Powered Convoy Posted December 17 Posted December 17 Yeah, I've been very excited about this release for months now. Got my fiance to watch the original TV series and now we're waiting for the film. Granted she didn't like the extra episodes after the original ending (too much drama :D). Quote
Powered Convoy Posted December 20 Posted December 20 I'm also glad that 'Angel Paint' is on this and remastered. The Flashback 2012 DVD and Blu-ray are rough. Quote
Shawn Posted December 20 Posted December 20 I am impatiently waiting for any sort of new trailer or new info on the release. For being the ultimate scan/restoration I thought they be hyping it up a bit more releasing more screenshots or something by now. In the back of mind I am dreading an AI restoration and all grain removal. I'm sure it's not that but give me something new to make my $150 purchase more comfortable to swallow. Quote

Granted, it's not really as much of a character in DYRL as it was in the series. Still looks nice though. Quote

It would have been nice...but he's more of the Macross Character designer....at least he included what is arguably the most iconic hero mech in the film... Quote

Shawn Posted Saturday at 05:06 AM Posted Saturday at 05:06 AM I can see how someone getting sold on a restoration service for multiple TV series, and missing something like that as annoying it can be, just because of the sheer volume of content to audit. Those Lucy background faces are horrific, but in the comments they say a replacement disc is an option, so I'm thankful they owned up to it. DYRL is just 90m, someone better be monitoring that thing closely so they do not release anything close to that mess. I personally do not want to see an AI upscale cleanup of the movie, I want to see what Miyatake and Kawamori and Itano and the rest actually drew, with the best available scanning technology. If some scenes are blurry they are blurry, thats life, I'm not sure I want to see an AI guess at what is there and try to redraw it. Just one month to go, give us some more teaser pics already. Quote

Some things are also meant to be blurry out of artistic choice. The Lucy clip is a good example—clearly depicting those background characters totally changes the focus of the shot from Ricardo onto them (nevermind how poorly it was done)! Fixing animation errors (E.g. adding missing missiles, colour correcting Focker's VF-1S) is one thing, but changing the artist's focus by de-blurring? That's a bridge too far! lavinrac Posted 21 hours ago Posted 21 hours ago Really looking forward to getting this, I've bought many of the Japanese releases thus far since Laserdisc. With as many copies as I have, I'm actually hoping they do something (tasteful) about the blurry scenes.. I'm not talking about removing intentional blur.. but the blu ray versions have a number of scenes that are quite blurry- GHOSTING - like double image in some places, as any of you who own it know. Has anyone researched what caused that to happen? Is it something they could fix by rescanning from film if it exists? Is there a way to remove the effect digitally without AI 'weirdness' ? I'm all for film grain and preserving the artists vision, but as a visual artist myself, I can't imagine anyone intended for the GHOSTING effect. Not sure if the technology to remove that is out there but I'd love to see it happen. I also like the idea, with all these new and 'controversial' technologies' of having a set include 2 versions.. uncleaned, and 'remastered' .. For example I have the Star Trek original series blu ray, and they redid all the special effects, but there's both versions on the disc, and you can swap between them. this is really amazing because in most cases it enhances something, in a few it detracts.. but having the original there as well makes the experiment worthwhile and inoffensive. If Lucas had given us the original versions of Star Wars along with his 'specialized' versions it would've been a lot easier to swallow. This is all probably way more than they plan to put into this, but its a shame, for such a monumental achievement, an example of the best ever of hand drawn anime. Quote
