The DYRL-UHD's colors comes a little flat on my old rinkydink cheapo TCL 55S425 VA-panel, which is known to have only basic HDR reproduction. (I bought it exclusively for PS/4 gaming back in the day). In contrast, the DYRL-UHD was very spectacular on my now-3yo LG C2 OLED. Macross stuff can get really expensive really quickly, and not just with the toys... I'm playing it on PS5 with LG C2 48" OLED seems to look pretty good. Yeah I collect the toys but most of them I bought when they were released so saved a little money that way. I'm still missing a few but I'll acquire them in time. I will probably need to spend about a grand or so if I want to get everything I'm missing from my sets since the 2000 reissues. I also would like to get a 1/55 Elintseeker one day or hopefully they will make a 1/48th Chogokin. Quote
kajnrig Posted February 18 Posted February 18 All previous translations (and even just listening to it) of the Max/Milia "Utsukushii" exchange have been Quote Max: Beautiful... (ie You're beautiful.) Milia: Beautiful... (ie You're (also) beautiful.) The official subs instead choose to write those lines out as Quote Max: Beautiful... (ie You're beautiful.) Milia: "Beautiful"...? (ie I'm beautiful? OR What is this word, 'beautiful'?) Does anyone know if the official subs are reflective of what was actually intended with that scene? Because I do have to say, I prefer the first way more, where they're both struck by each other's beauty. Quote
jenius Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Makes more sense if she's asking what beauty is though. Quote

Right, I think the latter is more appropriate as well, but I like the idea of Minmay's song "unlocking" the ability to put word to concept, and Milia calling Max beautiful is an instinctive act. wm cheng Posted February 18 Posted February 18 (edited) Damn it! Won't ship to Canada. So is this 4K transfer worth it? I have the previous release and it wasn't too sharp and I've noticed a lot of 4K transfers lately aren't very sharp and not a noticeable improvement over the 2K blu-rays (ie; Oblivion). Is it actually sharper or higher resolution and a noticeable improvement over the previous blu-ray release? I saw a Japanese review on Amazon.jp that said it was blurrier/softer than the 2K release - is that true? Edited February 18 by wm cheng Quote

You can check NLScavenger's opinion on the transfer and stuff: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php?p=22846018&postcount=1588 You can also check the various snapshots I posted in this thread. As such, you will need some of these to appreciate the DYRL-UHD version: a 4k/UHD-capable player or drive (PS/5, Sony X700, Panasonic UBxxx, LG UBK80/UBK90, ASUS, etc) an actually good HDR-compliant TV, preferrably OLED-class. (note some basic and rather cheap VA-panel/class HDR-capable TVs only produces very low-quality output. Check www.rtings.com for excellent TV-reviews). if you're able to rip it, then a software-player that is HEVC-codec capable (mpv, smplayer, new win11 wmp). do not use vlc or the old wmp (12 and below) as they are incapable of proper HDR processing. As a Zentran, those weren't words they would know, and even if she was able to learn human language of Japanese, I don't think her extremely limited knowledge of culture would have her respond like that. I think she was either just repeating it because she didn't know what that was, or was repeating it more inquisitively. Quote

I saw a Japanese review on Amazon.jp that said it was blurrier/softer than the 2K release - is that true? I bought mine from CDJapan. It's 9000 yen, which is about $84 CAD. On top of that I had to pay for shipping, and then the 2 part Canadian Customs fee (tax + "handling fee"). Pricey....but so worth it in my opinion. It's not perfect as there are still some things in some scenes which seem out of focus. But it is the best DYRL has ever looked overall. And finally, official decent english subtitles which are much better than the the original HK/Chinese bootleg DVD from the early 2000's. Quote
guyxxed Posted February 19 Posted February 19 Dumb question, but does the regular blu-ray that comes with the set not have the English subtitles on it? I've tried all of the menu options I can find, but none of them seem to put English on the screen. Happy with it either way, and the picture looks goregous to me, but just wondering if it's only on the 4k or if I'm just having a stupid attack and can't find the option on the regular blu-ray. Quote

guyxxed Posted February 19 Posted February 19 Yup, that was exactly what I zeroed in on, but nothing came up on screen during playback. I've probably got a setting messed up somewhere on the player itself. Thanks for the confirmation, I'll keep fiddling. Quote

NLScavenger's review is the most critical of all reviews and he is still implying it is the best release yet. I personally have compared it to the 2016 1080p Bluray and my own custom AI upscale of that Bluray to 4K. This official 2025 4K release is better than both. It isn’t perfect, but it can’t be perfect due to the analog nature of film recording of hand drawn cel animation… where the original film recording had focus issues. Quote

wm cheng Posted February 20 Posted February 20 Thanks so much, you guys are bad for my wallet, looks like I need this release. I just got burned with Oblivion 4K which is worse than the 1080p Blu-Ray @treatment I just got a brand new JVC DLA-NZ500 laser 4K projector with 100" screen, a new Denon AVR-X-4800H receiver and Panasonic DP-UB820 4K Player and my old 7.2 Paradigm Studio SEs. Powered Convoy Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Watching the hybrid version on Disney+ I noticed an error on Misa's rank designation when she chews out Hikaru in his quarters. I was surprised to see they didn't try to correct this in the 4K, considering some of the other corrections. Guess it's not super noticable. Quote

Boobytrap Posted February 25 Posted February 25 Watched the movie on my 126" projection screen this past weekend. It was awesome seeing it as more of a movie rather than reduced on a computer screen. The animation moved very smoothly and I really liked how the colors popped. Sound was terrific as well. My only real issue were the parts that were blurry. It can be really hard on the eyes when they are trying to adjust for part of the screen being crisp and sharp and part seeming out of focus. More so when magnified on a giant screen. It doesn't help that the blurry portion will change positions depending on the camera angle in the scene. I'm still over the moon to have this in my collection with English subs. Quote

onnasake Posted February 26 Posted February 26 Am I alone in really disliking the cover art? All of their faces look off to me. It's too 2010s anime, not 1980s anime. I really liked that big can badge that says "84 Summer." Hits you with instant nostalgia, imagining Japanese nerds lining up to see this in a theater in Shinjuku. I have the 45 of the theme song and that logo is on the cover...it's small, but it's there! Quote

On the bootleg dvd that I had Max basically says she’s beautiful, but her response more like Beutiful? As though she didn’t understand and it sort of sounds like she could be questioning it as a new term or that she could be questioning finding him beautiful. It does seem like there is some kind of confusion to her. gotta add another edit since I kinda just thought about it that Miria might not speak any of our languages. She may have just been repeating what Max said out of confusion and maybe kinda getting the hint. She’s Meltran and I don’t think they took the time to try and understand any earth languages the way the Zentran had. The Meltran showed up later, but were never really shown to have tried to investigate things, just kinda went on the attack with a completely different objective Edited February 27 by Big s After a quick rewatch of the scene without subtitles, she repeats his exact words. I don’t know Japanese, so maybe someone that does would know better as to what they’re saying and how it should be taken. They both sound to have surprised confusion though Quote

They just kinda did hand signals. maybe that’s why their relationship worked out in the movie version and fell apart for a while in the tv universe. Max just did odd hand signals, then he showed her the classic then they……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. and that’s how they repopulated the earth for Macross 2 Quote
judgedoug Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Finally got a chance to watch the 4k bluray. The last time I saw DYRL was on a VHS, fansubbed (that I got from someone on usenet in the mid 90's, still have it in a storage bin in my attic), so I was expecting an improvement. Oh my goodness, it did not disappoint. That was beautiful. Stunning. Gorgeous. It felt like I was looking at the original cels. I had a screening party with some friends, one who loves Robotech and one who has had no exposure to anything Macross other than seeing my toys in the display case when he comes over to play miniatures games. They both loved it and we spent a solid hour or more talking about various aspects of it. And boy do I miss high quality hand drawn animation in general. It really made me want to seek out other remasters of anime from the 80's and 90's. I am very, very happy that I preordered this from cdjapan and I am very, very happy to finally have high quality subtitled physical media of this excellent film. Quote
PC Valkyrie Posted March 4 Posted March 4 It's safe to say that my love for Macross has been re-invigorated recently, mainly because of this 4K blu ray release of DYRL. The more recent ThreeZero Robotech toys and the Bandai DX Chogokin YF-19 and YF-21 toys also contributed towards pulling me back in after so many years. So much so that I've logged back into these forums after many many years away...... Anyways, I think the 4K blu ray is the best DYRL has ever looked. There is still some grain that is noticeable when viewing the film in a dark room, especially in the darker scenes (like when Hikaru and Minmay are stranded in the sealed off section of the SDF-1). Like many have said earlier, the colours are very vibrant, especially when viewed on a HDR capable TV. On the 2016 version, Kawamori decided to remove the wonderful background music in the scene just before Minmay agrees to take the lyrics from Hikaru to sing the final song. This is the only thing I don't like about the 2016 version. Therefore, the only way I get to listen to the original background music during this scene is with the 1984 version (which doesn't have the Angel's Paints concert footage from Flashback 2012 at the of the film, which I also adore). Furthermore, the 1984 version of the film on this latest 4K blu ray set only has a Linear PCM mono track with some distortion at times. Seems like the only way I can enjoy a stereo version of the "Perfect Edition" version of the film which still has that background music during that Minmay/Hikaru scene is on the bootleg HK DVD which I have, which I believe was ripped from the Perfect Edition Laser Disc from 1992. When I listen to my bootleg DVD with headphones, I can confirm that it is at least in stereo (Dollby Digital 2.0, according to my disc player), which sounds much better than the Linear PCM mono track on the 1984 version of the film on the latest 4K Blu Ray set. This is the bootleg DVD with english subtitles from many years ago which served as my reference way to watch DYRL for many many years: Quote
Steady Posted March 4 Posted March 4 I love it when its obviously a bootleg and they still put the copyright warning on the back. 🤣 Quote
