Looking at the screen capture above, I just now noticed after all these years that Hikaru's left booster rocket is the wrong color (white) when he unloads his payload.  LoL

I noticed that one from a screenshot a long while back, but the rocket pods on some of the Nousjadeul Ger is something I just found out about a couple days ago. I do think there’s gonna be more little things left to be discovered though

i know most of us got the deluxe with posters. I want a poster too but will sacrifice it for the other goodies.

ah, nice! i'm guessing there's about 4 or 5 on here so far that ordered the limited A-store special.

  • Powered Convoy
  • locidm
  • Shawn
  • myself

that seems like a decent number grabbed the special.

Just wanna say that I really love this 4k/UHD release. Totally worth it even without the posters and stuff.

Here's to hoping BW and BV made more than enough profits on this gorgeous DYRL-4k/UHD so they can immediately soon do and release the titles below within a year or so in 4K/UHD format:

  • 4k/UHD Macross Plus OVA and Movie (with proper english-subs and the proper original ep4 dub as default)
  • 4k/UHD Macross Zero with the current english-subs of the bd-remaster
  • 4k/UHD SDF-TV with the Animeigo subs and the Animeigo cards.

It'll be just so frickin' awesome!

Ooof, no. This thing was finished in SD. The HD upscale is not great; I can't imagine how bad a 4K upscale would look.

Do you have or did you get to watch the recent 2024 BD-Remaster of Zero done with the same FORS-AI tech as this DYRL-UHD?

I can imagine the BD-2024 remaster being even better in 4K remastering since it's already very nice and crispy.

Much much better than the very soft 2008-BD original.

Maybe this has already been answered, but for those of us lacking language skills, which disc has what, and what differences are there between the 1984 and 2016 versions?

From context clues I'm guessing red disc is UHD, yellow is HD... Do both have multiple versions of the movie?

Posted

Multiple versions? There's only one cut I am aware of, unless you mean one without the Angel's Paints coda and one with.

Posted (edited)

Sorry, I guess I just don't know exactly what's what. Set comes with two discs, UHD with red trim, HD with yellow trim. UHD disc presents you right away with options for

  • Linear PCM 1984,
  • Linear PCM 2016,
  • DTS 5.1 2016.

I was confused and assumed they had packed two different versions - the 1984 being the new 4k one (with the one audio track), the 2016 ones being the 2016 master, maybe with a basic 1080p-to-4k integer upscale applied (with two audio tracks). Since I didn't have the discs on hand, I didn't pay too close attention to the discussion up through now about its contents. Teaches me.

EDIT:

The Zentraredi troops quaking in fear at the Minmay doll. I'd forgotten such silly moments.

So from what I've been told, both versions of the movie on the disc are upscaled and enhanced, the difference is the content, the 1984 doesn't have the Angel Paints concert outro, which is like 2 minutes worth of visuals at best, and the 2016 does. The 2016 cut also has the DTS audio option of course which if you have the right audio set up will be ideal. Most people's average TV set up likely won't notice a big difference either way I think.

And just so it's fully out there, the options are the same on each disc, with the UHD disc having everything in the full 4K whereas the Blu-ray disc is just HD.

Yeah, so audiophiles will like the Linear PCM option overall, but if you have an actual 5.1 surround system set up, the DTS will be more immersive despite the compression used.

I have a 4K TV with a soundbar. It's moot so I used PCM.

I've got a home theater system, and while all of them sound fine, I prefer the 1984 audio track.   To my ears, it seems like they added a lot of bass to the DTS track.

My set with Hikaru and Minmei poster from Amazon JP arrived.

I haven't shipped out my First Press Limited Edition set with script, badge, and Mikimoto acrylic board from Yoyakunow yet.  I think I'll wait and ship it together with my 2 orders of the Mikimoto Macross Art Collection book.

My 4K player displays the DTS stream as being HD-MA, which means it's lossless. No compression.

Couldn't tell ya anything. I'm just reporting what I've looked up and others say about that. I'm not an audio expert.

And it says it right on the packaging, which I totally missed. Silly me.

Does the 2016 version have the head squishies?

In case it's unclear, that stuff bring cut on the one release was only done because it was packaged with a video game and by Japanese law it had to match the game rating.

There was never a reason beyond that for DYRL to be censored for any content beyond that the game was marketed for a younger age group. By this logic all releases with just the movie are basically always going to have everything.

Been a loooong time since I logged back in here (holy crap it’s been exactly THREE years…I kid you not).

My copy arrived from Amazon Japan but now I’ll need a B3 frame which I’m not paying Amazon $40 to ship here.

Watched the 4k today on my older LG OLED, UHD Player, and a new(to me, i.e. used) 5.1 system, and it was fantastic.

This is the first time I've watched the movie in in a non stereo tv/mono mix, and it was pretty wild. All the lasers and explosions finally hit my ears in a way they were meant to, not coming out of some small tv speakers.
Its a great mix and holds its own, but there were some weird echo type things, like the crowd in the first concert. Something seemed out of phase for a few times. I'll need to recheck my wiring. I then played the mono mix and that weird crowd echo was gone, and strange enough, the sound was beefier-more 'solid' with more presence than the 5.1. I guess all the bass moved into the LR speakers.
I actually like them both, each one its own way. They did a great job on the audio. At the very end when I got the 1 & 2, the pause, and then the Angel Paints beat hit I got a chill.  GET YOURSELVES A NICE SOUND SYSTEM to watch this movie, you won't regret it. I certainly have.

The video took some getting used to. With the restoration they did, it sometimes seems like there are different layers on the screen at the same time. Can't really explain but the old bluray had a flatter picture, where this one seemed like there were different elements involved. It was a bit unnerving at first, but my eyes got used to it and I eventually just forgot about it all and enjoyed it. Everything does 'pop' now-it is vibrant in a way I've never seen before.

Having the subtitles was fantastic on the TV-its like seeing this for the first time again, where I was not having to remember all the dialogue from past subtitled viewings from a computer screen.

I know we could run laps around picture restoration preferences, but once I got to the Hikaru/Minmei in the city scene I just accepted the picture in and stopped judgement.
It was a great 1.5 hours this afternoon. And again-I cannot recommend this enough-get a sound system, it makes ALL the difference. I am happily retiring my soundbar.

For the next Con we really need to consider renting out a theater and having a private viewing.

I think the Rakuten one is the hard one to find right now. I saw the poster for sale for $50 and it sold by itself recently.
I don't think many people are letting that one go yet.

wow, $50 is up there.

@seti88 seems like you're the only one with the Rakuten poster. if you ever frame it, post some pics. I'm still waiting for CDjapan proxy to ship my copy. (i ordered late though so i expect perhaps sometime this or next week) been looking on Mercari  prices are slowly creeping up on the first press limited. i see the summer 84 badge going for 46-50 by itself.

I just bought this and I hope the quality is good.  I have a 4k bluray player (ps5) and regular bluray player (Ps3, ps4) so I'm set for players and yeah I know a playstation isn't the top notch best player but it's all I'm going to use.  The film itself cost me $70 shipped from amazon US site.  Most expensive movie I have ever purchased.

Right now I'm watching Genesis Climber Mospeada until I get this new movie in the mail 😛

The video-quality will depend on your 4K-TV's HDR-qualities.

The DYRL-UHD's colors comes a little flat on my old rinkydink cheapo TCL 55S425 VA-panel, which is known to have only basic HDR reproduction. (I bought it exclusively for PS/4 gaming back in the day).

In contrast, the DYRL-UHD was very spectacular on my now-3yo LG C2 OLED.

Macross stuff can get really expensive really quickly, and not just with the toys...

Has anyone ever validated that the Flash Back 2012 Angel Paints segment actually played in theaters for DYRL's first release?
I never believed it.
Just seems like a jump in animation quality and style.

Also, If I paid for the VHS or Laserdisc on release day I would be livid if that wasn't actually included.

Just some weird fan rumor?
