Ok, I liked this "new"  Shadow Fighter.

As with their other "new" designs, it's just borrowed from somewhere else.  It's a lightly tweaked version of the earliest concept version of the Legioss back when it was still called the Vector, when MOSPEADA was under development as Descent Soldier Vector.

Personally, I think it's fugly.

Let me see... They will funding VF-X-6 Genia with YF-4??? frakking God... They will make Veritech Gamma VF-13??

Other way around... this panel says that Dana's being blamed for forcibly redirecting funding from development of the Alpha Fighter prototype1 to the YF-42.

This might look like a throwaway line, but this is Titan Comics doing some expert-tier trolling of die-hard Robotech fans.

If the Robotech RPG fan community hadn't basically imploded once Palladium Books got the rights, there would be actual fights going on over that one panel.  Like, actual flame wars and threats of violence from those two-and-a-half sentences.  The suggestion that the mecha of Robotech's Macross Saga are superior to the mecha of Robotech's other two sagas is a genuine berserk button for die-hard Robotech fans... especially fans who play the Robotech RPG.  It's a more reliable way to start a fight than saying "Roll for initiative", thanks to the point technically being true in the 2nd Edition Robotech RPG.  (Even after a massive NERF, the VF-1 is still basically as good as the game's massively buffed Alpha, and only got better after the setting changed and all the Macross mecha became invisible to the Invid because they don't use magic flower fuel.)

1. Presumably the Robotech-exclusive VF-X-6 Genia is the same as in From the Stars.
2. Macross's VF-X-4.

Par for the course... Robotech won't be happy until the metaphorical bar is being used for a limbo contest in Satan's wine cellar.

We get it already Titan Comics.  It still sucks to be a woman in the Robotech universe, and even more so in a watered down version trying to be a parody of a Macross show.

Really, I'd thought their point was that it sucks to be in the Robotech universe, period.

They literally started with a stable time loop of Forever War where humanity was repeatedly genocided by various aliens only to die horribly trying to go back into the past and stop it all from happening over and over again and in so doing start the loop of death and horror all over again.

Now they've added space zombies to the mix.

Posted (edited)

Every preview makes it look more and more insane. Giant space zombies? Alternate universes? Lost time travelers? Taking "obscure Robotech mecha that couldn't be explained away because they didn't have rights to later Macross" and doing something with it that the dwindling fanbase will lose their minds over? I'm loving all this glorious nonsense.

It looks seriously fun. Dunno about it being smart fun, but definitely some silly fun.

Give it an issue or two for the sales to slip a little further... then I'm sure we'll see all manner of faces traced from double peace sign ahegao hentai.

I think it's because the people working on this comic watched/pirated A LOT of Macross.  At least one person admitted it, and in the process exposed himself as a potential liability.  Hope that was just a clueless fanboy moment for that guy.

Spoiler Alert for Event Horizon Chapter 4 or Issue 24 October 2019

Spoiler

1. The comic opens with a flashback to the first investigations of the crashed space fortress on Macross Island. It shows Captain Gloval, Admiral Hayes, and Roy putting a 45 year old Rick into a body bag. They hope to change the imminent future with this knowledge.

2. Roy is injured and in a medical unit.

3. Lazlo Zand has gone missing.

4. Breetai is micronized and is part of a covert operation to penetrate the Regis’ hive. Minmei is also part of this team.

5. Azonia arrives in Optera space to assist the SDF-1.

6. Minmei uses pychic powers to stop Invid enemies.

7. Roy arrives in a super veritech to assist the covert operation.

8. Khyron also arrives to assist the SDF-1.

9. Rick and Minmei face the Regis and use their protoculture powers to transport characters from across the Robotech franchise to assist them against the Regis.

10. Minmei commands the Over-Mind/Invid Brain to provide its information about the Flower of Life and Shadow Technology. She commands the Over-Mind to send its forces to a distant reality.

11. Minmei disappears along with the Invid.

12. Roy seemingly saved Rick from his time loop destiny. Miriya was in a prison cell on the SDF-1. Rick, Lisa, Roy, and Claudia get married.

13. The backup comic titled Curtain Call implies Minmei is dead. However, in a final panel of this comic Dr. Lang, Karl Riber, and Minmei are shown informing all the displaced Robotech franchise characters they have the option of returning to their timeline or joining the REF. Showing Minmei in this panel is most likely an error.

(14. Merry Christmas!)

3. A note is left on the hologram projector reading “She’s Alive!”

4. Rick regretfully decides to inform Lisa he wishes to stay on Earth and find Minmei.

5. Lancer is shown speeding away from the SDF-1 in Macross City Lake. He was the computer hacker downloading files from the SDF-1.

6. Dana hopes the unknown hacker can help Rick find Minmei and return her to her own timeline.

I'll forgo the the spoiler alert with the assumption nobody cares.

Why does Minmei have to have Protoculture powers?  They could have kept her singing since she doesn't have to actually make any noise in a comic book.  The spoilers make this sound more and more like spaghetti thrown against the wall or a train heading over a cliff with the track out in the middle of a blizzard with a tornado coming in.

Really, seeing it all distilled into a handful of sentence fragments really throws the cr*p quality of the writing at Titan into sharp relief.

When they're not just stealing ideas from existing franchises, they're throwing out random Days of our Lives-esque nonsense to fill pages.

NICE.

Really, that there was a complete non sequitur posted in this thread by accident and we literally couldn't tell if it was relevant to the comic or not says all that needs to be said about the horrid quality and "throw everything at the wall to see what sticks" approach Titan took with its Robotech alterniverse story.

Well, it does describe the quality of the crap they're tossing into the comic. If Robotech is a soap opera, that would be it's name. :D

What a shame that whatever Faustian covenant they sealed to improve the art was paid for with further deterioration of the writing.  It went from Ed Wood levels of awful to Uwe Boll levels of awful.

Robotech's version is a little different... you get to choose any two from:

  • Fast
  • Cheap
  • Complete

Quality is never an option when it's Robotech.  Instead, it's whether or not they actually manage to finish what they've started... which they almost never do.  (Admittedly a lot of the time it isn't up to them whether or not they finish, the poor quality of their work speaks for itself in the sales numbers and the plug gets pulled anyway.)

WTF are they using katakana in the title?  Do they think if they throw some Japanese in there, it gives it any more credibility?

I wonder if Robocrap has a following in Japan.

That's probably what they hope it'll do... though I suspect it's more an expression of Harmony Gold's desire to shift public perception of Robotech away from the unflattering reality and towards what they aspire to have Robotech seen as: "American Macross".  They've been trying very hard to court Macross fans over the last few years, double-branding all their merch as both Robotech and Super Dimension Fortress Macross.

How many people do you need to constitute a "following"?  Because, as far as I've seen, there is precisely one Japanese Robotech fan: yui1107

(She mostly just vandalizes Japanese Wikipedia pages for MacrossSouthern Cross, or MOSPEADA with Robotech information and spreads borderline unintelligible misinformation using the more gullible and desperate members of the Robotech fandom.)

I stand by what I said in another thread about HG; with some context, clearly the wrong people got mad at everything that happened in 2019.  The only bending over that is happening because of it is at Robotech’s expense.

Posted

What does the Katakana say?  Not surprising - they did have a panel about the Japanese names of the characters appearing in one dimension.  More of the spaghetti on the wall plot is all it is.  At least my guess.

Spoiler

Spoiler Alert for Robotech Remix Issue 1 November 2019

1. A pop star named Aahna is interviewing Dana on an MTV-like television show.

2. The scene cuts to Dana's private quarters and Dana has a hologram locket from a married Bowie and Musica of her original timeline. Bowie and Musica play an ancient Trirolian song. In the hologram Bowie explains there are secrets to be discovered inside this alien song.

3. In the main timeline of Remix Dana is now Bowie's guardian and he is a small child.

4. Vince Grant is the commander of Vermillion Squadron.

5. It seems an inter-dimensional fugitive enters this timeline and is pursued by pursuers from its own timeline. The pursuers seem like Zor and Tirolians. The Zor like character is named Frudah Arminius Blanc. He knows Dana.

6. Lisa is Captain of the SDF-3 in space and Max is the Captain of the SDF-1 on Earth. (However, in the previous Titan issues Rick sent the SDF-3 back to Macross Island with Dana which 1999 inhabitants experienced as the SDF-1. Therefore, in this issue, form an out-of-universe perspective, Max is in the SDF-3 and Lisa is in the SDF-6. ??? What happened to Zor's original battle fortress? It should have crashed with the SDF-3 in 1999.)

7. Bowie from this timeline stole the melody from Dana's hologram locket performed by him in Dana's original timeline. Bowie gives the melody to Cameron Baker, younger brother of Jack Baker.

8. A pollinator is shown but the spores were never released on Earth in this timeline.

9. The inter-dimensional fugitive crashes and his orders are to kill Dana.

10. Rick Hunter is AWOL.

Dude, I don't think the Spoiler tag is necessary... you can't exactly spoil a plot that's completely incoherent at best and downright incomprehensible at worst.

Given what we saw in the previous iteration of the time loop, it appears that Zor's battlefortress probably only existed in the original timeline that accidentally created the time loop in the first place.  In this - and apparently every - iteration of the time loop, the ship that crashed on Earth in 1999 was actually the SDF-3 from the previous time loop iteration which was sent back in time by accident or design and subsequently mistaken for an alien ship until it was thoroughly examined.

All told, it feels like they stole the plot from the David Mack Star Trek novel Section 31: Disavowed... which had a similar sort of time loop story involving the Breen attempting to steal a wormhole-drive prototype from the Mirror Universe only to accidentally crash it on a remote planet in the past in the prime universe where they would later discover the wreckage that clued them into that technology's existence and prompted their attempt to steal one in the first place.

I think it means they're both captain of the SDF-1/3.  Presumably Max is captain Tuesday through Thursday, then Lisa has the ship from Friday to Sunday with alternating Mondays.
