Gubaba
Lol No, and I do get what you mean. I just think that... I dunno. One of the things I appreciated about 08th MS Team (Gundam) was that the majority of the cast were 20s and up; Shiro Amada is 21(?) when the story begins. It can help lend characters a bit of but not too much maturity, but mostly I just like it because it's a shift away from the 15-18-year old protagonists that we normally see. It's for the same reason that I appreciate the Myung/Isamu/Guld cast in M+, and FFVII's main cast being mostly 21 years old or above.EDIT:(They don't ever mention age, but I picture the M+ trio being 30-ish. The Macross Wiki lists Isamu as 24, which I can also buy even if I don't at all trust it as a source of reliable information.)EDIT 2 because lol I know it seems that way and I have no way to disprove it despite having perfectly innocent motives:Isamu is 24, Guld is 25, Myung is 23.Sharon is 1. kajnrig
Isamu is 24, Guld is 25, Myung is 23. Sharon is 1. Thanks for that. See? I really am just bad with anime age.
Gubaba
Thanks for that. See? I really am just bad with anime age. And nearly all the members of Walküre are too young for you. As are the main characters of any Judy Blume, Beverley Cleary, or S.E. Hinton novel.
frothymug
One of my rules of thumb in regards to anime love triangles is that it's almost always the FIRST one that the MC meets that wins his or her heart in the end. However, Macross has consistently turned that trope on its head, almost always awarding that distinction to the SECOND of two. Misa > Minmei, Sara > Mao, Sheryl > Ranka. Plus was an exception and Seven had no resolution. I'm playing the odds here and betting on Mirage.

ManhattanProject972
Damn those Walkure girls got some big cojones, singing and dancing in the middle of a battlefield, jumping out of a fighter plane at altitude to get to said battlefield, and one of them has bigger cojones than the rest of 'em actually "attacking" the enemy while singing and dancing. With the merging of the singing and the fighting in a way thats more exciting than 7's I wonder if theres going to be any good old fashion concerts that dont end with some sort of violence like Sharron's in Plus. And Hayate is the second coming of Max minus the corrective lenses... at least in Batteroid mode.
UN Spacy
I'm still putting my money on ONE member of Walkure not making it outta this series alive. We've never lost an idol singer in Macross...this might be the show that changes that.
Karaoke Ninja
i love that they cut the sychronized mech dancing sequencing short to a point where it's almost acceptable. That was my main gripe in the previous episode. Overall I like this much better. But they didn't cut it down at all. That scene is still the exact same length as it was in the preview episode. Zinjo
Well the completed episode certainly grows on you! It was fun and entertaining. A sweeping space war opera it is not, but it looks like it could be fun. The whole dancing VF-171 reminded me of the old westerns where the bad guy forces someone to dance by shooting at his feet... . I did notice not many fatalities among the giants too. Most attacks were aimed at disabling the mecha than destruction. I get the whole "naked joy" moments mentioned in the podcast and was glad I listened to it before seeing this so I had some context going in. Hayate discovers his joy of flying a valk and Freyja simply reacting to the joy of singing with the Walkyre. The crystals in their hair are called Runes, so that will no doubt be significant. I expect they are a naturally occurring crystal similar to the Vajra's fold quartz, or perhaps they are given to them at a certain age of maturity as a symbolic rite of passage. We'll see. The Windarians are clearly a known people to humanity at this point. Though how much is known about them may be little. The songstress who started the whole outbreak most definitely reminded me of an emulator from M2, with the seat at the top of a pedestal staircase, only she had some sort of energy vortex behind her. I suspect that is how she transmits her song. I still think the var virus is more an activated aggressiveness gene rather than a virus. Something triggered by fold music, perhaps a way of "encouraging" Zentradi to fight back in the days of the PC. Those affected could be Zentradi, pure blood or intermixed blood with a certain proclivity to the condition. I guess we'll have to see as the story develops. The voice actress for Freyja is definitely playing up the cutsie aspect of the character and in some ways it really works. I am reminded how Mari made Minmay her own during SDFM to the point where I can't imagine anyone else voicing the character now. So far I am glad I kept an open mind on this one. PrimumMobile
I still think it's amusing that they got Asami Seto to voice Mirage. She's a seiyuu known for er singing talent. Maybe Mirage will become a idol/pilot hybrid? Here's her singing voice of you are curious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVczSSWBqJk Edited April 5, 2016 by PrimumMobile
Rbstr
Mirage is clearly going to be a bit too serious overall and I'm sure that she's going to get some opportunity to loosen up over the series. Singing with Freyja, where the talented VA is probably disired. Also dancing with Hayate ect. I'm guessing, though, they're also setting up the hard work vs. innate talent conflict between her and Hayate (and it'll also conflict with her family, who've been notable piloting prodigies). Clearly her thing is going to be that she's too serious/strict for her own good. Got a bit too much Milia in her! I really like that one of the main girls is a pilot. I hope the plot doesn't cause her to end up incompetent/damsel-in-distressed much. It'd be nice to have her end up the real ace pilot out of the main/younger group of characters One of my rules of thumb in regards to anime love triangles is that it's almost always the FIRST one that the MC meets that wins his or her heart in the end. BlueMax
Just finally got to watching the full episode 1 (had watched the preview earlier)! The last few minutes, as mentioned, was absolutely classic Macross moments. I wasn't sure if I would like this new series, but those added few minutes at the end, sold it for me. I will watch with interest Hayate's career as the series progresses. The action went well with Ikenai Borderline.

frothymug
And, according to the movies, Sheryl met Alto first, when they were children. True, but I wasn't really talking about the movies. I mean, the same kind of arrangement happened in DYRL where the first "meeting" was with Misa. Alternatively, it could be that the older, more mature, one typically wins. Also true. ManhattanProject972
Well my impression of Mirage is that she is essentially a gender bent Gamlin. Even Gamlin had time to try to romance Mylene, I doubt Mirage will do any of the romancing in this series at least until the very end of Delta where she would eventually realize her feelings for a certain blue haired protagonist. But those two are like oil and water so im very curious as to how in the world those two would even begin to attract one another. Im seeing a bit of Hikaru and Misa in their relationship from what we know about them.

Using the Gamlin-Basara relationship as a guide Mirage would likely have frustrations with the insufferable genius but eventually Hayate will earn her respect and she'll learn to loosen up as well as improving her own piloting skill. When one is from the pedigree of the Jenius family, the pressure to be a great pilot is likely immense! So for Mirage to be a "very good" pilot instead of "great" would be frustrating. kajnrig
Considering how loose Macross is with canon, it could very well be that the only "real" couple to date is Max/Milia. Everything else is Schrodinger's cat.

anime52k8
Wait... there's porn parody of Macross??? Which Macross series? All of them? there are entire libraries of porn doujins for Macross frontier, every single genre and fetish you can think off and then some. There's actually a decent amount of SDF:M/DYRL doujins too. There's some 7 and while I've never personally looked for plus or II doujins I'm sure they exist. JetJockey
I'm still not sure about this one. I'm going to wait a few more episodes, then stop and see if I want to get the full show in the best possible resolution and sound format when they are finished. When I watched the 1st episode, I thought it was just the preview again. Then I searched online for the opening, which I'm always excited to see, I thought maybe it's at the end for some odd reason. Then I noticed the new material. I like the battles and the music is good. So was the animation and look of the jet towards the end. But I think I want something more adult looking. At least, when I was young, Macross was adult in looks. I can't imagine that this really looks adult to kids these days. And the dancing girls still come off like holograms. I want to see more of their story. Get a better understanding of the group. Edited April 6, 2016 by JetJockey
d3v
Idols, it's Macross, they'll do fine. From a civilian Destroid to breakdance fighting in a grunt 171, just what the heck is Hayate? He gets the blue Valk this time around, which should explain everything. The fact that the three characters share a scene pretty much 100% confirms Mirage is the other point of the triangle. Especially since Hayate didn't interact with any other females at all. Main character has to interact with the two other members of the triangle in the first ep. Tis Macross law (And I've just set myself up for a bunch of counter examples) Main image on the official site focuses on the three of them. So that should pretty much confirms it. David Hingtgen
And raw amount of merchandise----Mirage wouldn't have her own figure etc coming already if she was "just" a pilot. She's got more stuff than most of the idols.
