Shawn Posted Friday at 05:14 AM Posted Friday at 05:14 AM The colors seem like they are cranked up to 10, and the contrast too. A lot of details seem to be getting lost. Quote
Shawn Posted Friday at 05:18 AM Posted Friday at 05:18 AM If I play it on my OLED TV on my 4k Blu-Ray player, I'm sure its going to POP like never before, it seems insanely vibrant now. But I don't see any grain at all anymore-at least in the little 3x4 inch preview windows they are providing in this preview, which is also going through their youtube encoder, down to me and my video player. The grain could be there, but I don't see it yet. Quote
Shawn Posted Friday at 05:22 AM Posted Friday at 05:22 AM This book pic is from the preview film-so the colors could have changed, but you can see how it compares I know lots of things changed from the preview film to the final film, apparently the laser color was one, so I wouldn't say this is wrong. Shawn Posted Friday at 05:25 AM Posted Friday at 05:25 AM Now we need someone with a nice DYRL Cel to chime in with a pic, so we can compare the actual cel coloring to the old scan to the 4k Quote
Shawn Posted Friday at 05:28 AM Posted Friday at 05:28 AM some comments on the youtube page for the non-vpn-ers It seems the color saturation is a common item in the discussions. ALSO-the preview they provided is NOT in HDR and only 1080p, so it could actually look better in person. Not bashing yet, but I am a little concerned right now LOL ************ On sale January 29, 2025! [Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? 4K Remaster Comparison Video] Will it be resurrected for us too? Beyond the 40-year cycle I like the nostalgia of the traditional version.❤️ When I see something that I know is old, it's too vivid and it's disgusting, but I can see that it's beautiful, but I don't think that the conventional version is inferior. The colours are deeper and there is a sense of depth. To be honest, both are good, so I bought advance tickets and am looking forward to seeing them in theaters next week! If it improves the out-of-focus areas, it's worth buying just for that. The quality of the original is so high. I'm a guy in his 50s who has watched the original version over and over again. I want young people to watch it in 4K and understand the amazing work of the animators at the time who created it without using CG. I'll go see the 4K remaster in the theater.‼️ The already amazing "Angel Paint" is about to get even more amazing. It's heartwarming. The colors are beautiful and the fine details are clear. I saw it at the cinema back then and have watched it on VHS and DVD many times throughout the years. Even though I know the story, it's worth watching the improved 4K remaster again. I've seen it over 100 times and still get goosebumps This was the first movie I was ever taken to see. I still haven't found a more divine comedy than Do You Remember Love? Of course, Angel Paint and Little White Dragon are also good. I'm 62 years old and I can't help but cry just listening to music. I need to change my plans to buy a blue disk this year... By the way, are the octopus missiles flying properly? "It's a beautiful image. It's unbelievable. It's hand-drawn." Certainly, when you look at the paper, the resolution is the same as on the right. The colors are so strong that it makes the sense of distance seem a bit off. I prefer the color of the conventional version The colors look a lot different with HDR... I guess that's the color they wanted to bring out... As far as I can tell from watching it on my smartphone, the conventional version has lighter colors, making it brighter and easier to see the shape, while the 4K version has darker colors, making it harder to see. I'm looking forward to seeing how it looks when I actually watch it on a 4K TV monitor. (I don't have a TV environment yet that I can watch it on... but I've got a PS5 Pro, VR2, and headphones for watching movies, so I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like.) It's amazing how beautiful it is to begin with A full 40 years... It's strange... I feel like I saw this movie a long time ago... why?⁉︎ I was in elementary school at the time... I was going to see a movie. I was surprised at how beautiful it was. Of course, the neck-choking scene has been remastered in 4K and is now more vivid, right? I'm worried that it might have been blurred again... I was reminded once again that Macross's soundtrack is really great. The previous Blu-ray had some extremely blurry scenes, but there hasn't been a comparison of those scenes so I'm waiting for the review. I don't want to be critical of a new release, but to be honest, the "conventional" version has more natural and beautiful colors. It's a theatrical film, so the contrast shouldn't be so sharp, but it's a shame that the dark space scenes at 0:57 ( there's an explanation for the opposite at 1:06 ) and the countless stars and nebulae in the background are blurred . Geniuses become more genius I decided to attend the F and Delta screening event over the New Year holidays, and I felt like I had been given the backbone to face the historically difficult year of 2025. I'm also looking forward to Ai Obo on the 25th. Everyone, let's be careful not to catch a big cold and gather together like Vajra. It just looks like the color has gotten darker. These are their natural colors. Max and Milia were so in love back then... I feel ashamed that I was satisfied with the conventional images.‼️ I wonder how long the remaster business will last. This is truly "Yakdeculture!" image quality! (>▽<*) Why is the laser at 2 minutes 26 seconds red? 2:26 What? The color of Regard's beam is completely different. What does that mean? The space scenes were dark, so to brighten them up they were whitish, but they got rid of that and left the dark scenes bright and beautiful. I want to see it on the big cinema screen for the first time in 40 years. It may be a good thing that the picture quality has improved, but I personally prefer the picture quality of the time. I think the realism of the colors and sound quality of the time is important. The soundtrack was composed by Kentaro Haneda, who was in charge of the soundtracks for Ishihara Productions' representative work "Seibu Keisatsu" Part 2 & Part 3, Sugako Hashida's drama "Wataru Seken wa Oni Bakari", "Space Cobra" based on the original work by Buichi Terasawa, and Hayao Miyazaki's "The Great Detective Sherlock Holmes". I would also like to see a 45 rpm box set of the soundtrack and a high-resolution DVD-Audio release. Hmm, on the contrary, there are some scenes that are hard to watch, some scenes where they're both good and it's hard to choose, some scenes where you can see they're both similar and it's hard to tell what the difference is, and some scenes where they're clearly more beautiful and impressive. So, is it OK to keep both forever? The environment is ready, so now I just have to wait for the DVD.😊 I hope I can watch it.😊 The 2K footage on the regular BD that comes with it is also down-converted from this 4K remaster, so can we say that the picture quality is better than that of BDs that have been released up until now? I wonder if 4K UHD is recorded in HDR or SDR because it's not written in the specifications... Personally, I think it's the pinnacle of cel animation. I've reserved it. My only concern is whether the gory scenes have been fixed. You won't notice it unless you compare it closely with the conventional Blu-ray, but since it's remastered, the color depth and so on are probably quite different. I'll buy it. The Blu-ray that came with the game was disappointing because of the terrible noise, but I wonder how the scene at the beginning where Macross appears is going to turn out? If it's been improved, I'd like to buy it. I like the previous blurry look for explosions and flashes because it gives a better feel to the atmosphere... The shadows on the skin are too clear, which makes it feel unnatural... I prefer the 4K for the mechanical parts though... It's very pretty, but the magenta seems to be a bit too pronounced.😅 I guess the decapitation is just a cover up with the light... I think the saturation of the conventional version is more accurate... but it would have toned down the anime-like feel to a certain extent. I think there's a difference if you compare them, but when you're watching you're immersed in the story so you probably won't notice the difference, but I've already pre-ordered it (^^;; Frankly, I buy it for the angel paint. The colors are better, but I don't feel like there's been an absolute improvement in the "image quality." Only the movie version has a long interlude (╹◡╹) The saturation is too high. If I were the color designer, I would not approve this. On the other hand, isn't the conventional version amazing?😅 It's good to compare the main part, but what I'm most curious about is how much the quality of the excerpted and edited part from Flashback 2012 at the end of the special edition has improved this time. I was disappointed that the quality of the remaster on 2kBD was not much different from the old master. I understand that only the master from the video editing still exists, so we can't expect a big improvement in quality... Honestly, the conventional version is good enough based on this footage, but I wonder if there will be any difference when playing this in a 4K environment? I think it will probably be stretched, so the color will be somewhere between the conventional version I'm watching now and the 4K version. The traditional one is better. Hmm, I wonder. From what I saw on YouTube, the battle scenes in the remaster are too dark, and the original version seems easier to see. Since it's not intended for television broadcast, I hope they leave the gory scenes as they are without blurring them. Just increasing the saturation isn't good enough. I want a remake or a new cut Protoculture remastering now I don't want to buy something that doesn't even have Dolby Atmos audio. I don't need the 2016 revised version, so just sell it in the 1984 theatrical release format for cheap. (edited) The color tone is not even worth mentioning, as it was just a darker version of the color that could be adjusted on the deck or monitor. I'm concerned about the quality of the flashback up-conversion. Was the master lost in the first place, and was a master that had the best image quality on LD ever found, or was it an up-conversion from an existing medium? It will be interesting to see how far it has come. Although it has always been said to be in the condition it was when it was released, it has always been in a censored state, and I'm not sure if this is really the condition it was when it was released. I don't think there's much difference between high-resolution and hand-drawn Showa-era animation. Recent animations, however, are much better because they use CG to express even the smallest details. To be honest, I already have the Blu-ray version, so maybe it's okay. I don't even have a player for it. Quote
Jeff J Posted Friday at 01:06 PM Posted Friday at 01:06 PM I wasn't planning on getting the 4K disc, but it's just kind of disappointing that there doesn't seem to be one definitive version of the movie to purchase. Quote

Shoji : Basically, we proposed a direction for the image quality, had Big West and Bandai Namco Filmworks take a look at it, and once the direction was decided, we had Director Shoji Kawamori confirm it. There's no point if it's not better than the last time, and I'm sure users have high expectations, so this time we worked with the 2024 version in mind. --It feels like the graininess has been reduced considerably. Shoji: That's a matter of personal preference. I myself also like to have a grainy feel. However, Director Kawamori is still working on new works, so I think he chose something that feels closer to current anime. I've worked on a variety of projects with other directors, and recently more and more of them have chosen less grain. It feels like it's closer to current digital anime, but I'm not trying to make it a modern anime, so I left it in to a degree that you can feel the graininess. Kawamori seems no different from Lucas or Jim Cameron with their choices for their remasters. I'm still getting this and the 4k will probably give the film fresh a new look as A New Hope did when the SW special editions came out. The 4k Aliens release really changed the color and atmosphere of the film so there's a huge backlash from fans. Hope one day a fan team can get an original 35mm roll of DYRL and do as the team behind Project 4k77 did for the original trilogy restoration and give us a restoration without the loss of detail. lavinrac Posted Sunday at 02:28 PM Posted Sunday at 02:28 PM (edited) Honestly, I have the older editions, I am not at all worried about the changes. if they aren't to my liking i can watch the old one. I get that the material is kind of 'sacred' But thankfully, with physical media, you don't lose access to the version you may prefer, (at least Blu Ray.. i can't play the VHS now) and With DYRL so far they haven't lucas'ed it and mucked with STORY elements and added a bunch of stuff they wish they had done. I my change my tune when it arrives. Edited Sunday at 02:28 PM by lavinrac Quote
