Cancer is, officially, the worst.  My aunt, who'd generally lived a very healthy lifestyle, started feeling a little sick after Halloween one year.  At first her doctor told her she was just dehydrated, but after getting a second opinion they found she had liver cancer by Thanksgiving.  She didn't even make it until Easter.  Now, I've experienced deaths, but it was usually in someone older ("they lived a good life") or it felt, in some way, the result of their own choices (another aunt who was heavily into drugs and alcohol, a grandmother who died in her 60s that was a chain smoker, a cousin who committed suicide, etc).  My aunt getting liver cancer was, I think, the first time I realized just how truly unfair life can be and how indifferent the universe is.

My condolences to George and his family.  I know what they're going through, and it sucks.
