I think the story is weak, but the characters are a serious win that really makes up for anything wrong in the plot and writing department.

Agreed. It's standard action-comedy fare but gorram do Ryan Reynolds and Sam Jackson play well off of each other, and are each fantastic independently too.

I also think the awkward romance between Hayek and Jackson is just as great as the chemistry between Jackson and Reynolds. The cast is the reason this film succeeds and they are just so much fun.
