Macross - Magazine for Anime and Hobby Fan ARII/IMAI booklets...now with more Bandai and Nichimo!

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I will collect the entire run of the ARII/IMAI  - Magazine for Anime and Hobby Fan Macross specific booklets here.

The numbered volumes span 1-8, however, there is one early sneak peak volume that I will include as well.

Starting with Vol. 5, the booklets also begin to cover the Orguss TV show and the various ARII/IMAI kit offerings.

Volume 8 is the final issue and it covers DYRL and some of the special re-boxed kits for that line.

I will also include the ARII/IMAI promo posters from the SDFM era at the end and any other freebies and promo items from IMAI/ARII.

For the most part, each volume contains lineart for the mecha, background story for the show, dioramas built with the ARII/IMAI Macross line of kits, customs, how-to's, and even photos of special contest kit builds and displays.  Enjoy!

The booklet announces the October release of the TV show.....like what you see? ARII/IMAI has Macross kits for you to buy!

...And with that, I would assume hobbyists and anime fans back in 1982 would have been plenty intrigued and excited to see what Macross was all about.....I know I would have been!

The remaining 8 volumes of the Magazine for Anime and Hobby Fan would be of the same size and would be about 20 or so pages long....all filled with awesome art, model kits, and info on all of your favorite Macross mecha and characters.....

Still one of my favorites.

Although, I do prefer the color scheme Yamato came produced.

It's a shame they went out of business.  Given just a little more time they probably would have finished up the entire SDFM TV lineup.

Did you ever finish up your "airframe" custom of the VF-X?  Did you ever attempt a VEFR-1?

Tell me about it. They really were the closest to completing the line.

VF-X Frame not done yet. I have been working on more ideas for this including full panels made from soft drink containers. Plus there is a lot of details that I am still deciphering from the x-ray VF views. Too many contradictions and I want to create an almost seemed blend of all sources available.

VEFR-1 is still on list and have a few parts that require recasting to get started. But for the most part this one should be pretty simple to accomplish. I just want to complete my other customs first.

But they are coming.

That will be epic when completed...are you still going for VF-1X "as seen on TV" or more like the ARII poster?

Thanks.

I am trying to blend certain aspects of Perfect Memory, the VF-1S Strike Valkyrie X-Ray póster from the Gold Book, and  this poster. There are a few niuances that work well with the Yamato platform I am working with. Plus this custom will retain full transform abilities to showcase eaves detail.

One detail I did go out on a whim was to creat the Master File leg engine and it’s actually installed in each leg. Look closer, hard to see but it’s there.

Yes, I have followed the progress...for a while now! LOL

But as they say...you can't rush art!

I wonder if the "Roy Focker Special" designation was originally created as an IMAI/ARII marketing device for their VF-1S Focker kits.....the original Takatoku toys don't seem to use it...and I think the Nichimo kits just refer to it as "Special" but not as "Roy Focker Special".....I do not think Hasegawa uses it either....

Does Bandai now actually have some sort of exclusive rights to the term "Roy Focker Special"?

- THANKS A MIILION -  JV Macross for posting all of these up here!!! It's great to see all these promos we mostly never got in the U.S.

It's funny to see how people were already taking the Macross kits and modding them to improve them.

It's so sad that Imai folded. They had SO MANY AWESOME KITS!!! Many a kid (and adult) has spent time drooling over them hoping to get that one kit.

No Imai - I will not get sucked into buying your models! Oh wait, I'm 35+ years too late! - MT

@jvmacross I really enjoyed looking through all of the images you posted. Thanks a lot!

How would you rate these on difficulty to obtain? I'd love to collect all of these.

@MechTech I was cracking up about "No Imai..."

Great stuff as always, JVM. Thanks for taking the time to document and share all of these booklets! I love and adore all of the wonderful Toshio Suzuki artwork which adorned many of the IMAI and ARII boxes.

I used to collect the ARII 1/100 kit line, and it's interesting to note that what is labeled as a VF-1C head in the lineart in booklet #0 is what ARII actually molded and supplied in their early VF-1D fighter mode and two-mode kits, and bears a strong resemblance to Kawamori's pre-production VF-1D head. Not so surprising, that, but it is somewhat interesting to see it labeled as a "C" variant here!

I posted a scan of the weird Orguss/VF-1S hybrid from Orguss booklet #7 here about 15 years ago and people totally freaked ;) So much weird and wonderful stuff from the period in these books.
