Mog Posted Sunday at 11:52 PM Posted Sunday at 11:52 PM No, in the subtitles. Those words don’t show up at all, even though I know I’m hearing them. Quote
Master Dex Posted Monday at 03:03 AM Posted Monday at 03:03 AM Well I have yet to watch Frontier on stream actually, I'm still finishing a 7 rewatch. If I remember I'll watch for that. Quote
kajnrig Posted Monday at 04:20 AM Posted Monday at 04:20 AM Broke down and got a Hulu sub to watch M7 for the first time. Two episodes in and... boy, it is 90s as HELLLL . All the hallmarks of 90s anime, and 90s pop rock. Phew. I honestly don't know if I'll be able to make it all the way through. Just for comparison, I threw on the first two episodes of Frontier and they hold up muuuch better. And there's 50 episodes left to go, AND the OVAs, AND the movies... Quote

I find it a bit tough myself, but I’ve never watched it with non bootleg subs. Quote
Chronocidal Posted Monday at 07:52 AM Posted Monday at 07:52 AM I always felt part of the struggle with 7 was actually that the early episodes really fall into that "monster of the week" formula you get with so many Japanese shows (sentai-especially), where you have a pile of nearly identical episodes that all start out with a minor plot point, and then resolve exactly the same way when the big bad gets driven off by the main characters using their designated super power. I don't remember how many of those episodes there are, but I feel like it didn't really pick up until I got 10-20 episodes in, once they actually developed the setting a bit more. The series could probably be easily condensed down into a 26 episode run with a little editing. Quote
GreenGuy42 Posted Monday at 04:04 PM Posted Monday at 04:04 PM Last time I watched Macross 7 was sometime in the early 2000's with a bootleg using terrible English subtitles. I'm loving being able to watch it in an official way. I sold all my Macross toys back in college to cover bills. I've just purchased the new DX Chogokin YF-19 and Hi-Metal VF-4. I even got my wife, who generally hates anime, to watch Macross Plus! It's been a long time since I've been this excited about Macross. Quote

Graham Posted yesterday at 07:57 AM Posted yesterday at 07:57 AM Macross 7 is awesome, I absolutely love it, I just finished what must be my 5th or 6th re-watch over the decades, since first watching it on bootleg VHS tapes back in 1994. BOMBA! Quote

I also had that same sense after those first few episodes, that it could be condensed fairly easily. I'm surprised there's no compilation movie, either. 9 hours ago, Graham said: Macross 7 is awesome, I absolutely love it, I just finished what must be my 5th or 6th re-watch over the decades, since first watching it on bootleg VHS tapes back in 1994. BOMBA! See, this is what I mean. Everyone who gets through the whole thing LOVES it, but everyone who gets through the whole thing also says that it takes a looong time to get going (and reuses a lot of animation, which boy were they not kidding. Not even GOOD reused animation, either... We really were spoiled by Zero/Frontier ). Edited 16 hours ago by kajnrig Quote

locidm Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago My brother is getting back into Macross after 30 years thanks to the streaming on Hulu. I recommended him to start with zero, then plus, then go straight to Frontier. He asked about 7, I said it's really hard to watch unless you're a big Macross fan. While there are some charming moments, the plot just does not move forward much. Then he said, oh that sounds great, because he can watch it in the background and not worry about missing key moments. Seto Kaiba Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago (edited) I've rewatched Macross 7 a few times over the years. I remember I absolutely hated it when I first watched it, partly because of the awful subs and the first half endlessly recycling the same 2-3 songs, but mainly because Basara is a pillock. Some 20 years later, I love Macross 7. I still think Basara is a pillock, but I sympathize so much with Mylene, Gamlin, and even Gigile being absolutely confounded by his bullsh*t and visibly restraining their desire to throttle him at many points in the series. davidwhangchoi Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago (edited) Macross 7 in Gundam terms was comparable to Double Zeta. Starts out with ridicule like ZZ and a slow burn in character development. The build up and payoff at the end is great, M7 series is one of the most rewatchable out of the Macross franchise. I can't say the same for Zero, I'll just fast forward to the battle scenes and stop after. Edited 10 hours ago by davidwhangchoi Quote

Of course, given his hyperfixation on music and inability to pick up social cues, he's probably just high-functioning autistic rather than an idiot... not that that makes him any less obnoxious. Either way, it's easier to treat him as a walking plot device rather than a character in his own right. Quote

camk4evr Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago I admit, I only watched Macross 7 once (I can't remember where I put the bootleg dvds). I started rewatching Macross 7 last week and found that I still like it. I still think any episode can be improved by someone beating Basara about the head and shoulders with a 2x4 for a few minutes.
