Shinkon Gattai Godannar!! ( 神魂åˆä½“ゴーダンナーï¼ï¼ )

OLM/AIC/AT-X/TAKI Corporation, 2003-2004

ADV Films, 2005

Directed by Yasushi Nagaoka (Lost Chapter of the Stars - Birth)

Running Time: 25 minutes per episode

Rated TV-MA for graphic violence, gratuitous T&A, HLA and S&M.

Five years ago, while battling an alien force known as the "Mimesis," Dannar pilot Go Saruwatari first met Anna Aoi. Today, on the day of their wedding, the ceremony is interrupted when the Mimesis strike again. As Go struggles in his battle against the alien threat, Anna stumbles upon a top secret robot known as the "Neo-Okusaer" and uses it as a last-resort to save her fiancee. At that moment, Dannar and Neo-Okusaer merge to become the mighty robot "Godannar."

Story: D+

What's with these giant robot titles going ecchi? You got bra & panty shots left and right, and the jiggly-counter going off the scale. As if Choujuushin Gravion wasn't bad enough. Godannar even adds the lovers' quarrel subplot. Where's the damn character development? I hope this whole mess gets straightened up on the next episode.

Animation: B-

As mentioned earlier, the whole concept of Godannar is all T&A in an attempt to outdo Gravion. Takahiro Kimura's (King of Braves GaoGaiGar, Betterman) are okay, but Tsukasa Kotobuki's (Saber Marionette J/J Again/J to X) mecha designs are uninspiring and unoriginal. And I still wish AIC hadn't gone all-digital on their animation.

Wait a minute - OLM did this, too? After receiving acclaim for Steel Angel Kurumi and Figure 17, why would they stoop down to this level?

Soundtrack: C

If you're a fan of old-school anime, you will notice that Godannar's soundtrack incorporates recycled BGM from Dangaioh, another AIC title. At least there are some decent songs by veteran singers Akira Kushida (Sentou Mecha Xabungle, Kinnikuman), Mitsuko Horie and Ichiro Mizuki (Mazinger Z and nearly every Super Robot theme you can think of). Hopefully, the rest of the series will at least have original music.

Cast

Shinkon Gattai Godannar features Takayuki Kondo (Mach Alert in Transformers Car Robots) as Go, Mai Nakahara (Miina in Onegai Twins, Eina in Gravion) as Anna, Yumi Kakazu (Dita in Vandread, Renais in GaoGaiGar Final) as Shizuru, Aya Hisakawa (Haruka in RahXephon, Skuld in Ah! My Goddess) as Mira, Kaori Shimizu (Serial Experiments Lain) as Lu, Akeno Watanabe (Witch Hunter Robin) as Konami, Nobuyuki Hiyama (Shiro in Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team) as Tetsuya, Mamiko Noto (The World of Narue, Shinji in Full Metal Panic!) as Momoko, Junko Minagawa (Joshua in Chrno Crusade) as Shinobu, Taro Yamaguchi (Boma in Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex) as Kagemaru, and Takako Honda (Pandy in Dead Leaves) as Kiriko.

DVD Extras

Not interested in renting the R1 release.

The Bottom Line

Are you a hardcore robot anime fan? If so, Godannar's not for you, unless you're also into ecchi.

A7, I am a hardcore robot anime fan but I cannot stand this "doesn't worth my time" show.

Story = C-

I only have very little idea of what happened after watching the whole thing and there is no character development at all.

Robot Design = D

Why robot has huge breast? Geez...

Gravion robot is way better.

Character Design = C

Too much fan service in a robot anime is no good at all.

Hmmm, I would have to agree there. But there're bits that I've enjoyed, yet also bits that annoyed me. The show hangs on the fence. So far it's... passable. The fanservice, I agree, is utterly useless junk. =/

Hmm, I was actually thinking of picking this up just because I love giant robots & fanservice equally.... :)

I loved this series. It was pure satire and spoofed other mecha shows (I think some of you took it too serious). I thought the opening title had a good retro feel. As for the T&A, it wasn't as good as Aika (the camera shots were increadible on that show to get so much pantsu on screen) but it cracked me up every time it saw it.

It's because the super robot show is no longer a viable genre. Kids these days want shounen fighting, so the super robot shows that do get made are for adults who grew up with them.

Why is that godannar head so similar to the fire valk one? :p

LOL! I didn't think about that. Now you've given Agent ONE a reason to hate this anime.

As a matter of fact, didn't Keith just buy the DVD box? Now I see the connection...

Speaking of Jiggly counters did any of you ever see Burn up excess? There was a feature on the DVD that actually counted the jiggles for you while you watched the Anime! LOL>

I think this is actually a good series. The fanservice is not necessary for the most part. But there are some funny moments and the action is very good for a TV series. For an action robot show, it actually has pretty good story, mainly focusing on the tension of the love triangle, and also a lot of nods to old shows. I think it deserves a much higher score, as the production quality is quite high and its very entertaining for the 1st season I've seen so far. And having a recent cool gokin toy does help. :p

Just finished the final volume of the Godannar DVDs, and a great ending with tons of action nonetheless. Haven't actually seen a giant robot TV series with a very satisfying ending for a while, while the action kept me on the edge of the chair. Just sucks that ADV being a cheapskate giving you only 3 episodes on the last 3 volumes, when they lure you in with 5 episodes on volume 1. HATE THAT!!! This could have been a 6 disc collection instead of 7. But they did a good job on the extras, jacket design and all.

As a whole, the series has a lot of fanservice for sure, but good that they are all just 'tongue in cheek' kind of sexy comic relief, or some brief nudity in some occasions. A bit naughty in showing some skin, but nothing dirty or gratutious that makes it feel like porn. Its a TV series on air in Japan afterall. Still not everyone's cup of tea. But in terms of drama & robot action, its almost as hotblood as GaoGaiGar Final's level...meaning really good. Art is very consistent in all episodes, and high quality animation for a TV show. Watching this show, while having my Max gokin displayed right on top of my DVD play sure is a blast!

mpchi,

Yeah A7 pre-judged the show fairly badly, but then again post NGE stuff gets unreasonablity set-up on a higher level.

Most Robot anime is stupid fun action anyways and should be viewed as such.

I really loved the ending too, I wasn't expecting anywhere near that much closure, so I was very pleasantly surprised.
