The video-quality will depend on your 4K-TV's HDR-qualities.

The DYRL-UHD's colors comes a little flat on my old rinkydink cheapo TCL 55S425 VA-panel, which is known to have only basic HDR reproduction. (I bought it exclusively for PS/4 gaming back in the day).

In contrast, the DYRL-UHD was very spectacular on my now-3yo LG C2 OLED.

Macross stuff can get really expensive really quickly, and not just with the toys...

I'm playing it on PS5 with LG C2 48" OLED seems to look pretty good.  Yeah I collect the toys but most of them I bought when they were released so saved a little money that way.  I'm still missing a few but I'll acquire them in time.  I will probably need to spend about a grand or so if I want to get everything I'm missing from my sets since the 2000 reissues.  I also would like to get a 1/55 Elintseeker one day or hopefully they will make a 1/48th Chogokin.

All previous translations (and even just listening to it) of the Max/Milia "Utsukushii" exchange have been

Quote

Max: Beautiful... (ie You're beautiful.)

Milia: Beautiful... (ie You're (also) beautiful.)

The official subs instead choose to write those lines out as

Quote

Max: Beautiful... (ie You're beautiful.)

Milia: "Beautiful"...? (ie I'm beautiful? OR What is this word, 'beautiful'?)

Does anyone know if the official subs are reflective of what was actually intended with that scene? Because I do have to say, I prefer the first way more, where they're both struck by each other's beauty.

Makes more sense if she's asking what beauty is though.

Right, I think the latter is more appropriate as well, but I like the idea of Minmay's song "unlocking" the ability to put word to concept, and Milia calling Max beautiful is an instinctive act.

Damn it!  Won't ship to Canada.

So is this 4K transfer worth it?  I have the previous release and it wasn't too sharp and I've noticed a lot of 4K transfers lately aren't very sharp and not a noticeable improvement over the 2K blu-rays (ie; Oblivion).  Is it actually sharper or higher resolution and a noticeable improvement over the previous blu-ray release?  I saw a Japanese review on Amazon.jp that said it was blurrier/softer than the 2K release - is that true?

You can check NLScavenger's opinion on the transfer and stuff:  https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php?p=22846018&postcount=1588

You can also check the various snapshots I posted in this thread.

As such, you will need some of these to appreciate the DYRL-UHD version:

  • a 4k/UHD-capable player or drive (PS/5, Sony X700, Panasonic UBxxx, LG UBK80/UBK90, ASUS, etc)
  • an actually good HDR-compliant TV, preferrably OLED-class. (note some basic and rather cheap VA-panel/class HDR-capable TVs only produces very low-quality output. Check www.rtings.com for excellent TV-reviews).
  • if you're able to rip it, then a software-player that is HEVC-codec capable (mpv, smplayer, new win11 wmp).  do not use vlc or the old wmp (12 and below) as they are incapable of proper HDR processing.

I never got that Milia was saying that Max was beautiful. As a Zentran, those weren't words they would know, and even if she was able to learn human language of Japanese, I don't think her extremely limited knowledge of culture would have her respond like that. I think she was either just repeating it because she didn't know what that was, or was repeating it more inquisitively.

I bought mine from CDJapan.  It's 9000 yen, which is about $84 CAD.  On top of that I had to pay for shipping, and then the 2 part Canadian Customs fee (tax + "handling fee").   Pricey....but so worth it in my opinion.  It's not perfect as there are still some things in some scenes which seem out of focus. But it is the best DYRL has ever looked overall.  And finally, official decent english subtitles which are much better than the the original HK/Chinese bootleg DVD from the early 2000's.

Dumb question, but does the regular blu-ray that comes with the set not have the English subtitles on it?  I've tried all of the menu options I can find, but none of them seem to put English on the screen.  Happy with it either way, and the picture looks goregous to me, but just wondering if it's only on the 4k or if I'm just having a stupid attack and can't find the option on the regular blu-ray.

Yup, that was exactly what I zeroed in on, but nothing came up on screen during playback.  I've probably got a setting messed up somewhere on the player itself.  Thanks for the confirmation, I'll keep fiddling.

NLScavenger's review is the most critical of all reviews and he is still implying it is the best release yet.  I personally have compared it to the 2016 1080p Bluray and my own custom AI upscale of that Bluray to 4K.  This official 2025 4K release is better than both.  It isn’t perfect, but it can’t be perfect due to the analog nature of film recording of hand drawn cel animation… where the original film recording had focus issues.

Actually, he says the 2007 DVD is the best release. Which has me wanting to check it out.

Thanks so much, you guys are bad for my wallet, looks like I need this release.  I just got burned with Oblivion 4K which is worse than the 1080p Blu-Ray

@treatment I just got a brand new JVC DLA-NZ500 laser 4K projector with 100" screen, a new Denon AVR-X-4800H receiver and Panasonic DP-UB820 4K Player and my old 7.2 Paradigm Studio SEs.

Neat!

Never into projectors, but you can tell us all about how DYRL-UHD is on your 4k-projector.

HeppokoSamurai watched it using a 4k-projector and a ps/5, and he seems was very impressed with it:
