we’re doing a pod for most of my collectibles. I think we’re just going to get the movers to get the furniture.

I can't imagine having to pack up all my toys. It would take longer than the rest of the house.

Haha, I loved that show! I never made the connection back then but now I get why her name was Dee Dee. 😁

I’ve done it a few times in the last decade or so. It’s painful. Luckily, it was all short distances but I can tell you I made multiple trips in a Uhaul each time that nearly broke me. The worst are the comic books though. Toys are nothing in terms of density per square inch. Hauling 30 or so long boxes full of comic books up and down stairs is the last thing I ever want to do again. Then there’s the CD collection. Those are about the same pain as comic books and I have about 10 or more big boxes full of CDs and other media. My movers got it easy compared to what I did myself.

heh 1/48 fan racer is shorter than the 1/60th, the back rocket thrusters notwithstanding...

Landing gears would be nice on this fan racer iteration....oh well...
guess how would bandai have the chance to release an updated black gears version next time...🙆‍♂️

The 1/48 Fan Racer is smaller than the old 1/60 kit from Yamato? That's a bit of bummer!

Looking at it too, I think there doesn't appear to be enough space under the pilot's seat to fit in the front landing gear. Perhaps that is why it was never done for both 1/60 and now 1/48 versions..

I wouldn't expect retracting gear, no, but it's still sad that they didn't do the same as they do for the HMR releases, and give you plug-in landing gear.  It wouldn't be hard to drill little holes and make your own for that I suppose.

But yeah, the scale is a massive failure on Bandai's part.  They just utterly flubbed it.  It's still a nice 1/60 for display with the Yamatos though, so not a total loss, since the old Yamato kit is so hard to come by now.

Is the scale wrong though? Looking at the still from the show, Hikaru looks pretty big in it. Did they ever publish dimensions?

The M3 doesn't list any dimensions for the Fan Racer, so I'm guessing not.

As for the front landing gear, the cutaway lineart shows that there's literally no room for it. 😆 But as others have said, it should've come with plug-in landing gears, especially since it's being packaged with a DX.

Macross Chronicle shows the same cutaway @TheLoneWolf posted. It looks like the wheel is sipposed to pop up between the legs or something, given the dark circle there.

They also show the length as slightly more than 5 meters. You can see the measurement in the lower left of the first page below.

So if it's 5m (15ft) 1/48 scale would be 3.75". Anyone have a measurement on the DX Fan Racer nose to tail?

Using some crap calcs from the pic below (the angles make it a mess) I show the Fan Racer at over 4.5"-ish???

If it's scaled to the undersized DX pilots, then yes it will be wrong.

I think we've got the same situation on our hands as the Bandai A-Wing kit.  They scaled it to "1/72," using a published length that just happened to be nonsense.  The 1/48 scale pilot told the actual story.

In this case, they just did the reverse, basing the model on a "canon" value that wasn't big enough.

So, let's test something.

Here's the lineart, compared to a video game body I happen to have handy.  I'm going to be practical here, and assume that no one is going to design an aircraft that is too small for a 6-foot pilot to fly.  The figure is roughly 5'10".

Here's a pair of pics with the Fan Racer scaled to Bandai's value, a 5 meter length.  The grid spacing is 10 cm.

13000547_ss(2021-07-24at01_08.52).jpg.fea8dfb340220d8a032bff7421f7d18a.jpg991504508_ss(2021-07-24at01_09.08).jpg.c5b87c327a715f86e43006bf29919ab0.jpg

Not a lot of room there.  Going to be pretty noisy to fly with his head sticking through the cockpit glass.

Here's a version based the idea that Bandai's Fan Racer is actually 1/60, working out to about 6.1 meters in length.

1554625450_ss(2021-07-24at01_12.30).jpg.eca22f79f5ab3c9f3a0cfa6195b26095.jpg1749766271_ss(2021-07-24at01_12.45).jpg.bc5862a144c90793aebf6a39b7ee31b5.jpg

Still very tight (especially if you consider he carried Minmay on his lap), but at this size, the body actually fits within the outer boundaries of the cockpit.  Could probably lay back a little further for more clearance, and there's actually room ahead of his feet for the pedals and control console.

Definitely not an exact science, since I didn't feel like modeling the whole plane.  The Bandai Hikaru has no trouble fitting because he's not actually 1/48 scale.  I did try a 1/48 model pilot in the cockpit, with pretty predictable results.  I tried to use an F-16 pilot to get a better body position, but the arms wouldn't let him sit down into the seat, so I just went with the best fit I could find.

On the one hand, I'm disappointed not to have one that actually works with 1/48 scale planes, but at the same time, I never got a chance to grab the 1/60 Yamato kit, so this will still display nicely with the 1/60 VF-1s.  I seriously doubt Bandai will release a DX Angel Bird anyhow. :p

Wow! Thanks for the thorough explanation, @Chronocidal:good:

Having the DX Fan Racer at roughly 1/60 scale, I'm still going to bug you guys for your extra ones if you decided to sell. ;)

Seeing a picture like this just shows how far Toy design has come in recent years.

Everything used to be so clunky and bulky...if you wanted accuracy you went to plastic or highly detailed garage kits.

Now everything just looks so damn good-and it comes that way out of the box. Can't wait for my VF-1D to ship-looking forward to adding it to the mini display.
I do think it is going to be Gerwalk mode...this pose just looks perfect to me.

Looks like Hobby-Genki has shipped my VF-1D. A little odd though. First, according to them  DHL and FedEx are the two options for Canada (still no EMS to Canada) but they just went with DHL without even checking with me. Not looking forward to the extra handling fees DHL is notorious for. Second I got two emails, one saying it was shipped and another saying it is in transit, yet when I track on the DHL site it says the label has been generated but shipment has not been handed over to DHL yet. Oh well, at least it seems like it is on it's way and Hobby-Genki did not ask for extra shipping payment which was a nice surprise.

I received mine from Luna Park a few days ago. Delivered DHL to me in Canada and there were zero extra fees or taxes. I’m wondering if I will get billed later but DHL doesn’t usually do that. I’m also wondering if Luna Park is somehow fulfilling by Amazon Japan because the delivery time and price for DHL is very similar to AJ DHL shipments. Anyway it’s bizarre but I’m really happy I seemed to have escaped the extra fees. So far.

Despite the figure not scaling correctly the Fan racer does. Actually it's too big to be 1/48. Check my calcs. I'm really tired.

Fan Racer spec is 5m.

-5m = 16.4ft

-16.4ft = 196.8in

-Fan Racer actual measurement 4.25"

-196.8in / 4.25in = 46.30

Fan Racer actual scale 1/46.30

I'd say that pretty close to 1/48.
