tekering Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 Thanks to @sh9000, I've acquired Playmates' entire wave of First Contact action figures, most of which are a reliable 1:12th scale: Despite their pristine, case-fresh condition (on unpunched cards, at that!), I was able to get them for less than half their original retail value (THIRTY years ago...!) because Playmates Star Trek figures have aged like unpasteurized milk. 😝 Worf and Riker aren't to scale, of course (or proportionally-accurate, even), so they'll require some customization... and the less said about their Zefram Cochrane figure, the better. 😒 Nonetheless, I'm happy to finally have a few Star Trek figures that will (presumably) scale with Nacelle's upcoming line. IronRaptor Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 anyone else here pre-order/support the crowd funded Tomy 1/350 scale refit Enterprise? For me that thing is a dream come true. I had planned on eventually building the 1/350 scale Polar Lights kit, and doing the full Aztek paint scheme on it, hell I still might just for the challenge. However, I think it's great this option for people who don't have the time or skill to build the 1/350 scale enterprise. Quote

"Master Replicas acknowledges nothing has been more popular than the classic 4.75" figures from Playmates, which first debuted in the 90s. Recognizing the place Playmates figures have in a lot of people's hearts, they aim to continue the story of action figures at that size. This new programs does not ask fans to rebuild their collections from scratch, but to add to what they already have." Are you listening, Nacelle? This is why Master Replicas is much more likely to succeed. Quote
sh9000 Posted February 14 Author Posted February 14 Looking forward to collecting all bridge crew members in 1/12 scale. Quote
mechaninac Posted March 4 Posted March 4 NGL, they all look fantastic, some more desirable (Jellico, especially) than others, but all a huge improvement over the limitedly articulated Playmates stuff released around the time First Contact came out, to say nothing of the older smaller scaled fare that could not sit without being awkwardly spread-legged. Quote
Chronocidal Posted March 4 Posted March 4 Gotta say I love them playing directly into the individual histories of the characters, including some of what eventually became memes. The fishtank is such a dumb accessory for a figure, but it's so perfect. Quote
sh9000 Posted March 5 Author Posted March 5 I think I'll order Jellico, Garrett, Sulu, Archer, and Weyoun. Wave 2 Generations Kirk. Quote

The sculpting is certainly nice, but articulation is pretty poor for a 2025 collectible figure. Only 90 degree elbows, missing ab-crunch and torso tilt, no butterfly shoulders, no toe hinge and I'm not even sure there is a waist swivel available or that the head can do much more other than swivel side to side. Ironically Playmates 6" First Contact figures basically had the same range of motion bar ankle articulation 30 years ago. Quote
sh9000 Posted Sunday at 04:17 AM Author Posted Sunday at 04:17 AM I'm ok with the articulation. Quote

In light of how niche of a niche Star Trek has become over the Bad Robot/Alex Kurtzman stewardship of the franchise, and the fact that contemporary figures of the same size tend to msrp at twice, or more, the price point of this upcoming line, Star Wars' non selling inventory of unwanted Disney era garbage characters -- littering discount outlets like Ollies -- notwithstanding, the articulation is more than adequate. I hear they’re really big closer to the eastern side of the country, while over here in the west coast all we hear are YouTube toy archaeologists speaking of legends regarding mountains of Hasbro toys, only to find the fools gold of piles of unwanted Reva and Eternals. Out here we always had Pic’n Save (which always got jokes from kids on the playground) and getting replaced by Big Lots. But I have heard that Ollies is creeping closer and closer here to the west, while In’n Out is trying to slip the double doubles closer and closer to the eastern shores Quote
