incredible 24bit/192khz Japanese Dolby audio track.  I'm glad I kept my Akira blu-ray.

My copy of DYRL 4K has arrived. I only ordered the regular edition, so no poster for me. Still, a very nice presentation. I second a request made previously: if someone can translate the booklet, it would be greatly appreciated.

if it hit's 7700yen on amazon again for the regular deluxe this week, i might bite since the yen to usd is very favorable.

that's a nice poster

Its metallic(reflective?) on the upper sdf-1 body, arms/cannons, and the SDF-1 does pop/highlight somewhat from the rest of the background.

Cant really judge the quality/effectiveness of that metallic sheen until and furthermore in a frame.

frontposter.jpeg.7326ec5bf58fd2bda4d443f3ded40452.jpeg

From the back of the poster it certainly looks chrome-y.

backposter.jpeg.3415f4b28d63e4c1c95eab7e03a400ea.jpeg

This rakuten exclusive costs 9900 yen though, higher than the other releases..

So is that pretty rigid like cardstock paper or is more like one of those thin metal posters? I really wanted one of those posters.

It’s not rigid, feels soft so definitely not cardstock  and not even like any thin metal posters.

Thin chrome paper, if that makes any sense?🤣

not sure if forum will auto-resize or auto-lower the quality, but here are a couple of initial 4k-native png-screenshots:

Thought the original 4k-native snapshots filesizes were  just a bit too big and possibly causes slowdown or something, so I downscaled them to 50%...

more playback option for your ripped DYRL-4k...

As most of you know already, MS had unfortunately and deliberately hobbled the native Win10/Win11-WMP to not be able to play any disc-media anymore (cd/dvd/bd/UHD).

However, assuming your system is HDR-compliant, you can still use WMP to play ripped files. Provided you have the necessary codecs, at least.

So I tried Win11's native WMP with the HEVC codec, and it seem to be quite a nicely bit brighter output. I mean, Win11 itself is quite natively HDR-aggressive, I think.

However, it's a bit awkward pain in the ass to do a clean screenshot without all the controls getting included. Not even sure if it's possible to do a clean snapshot.

Also, it seems to even use my monitor's native 1440-seting instead of the 4k-setting from the video-source:

Is it me or are more stars visible in the backgrounds of the 4K release?  How is that possible?  Did the original film have that many stars?  Often in the 4K version the stars are multiple colors, not just white.

Looking at the screen capture above, I just now noticed after all these years that Hikaru's left booster rocket is the wrong color (white) when he unloads his payload.  LoL
