geck Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Amazing box art...the art really sells the kits. Got my shipping notice! Quote
Urashiman Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Pictures of box content and instructions as usual on 1999.co.jp. https://www.1999.co.jp/10916567 The instructions are straight forward. The pilot made from 5 pieces is a bit crazy though hahaha Quote
Thom Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 Frak! It will cost me 80 to 90 bucks to buy/ship! Quote

The fun part: EMS was 26.something and the cheaper surface mail without tracking was 25.something. So I went with EMS. Quote
electric indigo Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Some inspiration for the CF builders: Quote
Urashiman Posted December 19, 2022 Posted December 19, 2022 some tweet on people building the VF-171 Quote

Chronocidal Posted December 20, 2022 Posted December 20, 2022 (edited) Wait, does the kit come with both cockpit options? Or did someone scratch build the canopy on that one? Seriously though, that is gorgeous. It warms my heart to, after over a decade, FINALLY see a 171 in something remotely resembling actual squadron markings. It looks so good without all of the Bandai splatter on the design. Edited December 20, 2022 by Chronocidal Quote
Urashiman Posted December 20, 2022 Posted December 20, 2022 looks like someone is going extra already and is scratch building super packs for the VF-171. Quote

Duymon Posted December 22, 2022 Posted December 22, 2022 Looking at the snapped up models It doesn't seem like these guys have more detail than the Bandai 1/60th; they just don't have all the gaps and holes that the 1/60 has to facilitate transformation. Anyone got one in hand to compare them side by side? Quote
Thom Posted December 27, 2022 Posted December 27, 2022 Dear Modeller's Anonymous. my name is Thom and I have a problem... I just bought two of the new Wave VF-171s, just a day after buying a second Wave VF-4. My wallet is not talking to me right now... Quote

Thom Posted December 28, 2022 Posted December 28, 2022 Nice one @Urashiman. Open that bad girl up so we may live vicariously through thee! Mine won't be here for a month or two, as I chose the cheaper (slowest) delivery option. Quote

Urashiman Posted December 28, 2022 Posted December 28, 2022 (edited) More stuff the plastic is a dirty/used/old white. clear orange canopy. The only clear part. details are mostly crisp and they seemed to have learned from the trenches the panel lines of the vf-4 where these look a lot mor delicate. alto is super skinny this kit has huge parts, so no easy modding in case anyone wants to battroid or gerwalk it. the gears and wheels look a bit underdeveloped for my taste. under all that plastic and bags you will find the instructions. Only downside: no explanation how to paint the cockpit and pilot. then comes the largest decal sheet I ever had with a 1/72 kit. the decals are nice and crisp. I‘ll start building this when done with the plamax vf-1. edit: oh wait, here are the paint instructions for cockpit and pilot. I am old and blind, obviously. It's not like they have to solve a complex multidimensional physics problem, they just have to remember that people who build detailed models don't want to work with crappy stickers. Quote
Duymon Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 Plamax is the only real outlier. Decals on airplane models is pretty much standard practice Quote
electric indigo Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 The Gunpla crowd is used to stickers, but at least Bandai is nice enough to make decals sheets available as a seperate product occasionally for the more ambitious modelers. Plamax is really underselling their excellent kits in that regard. @Urashiman thank you for the appetizer pics! I'll wait for the CF kit so I won't have to paint the gazillion of white stripes on these scheme. Quote
