I agree Misa's pose is better, because it's based on the key art. But you gotta give Hikaru some love too. Feel free to give pose examples and advice on my page. Quote
MacrossJunkie Posted October 30, 2022 Posted October 30, 2022 Ah, dangit... I gave in and decided to get the premium finish version from HLJ. It was one of two remaining in their inventory. My eyesight isn't as good as it used to be and I don't want to strain them while cutting stickers or decals to apply on the regular one I have. Not sure what I'll do with the regular one. Either sell it, give it to a friend, or repaint it with a different scheme. I've already panel lined it, so selling is probably out. Quote

Oof, I would have bought it panel lined if I hadn't just bought one 20 days ago. How much were you looking at letting it go for? Quote
David Hingtgen Posted November 3, 2022 Posted November 3, 2022 A small preview/update. The panel lines are basically done, a few spots need redoing/tweaking. Lines are not quite as "crisp" as I'd like, but I'd rather have too soft than too stark. Quote

Mommar Posted November 4, 2022 Posted November 4, 2022 Was suggesting this. I don't like the M3 version at all. Quote
David Hingtgen Posted November 5, 2022 Posted November 5, 2022 M3 has a mix of amazing schemes (VF-11) and terrible ones (VF-4). Quote

Lolicon Posted November 12, 2022 Posted November 12, 2022 Man those look so good. Ever consider doing proper 1/48 figures for the DX line? I think the pilot figures are the biggest eyesores and just make the entire scale look wonky. Quote

Sorry I don't have 1/48 in my collection, only 1/72 and 1/60. Too big for me. Even in my 1/60s, it's not one size fits all. For example, there is more leg room in the Arcadia VF-4 than the YF-19 and VF-1. Edited November 12, 2022 by arbit Quote
David Hingtgen Posted November 18, 2022 Posted November 18, 2022 Hmmmn----too much black? Matching the tailfins closer might have looked better but would be difficult to paint. Quote

David Hingtgen Posted November 21, 2022 Posted November 21, 2022 I would have liked to paint the fin's hinge, but it was impossible to remove the pin, and it'd be almost impossible to match the dark copper color anyways, so I left it as-is. Quote
Chronocidal Posted November 21, 2022 Posted November 21, 2022 Is that actually a pinned hinge, or something just snapped in? I remember some part of the leg around there being prone to pop out. Quote
David Hingtgen Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 The whole fin+hinge comes out easily (even accidently), but the hinge itself (coppery-plastic) is pinned to the fin (molded in off-white), and my efforts to remove the pin to remove the coppery-hinge so as to have access to the part of the hinge molded to the fin (the whitish part) were unsuccessful. And I didn't want to try to hand-paint the area, I wanted "lacquer spray or nothing" in an area subject to wear, and that pretty much meant spraying black or nothing. So I went with "nothing". Quote
Lolicon Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 Well, having that obvious hinge will make it fit in nicely next to any DX VF-1. Quote

David Hingtgen Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 I may try basic bronze acrylic just to see how it looks, for a minimal-effort test. Quote

David Hingtgen Posted November 27, 2022 Posted November 27, 2022 Vallejo "tin" is actually very close to "VF-4 dark copper/bronze" so I'm applying that to the hinges. I "feel good" about the hinge-paint surviving transformation, but we'll see. (I was originally going to use "hammered copper" and try to darken it, but the tin color looked so close in the hobby shop that I bought it) Quote

David Hingtgen Posted November 29, 2022 Posted November 29, 2022 Not a perfect match but quite close when dried. I ended up painting the coppery-plastic part of the hinge too. It's a good enough match I may start painting other "coppery plastic" bits, too. Quote

Great job, particularly considering how much harder it is to match metallics, imo. Quote

I wouldn't have known you had painted it if I didn't already know to look for it. Looking at it now, it's a bit surprising Arcadia left an obvious unpainted hinge like that. That's such a Bandai thing to do *coughDXVF-1cough* Quote

David Hingtgen Posted November 29, 2022 Posted November 29, 2022 If anyone wants to paint the bare white hinges on their own VF-4, it's straight Vallejo 72.060 "Tinny Tin". (plus a lot of thinner and flow aid----it's very thick right out of the bottle). Quote
