MOD Note:
In order to better diagnose issues, please add some specificity if you encounter issues.
i.e. What device are you watching from? TV? Computer? Mobile device (phone or tablet)? Are you casting from a device? (from a mobile device, Roku, Apple TV, etc)? Are you using the Disney+ app with Hulu integration or the Hulu app directly? Is the app built in to your TV (i.e. Amazon Fire-based TV) Are CC subtitles generated from your TV or being generated from your casting device? Include timestamps if you are noticing an issue on a particular scene on a particular show. Etc.

This will help others attempting to recreate the issue.

I haven't tried to confirm this yet, but I'm getting the feeling while watching Frontier that those fades to black aren't in between  shots, but are actually covering up content we should be seeing.

That’s basically unfortunately what they do on Hulu. Most anime has one break in an episode and it’s very obvious that it’s when you see the eyecatch animation. The other fade outs are where the extra ads are supposed to be that were put in for Hulu. It does seem as though they attempted to try and put them in decent places, but sometimes there’s a little split where even the music fades and comes back in, so there’s a little loss there for a split second to a full second.

I haven’t had the time to test everything yet, but I so far only saw issues with Plus, The Plus movie abound flashback. My phone is an I phone and the subs are there  and easy to toggle on or off. While on my tv the menu for the subs is there, but it doesn’t allow you to change them to English and says they’re unavailable. That’s using the Hulu app on the tv. But as a workaround I tried casting from my I phone and that actually worked and I hadn’t noticed anything wrong yet with plus or flashback. Haven’t tried it on the movie version of plus all the way through yet, but in the few minutes I did watch it seems alright.

For future troubles with subtitles not working: I had an issue with the subs on Hulu not working, so I tested them on Disney+ (I have the bundle). They wouldn't work there. So I reset the CC settings on my TV, then the various apps. Nada. So I then went into a series I know the captions worked, in this case What If Season 2. They began to work. I switched over to Macross Zero. The captions started working.

What strikes me as weird with the whole CC thing is that there is other foreign language content on Hulu--including anime--that uses proper subtitles.

I canceled my Disney+ subscription awhile back. Question: Do you need the Disney+ / Hulu bundle to see Macross shows? Or would just the Disney+ subscription do the trick?

If you want to use the Disney+ app to watch, you need one of the bundles that includes Hulu.

You need Hulu to watch it, bundled or not.

I have a standalone Disney+ subscription without Hulu and I can view the Macross series available to the U.S. using either the website or app through my TV.

Oh this is good to know! THank you. Sounds like you only need either Disney+ or Hulu by itself and a bundle is not required.

That... Shouldn't be true. It's been shown before that only Disney+ tells you to unlock Hulu shows by paying for Hulu, bundle or not. I'm not sure how that can work unless one forgot they had a subscription to both.

Yeah, you definitely need Hulu to watch it, bundle or not. D+ isn’t necessary, but if you have the Hulu bundle, you can watch on D+

I have a Disney+ account without Hulu, and I can search and see the listings of the various Macross titles, but can't actually play the content. It tells me to upgrade/unlock with Hulu in order to watch the material.

I had a feeling that was the case, so you're really just watching them in another country then.

Valid if that works for you, but it's not the way to natively do it in the US.

I am genuinely pissed about the cut Macross 7 scene as i was gonna binge all of macross legally but this frakks over my plans as all they'd have to do is add a simple 5 second disclaimer. Mind you i've been waiting since i was around 8 for the remainder of  macross series as i had read about them on this very forum after i had rented the ADV macross DVDs, both the film & OVA versions of Macross II &  PLUS on VHS, with me owning the uncut movie tape from Best Film & Video along with the Harmony Gold Macros pilot (4 episode version)

The scene is not missed. At all. Quite the opposite.

Yeah honestly you're probably better off.

I’m a bit of a purist and don’t really like when things are added or cut from films. I do sometimes give a pass to certain directors cuts that had scenes that were cut, but added back in for completion. But as cringy as this scene was, it still feels wrong to leave it out. But at least it’s only a short scene that’s not gonna harm the rest of the viewing.

The scene served no purpose and I don't understand why they included it to begin with. But, this is probably the wrong thread for this discussion.

I’m not saying it really did, just that I really don’t like censorship. And it probably is the right thread for a discussion over something being left in or out on streaming, just gotta be a little delicate about the descriptions of what was taken out.

The fading to black finally got to me in episode 12 of Frontier, so I hopped on the old interwebs to dig up a copy of the episode. The good news is after comparing the two, we aren't missing any content with those fades to black as I had wrongly suspected.

It was fun to rewatch Frontier again.

Was planning to only watch the first 2 or 3 eps and wound up binging up to Episode 14.

There’s still some silly or oddball plot concepts and contrivances.  But the songs and dogfights are still top notch.

The great thing is there has been a bit more talk about Macross in some of the forums i'm in that never talked about it since it's been released in NA on Hulu.

I'm glad Macross is accessible to more people and there's more interest.

For those wondering about the delayed subs in certain episodes through Hulu, *not all series has an issue.

It seems to be a problem on Hulu on another anime I checked, so it isn't exclusive to Macross.  A few episodes of Gundam Wing (TV Series) on Hulu has out of sync subs. while some of the episodes have no issues. (double checked streaming off my laptop and TV so it's not hardware related).

I'll live with it.

Well, can't say I'm surprised by the censorship on the M7 OVA, but it's not the first time Disney has pulled this stunt either....previous marvel films and even Santa Clause have been censored after original runs.

I've been chugging along with the episodes, pretty much finished Zero and 7, and have def been noticing subs lagging towards the end of the Macross 7 series, more specifically 48-50 were way off their timing.

I know some have been complaining about the fade to black scene cuts, I've experienced stuff like that for years, more specifically it happens on the Hulu side only, and not other streaming platforms. I think it's just something that's a bug or a glitch with hulu....not something nefarious like they're cutting scenes or censoring more than what we already know or any of that stuff. Like I'll be watching an episode of The Rookie, and bam the black screen pops up.

Reports have the episode being edited on other platforms as well (though, not all). So this isn't just a Disney thing. And again, this isn't streaming on Disney. It's streaming on Star internationally, and Hulu in the US. That both integrate with Disney is besides the point. I can't speak for Star, but there is plenty of content on Hulu that is the exact opposite of Disney-friendly.

Reminds me of the giant photo of 'Poor Things' that adorned Disney+ when the film hit streaming. 😅
