VF-1A Grunt Posted February 24, 2018 Posted February 24, 2018 Has the separate canopy frame ever been done on model aircraft before (at least in this small a scale)? I’m a little concerned that unless it’s done perfectly with the toughest possible tolerances, you’re going to see gaps between the frame and “glass” that will make it look like a snap-together kit. This is going to be entirely up to the quality of Wave's molds. I've seen it done with Bandai's Star Wars kits in 1/72 (specifically the A-Wing.. though whether that counts as 1/72 is another story), but that's Bandai for you. This kit looks like it will need to be of similar quality molding to pull off that sort of assembly. Edited February 24, 2018 by Chronocidal Quote
derex3592 Posted February 24, 2018 Posted February 24, 2018 I was sitting here staring at my Bandai A-Wing thinking that exact same thing! Quote
kajnrig Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 IIRC, Bandai's Star Wars kits have a choice between a clear canopy or just the frame without any windows, which is significantly different from what this Wave kit does, ie separate frame and window parts. Quote
Vifam7 Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 (edited) Bandai's VF-1 kit has the lower part of the frame (the canopy rails) separate from the canopy. It worked fine. Edited February 25, 2018 by Vifam7 Quote

The A-Wing is actually the oddball of the Bandai bunch, since that was one of the few studio models that actually had a transparent canopy, instead of windowless frames. There's no glass-less option for that one. I'd forgotten about the Bandai VF-1 kit though (possibly on purpose ), but yeah, again, it'll come down to how accurate Wave can make the molds. Transparent plastic usually just winds up brittle and hard to work with. Quote
slide Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 That's what I get for Caving and picking up a DX VF-31C last week... ah well Quote
kajnrig Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 At first I thought this was a promo for a Hase VF-4 and I was like HNNNNNNNGGGGGHHH TAKE ALL MY MONEY but this is nice too Quote

Thom Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 Will found when it arrives. Jut been notified by HLJ that they have taken possession of their money and my VF4 is on the wing! Quote
kajnrig Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 (edited) Same, straight into PW. EDIT: By the by, it was Order Stop leading up to release date, but HLJ shows it has plenty in stock, so if you're still looking to get one, now's your chance. Edited March 26, 2018 by kajnrig Quote
Chronocidal Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 Oho, I expected it to be more than that, but HLJ's price sold me for a pair. Hopefully the kit sticks around for a long while, because I can see myself making a whole series of these in assorted F-14 squadron markings. Quote
Dobber Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 Completely forgot about this and then I saw it was paid for at HLJ. It’s safely waiting in my PW. Chris Quote
kajnrig Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 The high-ish price was perplexing for the longest time, but knowing that it's snap-fit now, that cost ties neatly into all the extra plastic needed. Quote

MechTech Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 Post some picture guys of the parts. I'm slowly getting back into 1/72 kits. I might get one. I love my old resign kit back in the 80's... - MT Quote

I don't think my build will even come close. Nevertheless, looking forward to working on it... just as soon as I finish some other kits... My order with HLJ shipped today! Quote
505thAirborne Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 Look carefully at the box art (which is amazing by the way) the flight helmet is from Flashback 2012 while the actual pilot is from VFX. Quote
mickyg Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 It looks nice. Anyone else seeing those panel lines as a bit thick, though? Quote

Snap-fit kits are always such a pain when you want to build them "traditionally." All the solid connections actually make for way more work, at least for me. I have to cut down all the pegs and holes so that they're little more than guide rails and the actual holding together comes from the glue/cement. Quote
