Nyankodevice Posted November 4, 2017 Posted November 4, 2017 i might aswell make this an actual thread... i have have started my very first Diorama, and its is the SDF-1 situated on macross island, its will be in scale 1/8000. the SDF-1 model im using in the diorama is a Bandai 1/8000 storm attacker kit, i converted into Cruiser mode, i had to remodel some of the parts since they where not to scale or was simply the wrong shape, changes made to parts where: Main cannon (gave it more bulk and more details) Main Cannon connector (changed shape completely) bridge boom (made from scratch) bridge (needed separation and details) main thrusters (looked to much like feet, changed shape and added details) the diorama rough sketch is pretty much done, need more roads though. Xigfrid Posted November 4, 2017 Posted November 4, 2017 That's an amazing idea! Where will you display it? I would love one protected under a plexi-glassĀ as a low table in the lounge Quote
electric indigo Posted November 4, 2017 Posted November 4, 2017 It would already look cool if you hang it at a wall in it's current state. Quote
derex3592 Posted November 4, 2017 Posted November 4, 2017 I am totally in love with this project!!! Can't wait to see it complete!!! Quote

tekering Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Awesome project. Ā Need reference images? Ā Quote
jardann Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 Very Cool! Looks like you're off to a great start! That must be a pretty good-sized diorama. What are the full dimensions? Quote

Nyankodevice Posted November 8, 2017 Author Posted November 8, 2017 that looks great and Ā is "doable" at that scale 1/4000.... Ā however it doesn't look like SDFM they only have 9 - 10 years to build both the city, military base and rebuild the ship which they first need to study, also in the study phase there probably weren't that many civilians to build a city, since the site probably was off limits... also the un -Ā antiĀ un wars took some time... so in the end there probably weren't that many buildings above 3 - 5Ā storysĀ i assume most, military personnel lived on the base... You've got your work cut out for you, sir. Ā Quote

Ā The entire scientific and industrial might of the UN was focused on this project, and the defence thereof.Ā 9 years and change for a city like that considering the globalĀ devastation wreaked when Macross made planetfallĀ isn't TOO crazy... Tidal waves and droughts would mean alot of ppl willing to move and work for food, shelter and safety.Ā And the City was so big that despite theĀ Interstellar war breaking out,Ā 40,000 civilians and change survived beingĀ accidentallyĀ spaced by the SDF-1's emergency fold... Going by the screen grabs that's a city of a coupleĀ Million... Quote
electric indigo Posted November 10, 2017 Posted November 10, 2017 The concept art IMO leaves it more open if these structures are metropolitan high-rises. The production art also doesn't feel like a city build around the spaceship, more like the ship being superimposed on generic city imagery. So which way to take for a 3D representation? Can anybody decipher the annotation in the sketch? Ā Quote
Nyankodevice Posted November 10, 2017 Author Posted November 10, 2017 All of the above reasons are also valid..Ā But are we forgetting that there were two animation studios working apart, one of which weren't so particular when it came to scale of various things... Just some thoughts Quote

I really want aĀ SLA printer and may do it before the end of the year if I can get this to work (and time to play). Doing a Ataria island was an idea I had to start with to test out for Macross modelling purposes after I got things up, running and working well. I was thinking of doing one for my Hase 1/4000 model and if I was balsey enough, do one for the 1/3000 Arcadia/Yamato version...Decisions, decisions, decisions. The problem of course is the size of the diorama Yours is coming along very well! Look forward to watching your progress. Quote

Hi Abit, that was not mine. I am assuming that is how it was done due to the detail. It could be done with plastic sheet as well with the right amount of precision and patience. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Quote
