Be warned, below is a long rant, if you love Yamato 2202, don't click it, it's better for everyone involved that way.

Is it possible it looks all AFU because the films are done up in film format (not television episodic)?

Posted

No, it is in the episodic format.  It was just mind bogglingly disjointed in a lot of ways, I'm going to reserve final judgement until the subs come out, but it felt pretty horrible in terms of the actions.  We'll just have to see.

It's a 110 issue magazine by Hachette that will release parts for a 2202 Yamato in 1/350 scale, sort of like DeAgostini publications like the one with Millenium Falcon. The finished model will feature several light and sound gimicks, controled from a dedicated control box. Final price tag is above $2000 but you get a nifty 95 cm Yamato and a Yamato Fact File style collection in the end.

Wow how much that gonna cost?

Oh, probably triple what the OG 1/350 kit did when Bandai released it...

at least they seem to be hitting all the same gimmicks...

Posted (edited)

Well, this will end up costing over $2000 but at least you can pay it in weekly instalments.

Also of note that a lot of the kit is die cast.

OH... so I could pay an Extra $1000 in shiping 15 installments to Canada?! Awesome!!

I realize the quality of these things [Like De'Agostini's Falcon] but...

As a modeler I'd rather hunt down one of Bandai's if I had the money to buy/time to build/space to display a Giant SBY.

Still Super-Jealous of anyone who can afford the investment and space to display her, though!

Maybe once I've payed off my mortgage  I can think about really cool toys like this...

Yeah.

Iirc, the 1/350 Bandai kit also had lights and electronics, and was around US$500 (excluding shipping-fees).

Lights, sounds, moving Turrets, etc... it's quite the box...

Huh, even though they're at the same scale, the Hachette model is going to be longer at 3.1 feet as opposed to Bandai's at 2.8 \feet; a difference of just over 3 inches.

Wasn't the Yamato's sizing-specs retconned with the 2199/2202 versions?

The Hachette kit looks to be the 2202-edition.

Thought the Bandai 1/350 kit was for the old school Yamato specs.

A little off topic, but Yamato related.....

Haven't watched this show, but I want to now, just to see the visual effects.

Apparently.  Visually, it looks as good if not better than the 2005 film Otoko Tachi No Yamato.

That film really irked me btw.  They built a third of the ship in 1/1 scale, yet still managed to make it look fake in the movie.  It looked more real in tourist photos than it did in the film.

did they (the Japanese) have working helicopters in WWII? I thought the first combat use of helicopters was the Korean War?

Nope they didn't. The shot is from The Man in the High Castle where an alternative outcome of WWII takes center, so that's why we see a Kamov helicopter buzzing the Yamato.

First combat use was in WW2 - very limited and I forget exactly what it was.  Not by Japan however.

Yeah, The Man in the High Castle takes place in an alternate reality late 1950’s where the Axis powers won WWII and have occupied America. Japan has west of the Rockies and Germany East. It’s VERY depressing, good but depressing. I haven’t watched beyond season 1. Don’t know if I’m up to it.

Regardless, that pic is awesome...

Someone working for the show must have been a real battleship nut to recreate the ship so accurately (apart from the slight modernization of the helicopter pad).

I just notices something wrong with this pic: The ship is underway. Why does the flags still fly at the bow & stern flag staff's? Now I have no idea what the deal was a 100 years ago but modern procedures, for the USN, when they call 'Underway, Shift Colors!' on the 1MC, the Union Jack [or the Don't Tread on Me Flag] on the bow and the National Ensign on the stern are lowered at the same time, the bigger National Ensign is raised on the at-sea flag staff on the back of the bridge tower. maybe it's for dramatic effect, but I think the makers of this pic goof'ed.
