So is Walkure supposed to be pronounced like Valkyrie, vALLk-your-ie, vALLk-your, or WALK-your-ie?

Just curious why the change of spelling or the possible Germanic influence.

Ah, tricky. The "a" in Walküre is pronounced like in "pass", and the ending "e" like the "ea" in "head". For the umlaut-u (ü), there's no equivalent that I know.

But you can have it read to you by google translate, the pronunciation is spot on.

If you're wondering how the specific pronunciation in-show, it's

ワルキューレ

or "wa-ru-kyuu-re" or "war-cue-ray".

Fixed. ;)

Thanks guys! Is there a lot of Germanic influence in the show? I wonder what made Kawamori decide to go that route. Interesting.

Eh, you know how the Japanese are with their L's and R's.

EDIT:

I should add that the pronunciation isn't a case of Engrish or anything, it's intentional. The same (English) word, "Valkyrie," is written and pronounced

バルキリー "ba-ru-ki-rii"

and the word used in the song Sayonara no Tsubasa, "Valkyria," is written/pronounced

バルキリア "ba-ru-ki-ri-a"

I don't know if you're familiar with the promotional art, but the "W" visual is getting lots of play here. The W in the idol group name, the hand signs, the wing configuration of Delta Squad's VF-31s, etc.

The Germanic influences in Delta ,iirc , are mostly in the Valkyrie and character names, such as Seigftied , Draken , Heinz, etc.  the Windermere kingdom has a medieval look and feel. Not sure if any of that is taken from Germanic influences.

I recommend watching it , it is Macross after all. Just not the best..

I'm sorry if I offended you or anything. I just corrected the 'wa-ri-kyuu-re' to 'wa-ru-kyuu-re' and 'wall-cue-ray' to 'war-cue-ray'. The reasons for that is because in katakana it was ワルキューレ (wa-ru-kyu-re). The second letter (ル) is 'Ru' and not 'Ri'. Regarding the 'wall' to 'war' on 'wall-cue-ray' since it's how fast sometimes they say the word in the show. We still don't hear the 'L' sound so I just corrected it to 'R'.

To make it short, I just corrected it based on the actual katakana word used and not the actual english word counterpart.

Ah.... You know, it's funny because I made extra sure too on the "valkyrie" translation to get that right. And yet didn't notice when checking Walkure (thrice!). Sometimes my eyes just roam right past what I'm supposed to be looking at.

A must have. Does anyone know which Island and fleet is illustrated in the background? Is this a Tenjin box art? It doesn't look like it to me..

Is there a backstory or much info about this squadron?

Turns out I did recall correctly... the SVF--124 Moon Shooters were first mentioned as a VF-17 squadron in This is Animation Special: Macross Plus (OVA Ver.) on page 96.  They were apparently split off from Apollo Base's Luna Guard and assigned to escort a long-distance emigrant fleet (but it doesn't say which).

Would have liked it if her 31E had the radar dish deployed, but going to get for the collection anyway.

So guess Mikumo's 31S will be beginning of next year?

Also HLJ is making the page right now, pre-order should be available shortly.

I'll pick one up just for the stowed-dome parts... if it comes with one.

Basically this. Plus it's a nice looking color scheme. Now I just need to acquire the Makina one like I told myself I would.
