Many of the abridged movie versions for Macross can actually be skipped (disclaimer: Have not seen any Mac 7 so no comment on that). They really only have minor story variations with significantly recycled animation from their respective series.

Macross DYRL though is whole different kettle of fish. Although the best enjoyment to be gotten require having seen the TV series first for deeper background & character contexts, the visuals have been redrawn from ground up to be more detailed, fluid and with changes that wholly qualifies it as more of a full remake rather than a summarized version of the series. One can feel that this was really a labour of love from the creators, and watching FB:2012 right after that is a bittersweet icing-on-cake experience.

I find it ironic that this was only done for the original Macross, so the magic of Macross DYRL is something that has never been recaptured by its successors.

I agree. The quality of DYRL is astonishing, even now after 35 years from its release i think it's better than most of the productions that come out these days. Not to mention Mikimoto's character design. I think we have been graced to have the same, fantastic story told twice in different formats. I personally love both of them.

I'd never seen DYRL before joining this forum back in whatever it was. I got a DVD copy and still to this day I enjoy pulling it out maybe once a year to still be blown away by the quality of the animation. The music is also better than the TV show IMHO. The plot, well, whatever, it is what it is, it's cramming a whole lot into not much time.  I grew up watching Robotech so actually watching Macross, Southern Cross,  Mospeada and DYLR later in life in my late 20's early 30's was really fun. From there I watched Zero, mehhh..., Macross 7 - I thought it was fun, Frontier, which I still think is a close 2nd to the original and way up there on the re-watch scale, and event Delta, which I never finished...like a lot of folks here..LOL. I'm glad I got into it more, not to mention it got my deep into the BOTTEMLESS MONEY PIT this hobby is!

Cat's Eye! I should have thought of that.

Never played any RT games, but I'm assuming the mission ended in much the same way as the show?

In sudden, unexpected WTF frustration?  Pretty much.

You’re basically blasting Regults and Zent’ fighters left and right.  And one little turd winds up slowly draining the life outta the Cat’s Eye while you’re otherwise occupied (like a cheap little mosquito).

Hikaru's 1S was one of my earlier projects. It's the original Yamato release paired with the strike parts from the premium finish set. I did that so all my DYRL valks were the same shade of dark white with rainbow canopies. :)

Max's 1A is the only hero valk from the movie I haven't worked on yet.

I think I'm going to need another case so I can split the TV and DYRL valkyries into different shelves. There's just too many VF-1 variants from original recipe Macross. :aggressive:

This is just the Yamato/Arcadia (and one Takatoku) stuff. Haven't even gotten to any DX or HMR versions. Or the second PF SDF-1 I wanted to put in cruiser mode...

@Lolicon Those stand look great! Will they also hold the 1:48 DX series? especially the ones holding more then one Valk...?

Those are Yetistands. I never tried them with the DX line, but I don't see why they wouldn't. Yeti did sell DX adapters before he went away.

You can get Archi stands now, which are similar to Yeti and just as good.

Taking my valks from storage and setting them up on Yeti stands in the moducase is more time consuming than I expected.

Frontier shelf coming along. Nothing is 100% done yet. Just working on getting fighters up on their stands.

Gonna start on Zero/Plus/7 for row 3. Delta gets the bottom row where it belongs.

Set up the Zero/Plus/7 shelf. This one took a bit more effort because the Zero valks are monstrously huge, especially the Sv-51s. They're so big and heavy that they broke their 3D printed adapters so I had to drill a hole into them and insert a metal pin to reinforce them.

And I still don't have enough room for all of Diamond and Emerald Force. That will have to wait until I get my next set of cases. :unknw:

That really is a beautiful display.

Far as the VF-19P goes though, I think the plastic is actually a very specific shade of off-white.  It doesn't show up in photos under lights, but it always felt like it had a slight bluish-gray tint to it for me, which might help the plastic not to yellow.

I don't know if it works the same way with plastic as it does with paint, but painting things a very slight shade of off-white tends to help the paint not to yellow.

Thanks all. Honestly didn't think it would take so long to set up these shelves. Can't wait to get my next set of moducases so I can add the 1/48 stuff. I guess I can throw in a Gundam or two if there's room.

The bottom (Delta) shelf will have to wait until 2024 as I will be out of town for the rest of the year.

Just noticed you mentioned mounting a second PF SDF-1 in cruiser.. how viable are hanging or wall mounts in the Moducases?  I do not know if I would trust it myself, but you could theoretically suspend the cruiser over the top of everything, either from a hanging mount, or maybe somehow on the back panel of the case.

And yes, I fully realize how heavily that's tempting fate.

The back and tops of the cases are particle board, so I imagine it shouldn't be too hard to drill into them to add mounting brackets.

The struggle for space is real...

Yep. Even for someone who has a relatively smaller collection compared to others here, eking out every inch of available display space is a challenge, lol.

After rearranging my other Macross shelf, I started fiddling with my other DYRL CMs figures to see if I can straighten their feet and legs well enough to make them stand without the included stands with just a bit of bluetack. Here's my current DYRL shelf because I suddenly preferred the SDF-1 in ship mode (2nd pic was my old setup). But I had to move the VT-1 and VE-1 to a different shelf.20231217_165933.jpg.ece1b4decce6bb7c69907c8b61c435be.jpg20110708_111800_IMG_6468.JPG.19aa95480a5024ee97240973f05e355e.JPG

Now I'm trying to find a way to fit the VT-1 and VE-1 back while keeping the SDF-1 in ship mode.

P.S. after more than 15 years, I only just discovered to remove the extra bangs on the CMs Hikaru figure so the front hair piece can fit flush and his eyes can be more visible

@m0n5t3r Nice that you managed to not use any stand for the CM's figures. :good: The included ones are quite fiddly anyway, I switched some of them to using KO Tamashii Stage Act stands.

Are the VF-1s on Yamato Mighty Block stands?

(man, I hope this is the right place for this...)

Seeing people's collections on display is magnificent! Mine is still growing, and I can't justify (or have the space) for anything like a Moduspace (some day!)

I currently have a 2x8 Kallax I am using for displaying my Macross collection. I have it lit with some small puck lights that I thought were a great idea at the time, but there's a lot of shadows and just inconsistency with them.

I'd LOVE to replace the pucks with a RGB (or RGBIC?) lighting solution, bonus points if it's Apple HomeKit compatible. If it doesn't work with HomeKit, I definitely want a remote for it.

Kallax units have 13" openings (again, I feel that's likely common knowledge around these parts).

Thank you all so much!

nothing to fancy, but I either have stuff displayed on my kallax shelf or the fext hobby display. Still working on the lighting for the middle shelf with the DX VF-1s…

oh and my YF-19 sits kinda lonely up above the shelf sadly. But it’ll get it’s company soon enough!

I love the backlighting effect of the first image up top.  Most shelf displays suffer from the classic overhead lighting effect.  Too much glare, monochromatic setting, vanilla display.  By choosing backlighting from below, you've enhanced the drama noticeably.  Very cool.  A big fan.  Never seen that before.

But I noticed you've done that with the others as well.  Unless there's some magic of photography I'm missing, you have a clear grasp of light contrasts.  For this reason, it's the best shelf display in tight spaces I've ever seen.  (Anybody can do large spaces, that's child's play.).  Bravo.
