JetJockey
I was reading about Megazone 23 and Kumi Miyasato. On her wiki it states that: "Megazone 23 Part 1 was the very second OAV in anime history and the very first to make a profit. It is said that this is largely due to Kumi's vocal performance (both spoken and sung), which is often called by its fans the highlight of the series. She has been said to rival Mari Iijima of The Super Dimension Fortress Macross fame." It made me wonder how many popular anime singing girls are out there? And who are the best? I think Priss and Minmay were always tops for me. The original Japanese versions. But I want to see Megazone 23 as soon as I can now. Valkyrie Hunter D
Aside from the singers in everything Macross, I can't think of a lot right off the top of my head. Eve's songs in MZ 23 Pt. 2 are great, and Priss will always be a fave for me. How about Orange Road's Madoka Ayukawa? Sure she's not presented as a singer many times, but when she is, it's made clear she has tremendous talent as a singer.
seti88
Haha i just so happen to remember those songs that impacted me during my teen years! Another one... Thanks to the internet have been able to track down those songs that meant so much to me back then. I think the song was sung by akino arai, but back then i didnt know who sang it.. F-ZeroOne
A Macross forum and no-ones mentioned Sharon Apple yet? (granted, there are... questions that may be raised over the authenticity of her work, but OTOH, most manufactured bands don't have a heavily armed alien battleship to fight their corner for them... ). Vifam7
No love for Ishtar (voice actress & singer: Kasahara Hiroko)?
kajnrig
This is something of an oldie, but still more recent compared to most everyone else thus far, lol. DoCo, ie the VAs for the main female cast in Ranma 1/2 (Ranko, Akane, Nabiki, Kasumi, Shampoo), became mildly popular in the 90s. They fashioned their "band name" after an actual pop idol group at the time, Coco. If I remember correctly, some of their songs were covers of Coco's music, too. More recent-ish, Aya Hirano and Minori Chihara became pretty well-known in the 00s for their respective roles in the Haruhi series. Hirano sang a lot of the series music, and Chihara sang the end credits song for the Haruhi movie.

I need a Priss singing figure. And not some small scale thing like what Minimum Factory released for Minmay. And wouldn't you know when I want to get Megazone 23 cheap on DVD, it's out of print and expensive.

akt_m
As far as popularity goes. I would guess the girls from Love Live: Idol School Project wins. Do their voice actresses sing well? No.
JetJockey
Those Megazone songs don't work for me. Not available in the US. But I found I think the first or a vocal soundtrack somewhere when searching. I listened to bits as I didn't want to ruin their placement in the show. It did sound good. JetJockey
I just remembered that Zillion has the team as a band on the soundtrack with Apple as lead singer. I haven't seen all the episodes yet so I don't know if they are a band in their off time and the cover is just something clever for the soundtrack. It doesn't seem like they are from the few episodes I've seen though. Also, in the Zillion Burning Night movie there is the intro with Apple singing. They used this song in an episode of the Twelve Monkeys tv show too. I can't believe we are getting a good scale Apple figure before Priss or Minmay. 505thAirborne
If I have to break away from Macross, Project A-ko & my beloved Bubble Gum Crisis, then I have to go with Eve from Megazone 23 part II.
