So, they may have actually delivered on this last ep.

Building on stuff that happened in the actual show, rather than relying on folks knowing the original comic stories.

The question is whether they’ll actually stick with what happened.

Spoiler

Got shades of the Orchis massacre with this ep.  And nice to see Gambit go out like a boss.

But again, let’s see if the deaths actually stick.

This episode was one that’s tough to talk about without a spoiler tag

Spoiler

A bit heavy on the awkward drama and this show seems to really like dancy scenes a bit too much. Other than that the action was pretty top notch and it’s nice to see the Sentinels as an actual major threat rather than the easy kills that they’ve been in the past. Personally I’m hoping that Gambit pulls through since he was my favorite of that early 90’s team. But that definitely was a badass way to handle things and Awsome final possible words “The name’s Gambit mon ami…Remember it”

Well after a rewatch, since overall it was still a pretty good episode compared to the last one

Spoiler

Cable was there for a reason. I have a feeling that there is probably gonna be some time travel shenanigans to change what happened. I doubt he was there just to say hi to mommy

I'm torn. Either Gambit is resurrected, which would kill the stakes, or he would stay dead, which stinks. I appreciate that the end of this episode had me fully engaged.

I know what you mean

Spoiler

He’s my favorite of that era of X-Men and honestly is my favorite on the show. I don’t like Wolverine much in the 97 series since he always sounds like he needs a nap, so I guess Cyclops would be my favorite character now. If things got reversed by Cable I’d definitely be happy to get Gambit back, but also a little disappointed that all that destruction could just be wiped away by a gimmick.

Seeing Gladiator serving Deathbird got me interested right away since last we saw Deathbird, her coup to take the throne from Lilandra failed.

EDIT: This takes me back to the height of Game of Thrones, but first thing I see when I go to YouTube was a video with a spoiler for today's episode in the title. 🤦‍♂️

It’s best to avoid any social media with these shows like this until you’re caught up. It’s unfortunate that people will try and spoil things in the teaser box making it tougher to avoid

Finished the most recent episode of X-Men 97 and it was an odd mix of good animation, meh animation, good action and an bunch of cringy moments.

Spoiler

At least they finally got back to showing the Professor. I still think it’s weird that there’s a guy in jail for his murder and a will for a guy that everyone knew was still alive. The whole classroom thing was the silliest bit of cringe though. Do those people even understand the whole Apple thing.

Storm got her powers back in an odd fight against tight spaces and if anyone remembers her from the old episodes, she doesn’t like boxes. Oddly her nightmare was animated really well. But on another bit of odd cringe she somehow gained the power to make a new costume in mid air, and change her hairdo. So now her powers allow her to control weather, be a hairdresser and tailor all at once. I kinda get the feeling that the animators really liked Sailor Moon. At least Storm might not be afraid of tight spaces anymore, because that was an annoying weakness.

I enjoyed episode 6.

There really wasn’t enough Nightcrawler in an episode where he was shown so well in the title. He’s been way underused in the show ever since the old episodes. Although he had good moments in the Pryde of the X-Men pilot episode thing

On a comics forum, I was instructed that Storm's magical background has comics precedence. That's probably not enough for me to justify a magical girl transformation + Saiyan hair growth, but I thought it looked cool. I was also reminded that Storm transformed her civilian clothes into her Jim Lee costume in the original show's pilot, so at least there's some consistency. But anyway, seeing David Cockrum's Storm design on screen is a big win IMO, regardless if it makes sense.

I didn't really care as much for the Shi'ar plot. As I mentioned earlier, Deathbird failed in her coup attempt against Lilandra, and I think the show's continuity would be better if there were more apparent consequences for her treason. I like that you pointed out that someone's been jailed for "murdering" Xavier even though every X-Man knew he was recovering in outer space. If you've never seen the classic Fox Kids show, this would be pretty jarring.

I like Superman and a lot of Superman pastiches, so I thought Gladiator was pretty awesome in this episode.

Spoiler

As far as our guy in jail for “MURDER” , they showed him in the first episode of 97. And in the last episode of the original series everyone saw Xavier go to space. Even Morph pretended to be Xavier in a television broadcast to try and make it appear that he was completely fine and dandy. Obviously the shows are connected, it’s just a weird thing that everyone pretended that he was dead and accepted a will from Xavier as well.
It probably wouldn’t have bugged me if I hadn’t watched the old episodes right before starting the new ones, because I’d forgotten a lot of the show over the decades

So, the latest ep, the plotting was a little weird to follow:

Spoiler

Rogue touches Gyrich to discover what exactly?  Main X-Men get the call from Trask, but decide to make a detour to pick up Rogue first?

And yes, they’re still playing loose with the continuity from the old series.  Jean already read Cable’s mind during an old ep and discovered Cable’s ties to hers and Scott’s (then) future.  So, a minor retcon there.

And where the hell is Storm?

Storm’s on a ranch gettin busy. Although after finding out things were a mess she should have shown up

and they really are doing some odd things with the continuity since as I’ve said before Morph pretended to be Xavavier in good health on tv so everyone around the world would think he was fine. As far as Jean knowing Cable was Cyclops’s son, I can’t remember if that had happened before or after she was replaced by the Goblin Queen. I know it happened, just can’t remember exactly when.

Overall was a pretty good episode Rogue showing off a bit was fun and definitely looked better than her action scenes in the original episodes. Wolverine still has a weird sounding voice in these episodes. But at least there’s more Nightcrawler, just too bad they had to kill off a member of the team to add him in

I honestly squealed a little bit when Cable showed up at the end of episode 7. 😇

And “ON ME”

Thank Stan Lee. At the end of X-Men #1 (1963), Professor X says,

Quote

Well done, students! You have justified all our long hours of training...All our sacrifices...All our dreams! And now return to me, my X-Men!

But Blame Grant Morrison for shortening it and making it a thing. Starting in 2001, it became the infamous rally phrase for the X-Men. But really, blame Jonathan Hickman. Starting in 2019, for inserting it. Every. Chance. He. Could.

I remember seeing reprints of the long speech, but I really only read from the early 80’s to the early 90’s. After they lost all their talent most of the people I knew just considered it fan fiction. I know it picked back up a little later on , but nothing like it once was. Comics altogether kinda dipped in popularity around the mid to late 90’s and it’s a real rarity to meet someone that actually keeps up with them.

Excellent episode 8.  If this comes out on blu-ray then I'll buy it.

Just finished the last of the 97 episodes. Overall it’s not a bad show and has some great moments. Definitely the best marvel animated series I’ve seen. It does have some super cringy moments here and there, but I’m still looking forward to the upcoming X-Men 98.

one of the things I’m a bit on the fence with

Spoiler

Magneto isn’t dead, and it was pretty easy to guess what he was gonna do, but it makes you wonder why he never tried it before. That being said it was way more entertaining than anything he’s ever done in a movie or show before
Also, I guess everything electronic is toast worldwide, so next time we see forge he’s gonna just be floppin around until he finds his old crutch. I guess everything mostly will be in a temporary dark age. Brings certain questions about characters like cable as well. Is there no more techno organic virus and is his time thingy toast.

Sunspot’s parents seemed pretty quick to hand over their kid to some random weirdo’s that were flying around blowing stuff up.

and one thing I didn’t like is that it’s one thing to have one goofy set of rules for pseudo science gimmicks like time travel, but then to add the other set of rules to it was just a bit silly

As far as things I liked

Spoiler

Wolverine finally killed people with his lil stabbies. The overall action was good for the most part and we finally get some good action with Nightcrawler. Some of those people might just wake up afterwards and find their limbs missing after that fight if they return to normal after the emp burst

Cable's body tech is way beyond affected by EMP. It's a hybrid techno-organic from way far forward in the future.  Insofar as I can remember from my X-Force days, Magneto wasn't able to do much to directly attack him, so indirect attacks in the atmosphere wouldn't slow him down a bit. Also, his time travel tech isn't something he carries with him but is instead based on the Graymalkin space station in orbit around Earth. (At least, that's how it used to be back in the 90's.) I honestly truly hate how "micronized" time travel tech has become to the point that it's just carried around and can be used any old time by certain characters. One of the reasons I liked Bishop was that he was stranded and couldn't get back to his own time. And Cable, while possessing the tech, had to be *extremely* selective about how he traveled back and forth because of the ever-changing nature of the timestream. The original Cable books went so far as to explain that a chrono-physician had to "plot" the right course in the timestream so that the traveler wouldn't wind up disintegrated, and even doing so meant that you couldn't just jump anywhen you wanted.

I think they only showed Graymalkin once in the older episodes and it didn’t seem like as much a time travel device the way it was depicted, more of a smart spaceship. And As far as the series bishop, he just goes back and forth whenever he screwed up. And as far as cables tech in the series, it may have come from the future, but so did some of the tech that was used in the sentinel peeps.

either way time travel stuff is too much of a gimmick and gets way overused in the show, but I’m also not a fan of rewriting rules for things.

I knew I heard Bastion’s voice from somewhere else!

He’s the same voice actor for Hector from Netflix Castlevania.

Clearly, the X-Men need to rethink their strategy and find a gothic, loli honeypot to take him down. 😉

Spider-Man '98 next please.

Please find a way to bring back Christopher Daniel Barnes. One of the few disappointing elements of the show is the voice mismatch between this and the original show.
