Evangelion, the legendary series that shocked the world, returns to Netflix! The 26 episode series that started it all, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and the two feature films The End of Evangelion & Evangelion: Death (True)2, will stream exclusively on Netflix from Spring 2019!

While I have the whole series & movies on DVD, this is still awesome on Netflix's part for those who have yet to ever see this series.

While Shinji can annoy the hell out of you at times, still an amazing anime!

Where does Death fall into line with You Are (Not) Alone and the other reboot movies?

my understanding is End of Evangelion and Death kind of sort of replace the final 2 episodes of the series. Evangelion replaced Pokemon's slot lol, and was not sold to the network as the show it really was. after the episode where Unit 01 goes feral and eats the Angel, the budget was slashed - just look at how many scenes are static panning shots with voiceovers in the episodes after.

later on with it's massive popularity, creator Hideaki Anno got more funding and made a "proper" ending to the series: End of Evangelion and Death. the reboot movies came much later, and might even be a continuation? hopefully 4.0, due in 2020, will wrap things up well.

What are they gonna do about the that first true meeting of Shinji and rei? I can already feel the religious police freaking out in the US...

Throw an MA rating on it and it's the parent's fault for not knowing what their kids are watching, there are far worse hits against religion in that series.

It’s included besides theoriginal 26 episodes. Both The End and Death. I copied the description which I posted above from their YouTube post.

Lemme try again: I have Death on DVD, what’s with this Death (True)2?

From Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon_Genesis_Evangelion:_Death_%26_Rebirth

Quote

Evangelion: Death(True) screened on January 2, 1998 on the Japanese satellite TV channel WOWOW; this version of Evangelion: Death was personally re-edited by Masayuki, removing much of the new footage from episodes 21–24.

Another version titled Revival of Evangelion was released on March 8, 1998 and is a unification of the movies Death(True)2 (a further edit of Death(true), with a few removed shots edited back in) and The End of Evangelion. It is considered the final form of the Evangelion movies, which had been released in several forms prior to Revival. The two were released on the ninth and tenth discs of the Renewal of Evangelion box set with the labels of Revival of Evangelion and Evangelion – The Feature Film. Death(true)2 is also the version released in the west.

Very excited to re-watch this series. I have the DVDs but the blu rays were never available in the states. And once the rebuild movies were made that was all they were making. The first time I watched the series was on rented DVDs from Netflix. When Netflix was just a DVD rental service, and now the circle continues with re-watching the series streaming HD.

Thanks technoblue. Christ, people think Lucas’ reimagining of his earlier stuff is troublesome...

The TV series is integral. EOE merely explores the same themes and Shinji's personal revelation from a different (and more convoluted) perspective. If anything, I think the TV ending is perfect just as it is.

I still haven't watched the whole series. I tried again recently and once again stopped at episode 3. Perhaps I should be watching it in Japanese.

Here's hoping this is a prelude to Netflix financing an animated adaptation to one of those Evangelion alterniverse manga titles where Shinji actually grows a pair and stops being an unlikeable little squit.

Looks like another series I never got around to watching is finally going to be watched! Looking forward to it.

A great bit of news but I'd much rather have had an announcement for a Western BD release.

Does anyone know if they're using the ADV dub or are they doing they doing a new one?

The first NGE movie, titled "NGE: Death and Rebirth," consisted of two parts. "Death" was a ~1-hour long recap of the series (ie a compilation film), including newly-animated footage (some of which I believe was added back into re-releases of the series proper; they show up in the Platinum Collection "Director's Cut" episodes). "Rebirth" was the first ~30 minutes of what would become End of Evangelion, which at the time had not completed animation. "Rebirth" ends with the arrival of the Mass Production Eva Units.

"Death" therefore has no direct correlation to the Rebuild movies, which are a pseudo-sequel/reboot of the franchise.

To expand on what @technoblue said, there are three versions of "Death":

1 - "NGE: Death and Rebirth," the compilation movie plus "Rebirth"

2 - "Evangelion: Death (True)," the same compilation movie with the newly-animated footage removed

3 - "Revival of Evangelion," the same compilation movie with most of the newly-animated footage added back in plus "End of Evangelion" (ie the same concept as NGE: Death and Rebirth, but replacing Rebirth with EoE)

You mean the one where they discard all pretenses of being a genre deconstruction and just make it yet another giant robot harem anime? I mean, they're assuredly more upbeat at the very least, but that's not at all what Evangelion is known for.

Did you read the manga by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, by chance? That's probably as upbeat a Shinji as I would have liked until the Rebuild movies, and even then that Shinji is way more generically shounen (up 'til 3.0, anyway) than the more... "mellowly" upbeat Shinji of the manga. I quite liked Manga Shinji.

Manga was very good, Shinji’s not so much of a milquetoast and actually has moments of bravery and decisiveness. I just wish it hadn’t taken 20+ years to finish.

A pretense is all it ever was... Neon Genesis Evangelion was a typical 90's monster-of-the-week robot anime that gets mistaken for deep because its creator couldn't keep his contempt for his audience out of his work anymore.  Shinji Ikari isn't written to be a pathetic loser for the sake of some obscure psychological point.  He's an audience surrogate viewed through the lens of Hideaki Anno's disgust with otaku culture.  "This Loser is You", as TVTropes would put it.  It's less a deliberate deconstruction and more Anno taking every opportunity that he could to flip the otaku the bird as viscerally as possible without totally derailing an otherwise fairly typical giant robot series.  It's just Anno's bad luck that his stinging rebuke of all things otaku not only went almost totally unheeded, but became a poster child for otaku-ness itself.  Even his less subtle efforts to communicate his contempt like End of Evangelion didn't get the point across to most of his audience.

(I'll admit I admire Anno for what he did with End of Evangelion... it was simultaneously the most breathtakingly petty and the most exquisitely beautiful revenge I've ever seen an artist enact upon his critics.  He turned "rocks fall, everyone dies" into an 85 minute opus in the key of F-YOU dedicated to everyone with the temerity to tell him how to do his job.)

TBH, I was thinking more of one of the more comedy-focused manga titles based on the parallel world in the last episode.

Large Ham Gendo is kind of where I'm at, just for the reactions it gets from the more assertive Shinji.

Sadamoto's manga is definitely worlds better than the TV anime though.  There's actual character development!

I actually have the manga as my personal reference EVA. The ending was excellent. Yeah, it took too long to finish, but let's face it, mangaka are not known for their speed.

And based on what Tiffany Grant, Asuka’s English VA; and Amanda Winn Lee, Rei’s; posted on social media immediately after this announcement, the old English voice cast is not returning and was apparently never in the running to do so.

I hadn't even realized this was a new dub. I just assumed they were adding the old series that aired on Cartoon Network (I think) years ago to their streaming library, as-is.

I'm not so sure its the US specifically, but the usual argument is dubs pull in a larger potential market share as people don't like reading (or, fairly, have trouble reading and watching at the same time).

Though I've always admired "Evangelion" for the way it shook things up a bit (mecha shows were in a bit of a rut at the time, though having said that I've also never quite forgiven it for what it did to mecha pilots either), its never been a personal favourite of mine. It also seemed a bit less clever once I finally got to see some of its inspirations, like "Ideon" and "Dunbine".

Wow... talk about "Never Trust a Trailer". :D

Watching this, you'd expect Neon Genesis Evangelion to be a fast-paced mecha/action series... not the slow, depressing, character-focused deconstruction of standard mecha anime tropes filtered through the experiences of mecha anime's most pathetically passive protagonist: a young boy with more daddy issues than a football stadium full of porn stars.  I'd expect most people watching it will already know full well what they're getting into, but anyone who doesn't is going to be feeling a little bit lied-to when they discover the series is much more about Shinji being depressed than giant robots fighting monsters.

Why do people in the US prefer dubbed anime?

I know a lot of people who won’t watch an anime unless it’s dubbed because it’s to difficult to read the subtitles and watch what’s on screen and process the story.
