GrahamT Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Here's some progress on my 1/100 Armored Factory. I'm working on a Bandai re-issue kit and an old Revell Robotech kit, I'm restoring the one I had as a kid - so x4 gates in total. For the colour scheme I'm mostly following the original Arii box, but with the yellow cranes from the Revell box build. I plan to add lighting and a roof later. Quote
sh9000 Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 That's awesome. One day I'll get around to working on mine. Quote
GrahamT Posted August 12, 2016 Author Posted August 12, 2016 That's awesome. One day I'll get around to working on mine. Many thanks. I've had these kits for years - I'd open the box, gaze at all the parts - and not know where to start. Then one day I just put together one of those little power unit thingys... and I was hooked. Then one day I just put together one of those little power unit thingys... and I was hooked. I'm also currently finishing off my 2nd 'gate'. The 'gate' parts are surprisingly easy to assemble (the jeep, on the other hand...). Aside from wanting a bit more detail on the Armoured VF-1 that comes with it, the set is really great. Quote

I haven't tackled the jeep yet - I have 4 of them to face - My biggest challenge was painting the pipes - I had a lot of problems with that. Quote
MechTech Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Looking good! You're doing what I wanted to do years ago! That's cool putting two sets together. - MT Quote
edstuff Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 That's awesome man! I grew up in kind of a rough neighborhood as a kid. Me and my other "nerd" friend would walk to this one toy store and buy these kits and sit around his living room building them. It was a little hole in the wall and had a very small model section but they always had revell robotech kits. They never turned out that great because we were only like 10 or 11 but man I always loved them. Just seeing the kits always brings back an old nostalgic feeling. I think I need to look for at least one for my collection one day. Quote

Here's a pic of my Revell Factory before restoration with it's hand painted enamels and random decal placement! - The bay on the right has had the old paintjob stripped off using oven cleaner - it came up really well. I had loads of Revell Robotech kits back in the 80's - and I built them knowing nothing of the Macross and Dougram stories. It would be decades before I'd get to see the original TV series and learn what these amazing mech designs were all about. My first true experience with Macross however was going into my local model shop and finding an Arii 1/100 Destroid Tomahawk - I was obsessed with Takani's painting on the box. I bought it in the UK in the mid 80's for £1.75 (still has the price label!), which is about $2-3. The wonderful and amazing thing is that model shop still exists with the same owners after 40 years! VF-1A Grunt Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 Aside from wanting a bit more detail on the Armoured VF-1 that comes with it, the set is really great. It's great that there are some better-quality 1/100 scale models it there now to go with this set, like the Wave Battroids. Maybe one of those could be combined with the armored VF-1. Quote
MechTech Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 I was the same way buying the Robotech models. Not only the "Robotech" boxing, but Battle Tech too. They had the Nichimo Macross kits and Crusher Joe kits reboxed too. I built like two of most conventional aircraft so when these came out in the U.S., I loved them! I probably spent every dime on them too! Thankfully my Cross Country practice got canceled one day and I got to see the first episode. That's when I learned how to program a VCR One day I was in this collectors store and saw the factory sitting way up on a shelf with so much dust on it, you could hardly see it! I got so excited, I had to compose myself and act "cool." I calmly reached up, dusted it off and bought it! It was a LONG drive home that day waiting to open it up!!! - MT Quote

Maybe one of those could be combined with the armored VF-1. That's a god idea. I'm also trying to add some depth and detail to the old Arii 1/100 Destroids. I've had a good look around this forum and can't find many other Factory build up pics. There are a few on the web of course, especially if you search in Japanese, but still not many. Quote
MechTech Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 No, I never did finish it, but I still have everything. I switched scales and that's why I stopped it. So now I'd do one in like 1/350th scale. I could probably fit four on a dollar bill! - MT Quote
GrahamT Posted August 18, 2016 Author Posted August 18, 2016 Love the rusty doors! Cheers, I enjoyed myself there with the old Tamiya weathering kits Quote
