Seeing that we're gonna be playing 'Idol for the next 6-12 months, this thread will stay open for a week before going into hibernation. It would be interesting if there was audience participation this time around but that won't happen. *sets timer*

As worried as I am about Sunrise doing this one, the one part I have absolutely complete confidence in is that they'll once again pick an amazing performer to be the lead singer. 😀

They’re usually talented, but unfortunately increasingly boring with each new series after Plus

I must admit, i did think Frontier was just a rehash of the OG, but as time went on, i recognize frontier for the fantastic series frontier was.

And yes, am converted that frontier's OST, to me anyway, appeals to me more than SDFM or plus.

*gasp* i wouldn't have believed it myself.

i agree with you on the challenges facing Macross ....its not only the story it has to contend with but also the musicality that synchs w the story...

And having universally enjoyed musicality...wow talk abt a challenge... as different generations not to mention cultures, have different tastes..

...and then there are those darn valk's and their transformations...🙃

For me, it was always a bit tough to feel like music justifying a plot device in one series. Then two kinda felt a bit of a stretch. Plus at least had people kinda hypnotized by AI. 7 felt again like a stretch. Then zero at least was minimalistic in comparison. But Frontier had it as a necessity , but here we go again and delta just felt goofy again. I guess they’re gonna have to come up with a whole new badguy that’s immune to previous sound plots and has to be affected by music in a completely new way.

the other issue is that the music is kinda generic, like if Taylor swift could just go to some warring region and the conflict basically ends because she put on one massive show. There needs to be better variety in the music chosen if this franchise is going to continue using pop idols as a solution to everything. Its getting to more than half a century or far more depending on the timeline of the new show from when things were originally taking place and the music feels like it’s kinda stuck in the last century.

If they want this new show to be memorable, it’s really gonna have to do something strong visually, but also plot wise with the music. And it’s gonna need music that sounds far newer than what they’ve been using since most kinda sounds like lat 1990’s pop or late 1980’s rock and it’s probably gonna take place sometime past 2060

Why must it be singing (I know, because music sales), but from a story and music perspective it would get more interesting if, say, an entire orchestra could generate via means beyond singing.

Or they could go the Thunderbolt route and choose something completely out there, like Tango... the singing is highly operatic.

Sharon was a very different idol in all ways. They could go the Ishtar route with an alien singer as a way to make a different music experience. Still, if albums are how Macross makes its money, we have a pretty good idea what to expect.

Please no! That was still the worst soundtrack I’ve ever heard. It was like a bunch of preschool kids music class had a horrible New York traffic accident

I'm personally fine with J-pop or J-rock again.

I love the songs and BGM of SDFM/DYRL/Mac 7/M+/Mac Frontier. Even Walkure has grown on me recently.

About the only soundtrack that really didn't grab me with either the songs or BGM was Mac Zero.

I understand where you are coming from.  There are many creative decisions that Kawamori-san has taken for reasons other than story.*  However, as the music labels are more or less directly sponsoring the anime (in return for music sales), it's hard for any new Macross series to move beyond the popular musical genres.  I guess one could always look to "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" for a taste of what a non-singing musical encounter with aliens would be like...

* Such as:

  • VF-171 as the main fighter in Macross F (reason: the VF-19 was judged to look too similar to the hero VF-25)
  • dancing VFs in Macross Delta (reason: to justify the existence of piloted transforming jets in the era of unmanned drones)
  • not using Zentradi ships in allied forces in later series (reason: to not confuse the casual viewer)

At the same time, Kawamori-san includes quite esoteric details, such as is making sure that the missile exhaust colours are different so that one knows that it was a heat-seeking AIM-9 Sidewinder (orange exhaust) and then a radar-guided AIM-120 AMRAAM (blue exhaust) that were launched in that scene in Macross Zero when Shin's F-14 shoots down the MiG-29 with a pair of missiles! 🤷‍♂️

New song.

Augh!

Apologies to her fans, but that's just quite awful stuff.

I rather the producers go back to re-hiring Yoko Kanno and doing more epic MacrossPlus-like music stuff.

Or heck! Get at least Akino Arai, ffs!

I’m kinda thinking a more interesting story might be something like an independent label that gains access to bands and arts from several genres. Like a rock band, a pop star, maybe a rapper, a country band , maybe a blues band and maybe some kinda techno industrial thing. And the plot uses an enemy that doesn’t just have one mood requiring alternating uses of the different genres of music maybe even coming together to put their backgrounds aside to try and do a we are the world type final moment for the climax of the show.

but it could just all end up totally stupid

Macross is likely going be associated with j-pop or something easy the young ones can listen to....after all its all abt making the most money out of concert ticketing/music sales moolah...

the only way we would get more diverse stuff is if macross had a parallel series to experiment with...but i dont see that happening anytime soon..

It's a fairly generic, opening credits anime song. It is what it is.

Anyone know what Satelight are up to right now? Maybe they're working on an OVA while Sunrise do the show, which would allow them to explore other music genres as has been the case in the past.

I really like May'n's rendition of the audition song.

I hope we get Junna's take on it as well.

I wasn't super enamored with the song. Then I heard this May'n take. Then I went back to the Suzuki Minori take. And now I dig it.

Their plan is to make us listen to different iterations of the song and brainwash us into liking it before the series comes out. I'd be amazed if they can get every Macross idol, including Mari Iijima, to do a version.

Satelight has been doing the latest Aquarion, and Sentai Red Isekai animes. The latter even just had an OG Aquarion cameo, and Kawamori also designed a separate villian mech for the same ep too. Don't think they could have had time to be cooking anything else.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the clarification.
