My unprecedented burst of productivity is now focused on the Quincy Rowe, where I'm compelled to use pink primer. 😋

Not being sexist or anything...  Grey primer just isn't practical on grey resin. 😉

Almost looks like a 3D rendering, because auf the mirror surface.

Thanks, but I'm not so sure myself... 🤔

As usual, I've been carefully analyzing the anime to confirm the color scheme, and some of the animators interpreted the model sheet line art quite differently from how Moscato did; the "face," in particular.

closeontheface.png.d6bec383ff0e49c66ad26abe70ba7b28.png

I don't see an oblong sphere protruding from the carapace, but rather an oval mask inset into it.

clearlyopenontop.png.46b876877667ca75faf57eb4166f9a4e.png

Also, the conical section on top isn't (usually) depicted as a closed triangle, but an open vertical channel that runs all the way down to the antennae...

openbehindthefin.png.2bc3e19d965b8b57668989354fb9870a.png

opentriangleontop.png.0678b1c3c2521775ac55ee7fb569a172.png

Thus, I carved a similar channel into the "triangle" on top, and hollowed out enough space to mount the face inside the carapace.

modifiedface.jpg.68e33cf9eba3e099f8d8c284c0296d2a.jpg

This also allows a fair degree of articulation, allowing the eye to move up and down, and side-to-side.

lookingdown.jpg.53f1ff9953cd12e94f1c3235f0b531bb.jpg

lookingleft.jpg.2333310d79c9cea6e9ce8e6d9dad5b1c.jpg

lookingdownon.jpg.aabb1bd1364269f462ba1b0c91332596.jpg

Finally, the hands are usually depicted bent into a fist, rather than the open hands Moscato provided.  Even the iconic line art pose (and all derivative Imai and Bandai packaging art) show the left hand curled into a fist...

queadluun-raucolorguides.jpg.7905642321245140383b88567a3d59cf.jpg

...so I went to the hardware store to acquire some springs of the appropriate diameter.

baresprings.jpg.fa2823ea8f72de0e5a8ac819ced6c287.jpg

It looked a little better once I coated the springs in cemedine.

primedfist.jpg.10c455429defd9ab5f64815306daa461.jpg

With these modifications made, the Quincy Rowe is starting to look more familiar.

So that channel may not go back all the way. The old Imai kit didn’t have it go back at all, but I think they made a mistake since looking head on at just artwork gives it a different look, but you can see it go back if you really pay attention to the art.I thought I’d compare it to the movie edition from hasegawa and on that it comes back, but not all the wayIMG_2283.png.e34f8e4d76f155577673cfd8dae32ce9.pngIMG_2282.png.a3bf4710a328ab74da0b75afb385c496.pngthen this one of the tv version from the back of the head appears to be a similar thing where the channel may not go all the way back. I couldn’t find another rear picture to show it better from the series on a quick searchIMG_2284.jpeg.2fa4d5d9f1265538327ce8fcdc1af0c6.jpeg

Found an overhead picture from the line art and it has a similar design to the groove on the movie version kitIMG_2285.jpeg.ee13368658aca2e1367568ede49aa6d9.jpegIMG_2282.png.b1fe2cb931243f02439c2a0cce9a1df7.pngso as far as I can find, it looks as if the channel goes back a little and then there’s a stop and a triangular cut by the antenna side rather than at the front

I'm using a variety of weathering techniques for the armor (drybrushing, chipping, distressing the labels), and I've masked off and painted each panel separately, to allow for slight variances in color tone and condition.  I'm quite happy with the exterior detailing so far:

I'm really not sure what to do with the interior, however.  The animation is frustratingly inconsistent concerning the color scheme.

That's some excellent detective work, sir.  You've proven Imai was wrong, Moscato was wrong, and I was wrong, too.

Hasegawa for the win! :hi:

Incidentally, did you know an eBay seller is using your 1:72 Moscato Hobby SDFM Q-Rau image to sell his 1:144 Yellow Submarine DYRL Q-Rau kit?

For that interior, you may want to go with a medium gray. The interior in the pinkish one seems to be with a nice super bright day and the darker ones are either in space or in a dark hangar bay. You could add a little purple to give the color a little more of a pop and bit closer to the kit up color, but it’s definitely hard to figure out.

Well, the interior detailing will have to wait.  The annual model exhibition is this weekend, and the Q-Rau will be on display with all my other Moscato kits.

I'm not finished yet, guys!  I still have the interior to detail, and the figure needs to be painted, too...

In fact, I've added swivels at the elbows, alternate hands and... legs. 🤓

I'm not too keen on the pose, though. 🤔
