Zethus Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Since most of the Macross franchise is to be available on Disney Plus later this year, there’s a chance that the series may get some English Dubs so who would you think would voice which character in English? Quote
Zethus Posted April 7 Author Posted April 7 My pick for the main trio Alto - Bryce Papenbrock Sheryl Nome - Cristina Vee Ranka Lee - Brianna Knickerbocker or Cassandra Lee Morris Quote
Seto Kaiba Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Eh... I'd expect that they'll be subs-only when they debut since most of them haven't been dubbed before. Production of any dub(s) would likely fall on the various distributors who licensed the titles for global distribution like Nozomi Entertainment and Animeigo... and they might not even bother given that subs-only is basically the norm for streaming anime these days. If they were going to Sony Crunchyroll, I'd expect a dub to follow eventually months or a couple years after the fact because they do their own via their merger with Funimation. Given how proprietorial many distributors are about their stables of voice actors, I wouldn't even begin to hazard a guess at who'd get cast for who. Quote
Hikaru Ichijo SL Posted April 10 Posted April 10 I loathe dubs in general. But ones with singing just sound stupid. The voices do not match. Quote

Do they even dub songs anymore? I don't really do dubs anymore, but last I recall the practice of re-recording or outright replacing songs was largely abandoned by the mid-1990s because it was expensive and the distributors increasingly felt it was unnecessary for most audiences. The only distributor I recall doing it past that point was 4Kids. Quote

Jack Black as Basara In all honesty, I highly doubt any previous Macross anime will get dubbed, except for perhaps future upcoming ones. Who would fund that kind of production just for a Disney+ stream release? Edited April 11 by VertexNebula Quote

But to be honest, it will probably just be a bunch of the usual no name over actors they usually get for modern dubs. Christopher Walken for Exedol’s head in Macross 7 please Quote

I did see Island episode 12 on youtube and when Tamura Yukari starts singing, I fell over laughing. I meant that dubs for Musical animes just don't work. Quote

After some research, it seems that this practice was Not Quite Dead as recently as the early 2010s. Funimation apparently occasionally/rarely indulged by recording English versions of OPs or EDs for a few titles including Ouran High School Host Club (2006), Fruits Basket (2001), and Free! (2013). I'd thought the practice had died out back in the 90's, as the last case I could recall that wasn't 4Kids replacing songs outright was Tenchi Universe back in '97. Quote

I know that Seto no Hanayome 2007 (My bride is a Mermaid) did it for an insert song, Your Gravitation. Quote
rsvictor1976 Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Since it'll be on Disney, it would be amazing if Disney produced the dubs themselves like they did with the Studio Ghibli stuff. Quote

I’m kinda torn. Most anime lately has bad dubs, and Disney usually doesn’t hire great voice actors, usually just normal actors, but that would probably be the better option. It’s too bad it’s not like the old days when there were great voice actors for cartoons. Then again there were some bad ones in the mix as well Quote

Disney's a sublicensee, so the dubbing will probably be done by the distributors who licensed the shows from Big West. Quote
AN/ALQ128 Posted May 9 Posted May 9 The amount of anime dubs that are decent can be counted on a pair of hands. Macross is a very VA driven franchise, so I don't really see much point in licensees investing in a dub. Quote
Graham Posted May 10 Posted May 10 Zero interest ever in a dub of anything Macross or any anime for that matter. Quote
Hikaru Ichijo SL Posted May 10 Posted May 10 I say cut out the dub and sell it at a cheaper price. Quote
Big s Posted May 10 Posted May 10 I personally prefer subtitles, but in anime with fast action, I kinda like the option of a dub so I don’t miss anything. But if the option is no dub or complete cringe dub, then I’d rather just read it Quote

Guessing this is like winning 11 times in a row in blackjack at the casino... Do we need C3PO to give us the odds? But as it's Disney pushed, even it's the licensers that will dub it, I expect some already Disney appeared stars to feature in some of the voices, at least as cameos. That asides, I'm glad dub is coming... I don't understand Japanese, and don't plan to learn to it, so finally I can sit back and switch off on the coach without reading and disengaging from the visuals. Edited May 13 by Raikkonen Quote
Master Dex Posted May 13 Posted May 13 There's no confirmation of any dubs. It's honestly very unlikely to happen still. Quote
