electric indigo Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 Ron Cobb, amazing artist & concept designer, died on Monday at the age of 83. While he never rose to the level of fame of Syd Mead or Ralph McQuarrie, his iconic contributions to 80s SF milestones can't be rated him enough. I think his comprehensive approach to design is best represented in his work for "Alien", ranging from environments to hardware & costumes right down to the corridor labels and iconography the makes the movie so captivating. http://roncobb.net/ Quote
Knight26 Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 A true master of concept art and design. Quote
F-ZeroOne Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 He designed the GunStar. Enough said. Quote
TangledThorns Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 Ron designed a lot of stuff that we bought as collectibles. RIP Quote
TehPW Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 I did not know of this man while he walked with us... but Alien still frightens me at times and i vaguely recall the GunStar... I've always wondered if a VF-2SS could pull off the same maneuver? *Salute* Quote
Kanedas Bike Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 Never fully put a name to the designs I love from The Last Starfighter, Alien and Aliens. RIP -b. Quote
sh9000 Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 I did a presentation on The Making of Alien in college and I loved his work. RIP. Quote
M'Kyuun Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 I wasn't familiar with the name, but more than familiar with a great deal of his work. How Mr. Cobb isn't as well known as Syd Mead, or Ralph McQuarrie is beyond me. He did so much to influence or pop culture. Alas, another tragic loss of a great talent. RIP, and thanks for so many wonderful designs. Quote
