I'm personally excited to get this.

I already know it's going to have a lot of pop with HDR and with the AI coloring enhancements. I already resigned myself to a picture with no grain and loss of detail due to the directors preference of the amount of DNR.

definitely going to be exciting for the first few months as the Stars Wars had when they first came out in HD.

This is an amazing piece of Macross trivia-apparently there was a July 1st screening for the movie, BUT it wasn't done yet, so they showed what they had completed at the time (partial) then threw in some Macross TV episodes, all to make it 90m total

You then got some tickets for the later finished release.

That is wild!

I pre-ordered two copies, one from Amazon (with the poster) with the other from A-on through CDJapan. I just received an email from DHL that the Amazon order shipped; expected to be here by end of day on Monday 2/3! Still waiting on an email for the A-on order. From everything I've read and seen so far, I can't wait!!! Deculture!

Just got mine in the mail today! Yay!

I'm surprised that mine came with the Poster as well, even though I supposedly ordered the regular version. Thank you CD Japan!

Going to watch this weekend and give my feedback on the quality of the re-master. 😁

These are the 3 unique B3 sized posters right? (not my pic)

Which one is from which store? There was Rakuten, Amazon, and the special edition fan club one right?
No I think the fan club one is the acrylic board.

I think the Rakuten one is the sdf-1.
Who is the 3rd source?

ok so this is it, I think.

Just got notification of an extra 4600 yen needed for shipping from CD-Japan( I ordered 2x), so at least my order is closer to being shipped.

I got a similar notification/invoice yesterday for the A-on order through CDJapan...an additional 4132 yen to cover the volume weight.

Side note, got my order from Amazon. Looking forward to watching it!!!

Edit: I haven't seen any other shipping notifications, regarding the CDJapan order, since having paid the invoice.

Ok. Received mine today.

First impressions of scenes up to the classic Hikaru-1A fanservice shot:

  • some parts of the scenes are blurry and fuzzy. some are excessive and some are just minor.
  • the colors do pop.
  • I'm not missing the film-grain, yet.
  • The english-subs are good and grammatically correct so far!

Cannot rip the UHD, yet, for proper png-snapshots, but I did do some jpg-snapshots captures with the following devices:

  • LG 65C2
  • Sony UBP-X700
  • Nikon D750
  • Nikkor 35mm
  • Entangle, Darktable, Gimp

I've resized it to 30% to hopefully not violate forum-constraints.

Since these are jpgs instead of pngs, the colors are a bit inferior and not as vivid as the one you actually get presented with when you watch the UHD with your UHD-capable TV and Player.

However, you'll still see the blurry and fuzzy parts of the scenes.

That said, here you go!

edit: guess the forum doesn't do thumbnails-views?  oh, well. enjoy, nevertheless!

Looks beautiful. I'm waiting for my Evangelion McDonald's set to arrive before I ship mine.

My copy arrived today.  I watched it and compared it to the 2016 1080p release, as well as compared it to my own custom AI upscale of that 1080p release.  My AI upscale is also 4K.

This official 2025 4K release is superior to both.  After turning off my Blu Ray player’s denoising setting and similarly for my TV, the film grain is visible!  This release is clearly not just some AI upscale.  It is a real 4K transfer.  Technically it was a 5K transfer that was downscaled to 4K.

The 100% hand drawn cel animation on film look is fully intact.  This is the definitive release of DYRL… until they put the 5K transfer on an 8K Blu Ray.

Hey there! Total newbie on here!

Just got the Amazon copy and quite impressed -never owned a copy, and since memory lane reminded me of this movie only had what's floating around on YouTube or WebArchive to watch -hence no control over colour or translation authenticity. BTW, record time shipping; Wed to my door Friday -2 Days!

the booklet that comes with, does anyone know if a translation has been made? this link (https://natalie.mu/eiga/pp/macross_aiobo_uhdbd/page/1) was shared earlier in this tread, but is that it? it doesn't seem like it...

Yeah, I don’t have a physical UHD Blu-ray player either but I ended up getting DYRL anyways. I’m trying to decide whether to buy a dedicated UHD player with Dolby Vision/HDR10 or a UHD PC drive to rip the disc into a digital file.

I did both.  The PS5 supports UHD and HDR.  It is convenient as a set top box for a big 4K OLED TV and slouching on a couch viewing.

For a drive to rip it, I recommend this drive.  It is inexpensive, external USB, and it has a firmware hack that makes it a great drive for ripping.  Lossless 4K rips are gigantic.

So, finished watching both the 2016 and the 1984 versions.

Not much difference in quality, as far I can tell.

However, maybe I just got used to it a bit and now somehow believing the 1984-version has fewer fuzzy/blurry parts. Maybe not.

One last observation.

Milia's green was just so neon-green vivid than the other colors in the film.

I mean Hikaru's and Milia's Q-Rau's reds, as well as the VT-102's bright orange, were really standouts and really popped, but Milia's greens were just above level than them.

As such, I think this UHD is a good effort.  Maybe 90%-95$ good enough presentation. It's got several unfocused/unsharp blurry/fuzzy parts here and there, but not really that distracting.

The fiim grains, noise, and other stuff are still there in both versions.  The AI just seemed to have upped the colors a bit, or more so like with Milia's greens.

Overall, quite nice presentation. Very worthy addition to all our DYRL versions over the years, I say!

I'm sure they just used seamless branching.  They most likely used the same new 4K version for both 1984 and 2016 versions, then just tacked on the Perfect Edition's end credits concert footage onto the 2016 version.
