DuffCon Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 (edited) So I reached a odd place in my collection. Over the last 2-ish years I've managed to collect 6 1/60 Valks; 3 v2 Yamarcadia, 1 V1 Yamato and a couple others. So as we all know, over the last 2 years, the cost of the 1/60 scale has grown exponentially with no sign of relief. Some of the oddball VF-1 Variants will probably never be re-released by Arcadia as they seem to be concentrating on low run, high cost toys. So I got excited when the Hi-Metal R line was announced. Finally a chance to get things like the VT-1 / VE-1 / Etc for a "reasonable" price. Except that it's not that easy to get this line either, though it's possible to pickup the first releases around $100 so it still a hell of a lot better than the ~$250 Arcadia/Bandai entry fee. So here I am sitting around wondering if I should start getting Hi-Metal Rs. Right now, my game plan is to pickup a 1J GBP and check it out, if it's nice enough I would probably sell off my 1/60s and use the money to fund a 1/100 collection. Alternatively I really don't see my 1/60 collection going any further, especially when I can't afford to get any new pieces. I can justify a $100 toy every once in a while, but $200+? Not really. I guess my question to the group is: has anyone else done this? Were they pleased? Edited February 2, 2016 by DuffCon Quote
EXO Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 There's really no hope for me to complete my 1/60 collection unless Arcadia starts to reissue the VF-1 line. But at those prices, I'm not sure if there's even hope then. I'm collecting the 1/100s because it seems more like a complete line when it includes enemy mechs and hopefully a complete line of Destroids. It seems big enough to make small figures and support vehicles too. Quote
arbit Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 (edited) If they do the full collection in HM-R, then sounds like a good idea to downsize for someone price and space conscious. Although it seems like Bandai will do a lot of interesting stuff, and some unexpected great things already, I just don't see them completing the HM-R for valks as far as Yamato went. If Bandai does, it will be awesome and I'm all in. But on the other hand, if you want a great transforming toy in your hands, there really is no substitute for a V2 Yamarcadia. (Yamato, we still salute you.) Edited February 2, 2016 by arbit Quote
jvmacross Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 If you are not a completist....the new HMR line will give you a good mix of several Macross mecha, including enemy mecha. If Bandai actually delivers on some of the items that they teased for the HMR line....you should be good to go. If you just collect DYRL mecha...the HM/HMR line is pretty close to releasing everything Yamato ever released....and then some! Quote
Vifam7 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 (edited) I would just keep the 3 1/60v2 Yamato/Arcadia toys and start the new Hi-Metal R collection. Even though your 1/60 collection isn't going to expand, you'll want to keep the few you have just to have them. It doesn't have to be all of this or all of that. I find it more fun to collect up and down the spectrum. Edited February 2, 2016 by Vifam7 Quote
Big s Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I think that if you have any sentimental attachment to the 1/60s you should still keep them and maybe put in a little overtime at work for the 1/100s. The hmr regult, glaug and monster are all confirmed releases. Hopefully they do make the other destroids and enemy units. I figure that a $60 to $150 release every couple of months isn't too difficult. Although that monster may be an exception price wise it's a must have for me. I haven't had a monster toy since the early 80s and that one doesn't look anywhere as good as the hmr. Quote
sharky Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 (edited) Collect the HMR if it suits your budget and you want more of your favorites. However keep the 1/60 valks that you already have. An HMR can't touch a 1/60th in design. You will miss them. Edited February 3, 2016 by sharky Quote
EXO Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 No, no no... get rid of your 1/60's. They're pieces of crap... PM Sent! Quote
Kanedas Bike Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 No, no no... get rid of your 1/60's. They're pieces of crap... PM Sent! Ha! And to answer the question "No" - I absolutely positively definitely with zero regrets would not give up my remaining VF-1's (or other models) in 1/60 for 1/100. At this stage in the game I'll cherry pick between the two, and *if* I had to choose, 1/60 wins. -b. Quote
Guest davidwhangchoi Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 the 1/100 scale are like 80's g.i. joe figures. the 1/60 like 80's transformers Quote
treatment Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I'm waiting for Arcadia to re-release the VF-1 variants I missed out on. Like the M&M and colored valks. There'll be less pinkish shenanigans on it. I reckon they'll do some expected price-jacking on their re-release, but most likely will be a bit less than the various scalpers peddling the old Yammies to current ludicrous pricings. I'm already collecting the HM-R line, but they're really not that satisfactory to me. Quote
seti88 Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 (edited) Imo the hi-metal line isnt that cheap? For that amt of plastic and size, i would have expected better pricing perhaps. So far have only put down for the regult and glaug as there arent much other equally realistic looking toys available. I think getting even a used v1 1/60 vf-1 yamato would be equivalent to a new 1/100 hi-metal vf-1 in terms of price. And if the opinion is that the v1 vf-1's have issues, well you arent exactly getting a perfect 1/100 hi-metal vf-1 either. The only reason i can see to get the hi-metal is for shelf space. jenius Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 What? A V1 1/60 VF-1 toy? Do you own one? The Hi-Metal is leaps better than those things and at 1/2 the size. There's no way the HMR line is a replacement for 1/60 V2 VF-1 toys. I'd echo others to either cherry pick or mix things up. Quote

Am comparing more on the price rather than quality, no doubt the hi-metal is newer but at a similar price you could get a used 1/60 valk. Scale your enjoyment of the valk accordingly Quote
Universe1010 Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Well I decided to mix up the scales, since it doesnt really matter to me. It makes it interesting. Quote
Ignacio Ocamica Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 The 1/60 scale still represents the most complete collection out there. There's no way I'm getting rid of my 1/60 valks/destroids/enemy mecha. Quote
Scyla Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I think both lines have their pros and cons. None of the lines will be complete but since you won't get 1/60 scale Destroids and enemy mecha. On the other hand Bandai might drop the HMR line if sales are not well. With the 1/60 line you have the benefit that now three companies releasing Valkyries in this scale (Bandai, Arcadia and ET) so you get a wider selection of stuff. That said I think when it comes down to it you have to follow your preferences. Do you have little display space and you like vastly different toys I would go with HMR because you can get Valkyries, enemy mecha, Destroids and maybe even an S.H.Figuarts Britai. If you like to put your toys into dioramas and/or playing with your toys a lot I would go for the HMRs If you are into complex engineering, built-in features, premium toys and you are interested in toys form other Macross shows I would say go with the 1/60 line. Yes Bandai showed entries for other Valkyries such as the VF-0 in the HMR line but as long as we don't have a fixed release date for them they might never come out. If you like static, museum like shelves where the single item is in focus I would prefer the 1/60 Valkyries. Price is not that big of an issue if you go neck deep into the HMR line because than you have to deal with a 1/100 Monster that will probably be in the $250 price range and maybe you are buying multiple Regults and cannon fodder to have a diorama. To sum it up. If you want a lot of different toys on your shelf that you can pick up and play with and you are fine with only having SDF:M/DYRL? items (for now) go with the HMR line. Quote
no3Ljm Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 My opinion is just wait and see before deciding on selling your 1/60's. I mean, money-wise, it's better to collect the 1/100's. Scale-wise it's easy to display. But for now, it's still early to decide since they just put out 5 units. And 2 of them not including the 3rd one which is just a repaint are modified version of the early Hi-Metal releases. So basically, 2 of them are brand new. Let the HM-R line grow first (let say like 10 'new' releases) before you decide on selling the big ones. And keep one or two for nostalgia purposes. Or keep your favorite VF-1. Quote
warrhead Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 (edited) The big ones are fun, but they cost so much my blood pressure is always a little too high where my 1/60-(DX) collection is concerned. I'm about three solid SDFM HMR announcements away from doing just this. Edited February 5, 2016 by warrhead Quote
Drad Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 (edited) I think I'm done with Yamato/Arcadia 1/60 scale, unfortunately. I can't afford to pay aftermarket prices to get all the ones I want. There's no telling if they'll ever re-issue the entire VF-1 line and even if they did, even the retail prices are way out of my range at this point. I just can't shell out $250-plus for every single piece that comes out. They were $130-$150 good, but definitely not worth $250-plus at the time of release. Also, I don't see them ever giving us enemy mecha. I'll keep the 1/60s I do have, but it looks like I'd be better served by Bandai's HI METAL R 1/100 line. A shame, really. I probably would've stuck with Yamato/Arcadia if their prices hadn't skyrocketed so much. Edited February 5, 2016 by Drad Quote
valhary Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 1/100 is to small for my taste and no so cheap as you might think unfortunately seems to be the future of the toy lines in general because the big companies like bandai want more money with less inversion so much so that already doing the same with other brands like saint seiya changing the myth cloths for panoramation Quote
Pedro2k6 Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Hell no. I will keep getting 1/60 scale. PS: I know price are high now....but if Bandai release 1 HMR a month for 100 or 80 dollar. ....why don't get 1 1/60 scale every 3 month (that Arcadia's frequency) Quote

PS: I know price are high now....but if Bandai release 1 HMR a month for 100 or 80 dollar. ....why don't get 1 1/60 scale every 3 month (that Arcadia's frequency) Because it doesn't look like I'll be able to get all the VF-1's I'm after, plus all the Destroids and enemy mecha, from Arcadia. They've had years to do it at this point and shown no signs of moving in that direction. So.. I'm out. And if by some miracle they DO put all of that stuff out, well, too bad. They made me wait longer than I was willing to and charge more than I can afford. They were/are a great company but I have to set limits somewhere. I'm just glad we have options now, compared to the days when we were all scrambling to find Chunky Monkeys on eBay. Quote
Mechapilot77 Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 honestly....the 1/60 toys are just more toy. sounds obvious but when you talk about replacing one wiht the other i think it needs a reminder. the 1/60 is more toy. more size, more gimmicks, more details, more accessories, better in a lot of respects...plus there are more of them.. the HMR is a really fun like though so far. the figures are nice to hanlde..don't feel cheap (but not premium like 1/60s are) and don't take much space. don't think i'd trade one in for th oether because it offers different things....if i had to ditch one...it'd be the 1/100 line...although i'd still get theglaug and regults though. It also looks like I'm a lot more likely to complete my collection with HMR. And yeah, I agree with you about what's happening with toys in general. My God, have you seen what's happening with mainline (non-MP) Transformers? Cheap, small, hollowed out with barely any paint! I know they're made for kids, but that's an insult. They're just a few degrees away from being Happy Meal toys. Marvel Cinematic Universe figures coming out at two inches tall, also lacking paint. Articulation getting cut even from supposed collector-focused lines like Star Wars Black Series. And that's just a few examples. Mainline stuff is really going down the tubes. Everything's getting smaller, less engineered, less detailed, more cheaply made and more expensive at retail. Edited February 5, 2016 by Drad Quote
Big s Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 If I were to go with 1/60 i would go with the bandai dx series for the simple fact that I hate stickers with a passion. For the price Arcadia is asking they should at least do more of the important markings. I also think the hmr 1s should at least have those arrows printed on the head. The regult and glaug markings look good so far though. Quote
fifbeat Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 (edited) The 1/100 Hi-Metal R line works out great for me. I agree, for what you get, they're not that cheap, BUT they are substantially cheaper than 1/60s. And right now is the time to start, since it's early on in the HMR game (no ridiculous catching up to do). If everything goes as planned, looks like they'll make a great, complete collection – especially with all the enemy mecha, Destroids, etc coming out. All to scale, all affordable – even if you do have to pay "premium" price from time to time. Crossing my fingers that all of 'em will get released. I currently have the released ones, and pre-ordered the ones that are releasing in the near future. Super excited. The 1/60s (V2), though beautiful to look at, were just too expensive (for me). They are the ultimate Macross product, but the 1/100 HMR feel better in the hand. You don't get all nervous around them. They feel more like toys, yet keep the "model" aesthetic. Generally, they look just as good as the 1/60s (in some cases, better). No worries about stickers, etc. They look good as is with the tempo printing they give ya. It'll be nice to have a common scale Macross collection and it looks like the HMR line might be the closest we'll ever get, especially if you don't have a whole lot of money to throw around. But hey, you gotta do what's best for you (in other words, sell your 1/60s before they yellow, buy the HMR line and have some extra cash in your pocket! left over... Filipino-style!!!)... jk Edited February 6, 2016 by fifbeat Quote
1/1 LowViz Lurker Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 My advice is keep 1/60. Buy HiMetal But just get major valks not the rare ones. Sell you house. Live in sewers like the ninja turtles. Then you'll have loads of money to buy macross toys living off pizza. Quote
QEssential Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 I cannot imagine giving up my 1/60 collection for the current Hi-Metal line. First of all the 1/100 Hi-metal has swappable parts while the 1/60 is true perfect transformation. Secondly, it is unlikely that Bandai releases would match Yamato/Arcadai in their variety. Quote
seti88 Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 hmmm am waiting for the day when there is a thread between 1/60 or 1/100 or...............1/144! That is if someone goes for releasing new 1/144 destroids/enemy mecha too. Sorry for the distraction..carry on... My advice is keep 1/60. Buy HiMetal But just get major valks not the rare ones. Jasonc Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 I have a feeling that this line may not go nearly as extensively as the 1/60 line, and that's OK. If the price is what fits your needs, and you feel comfortable at that price range, the simple choice is to go with what you want. I don't know a lot of people (don't know any) who are willing to part ways with one scale to jump onto another. I'm only going to get a couple of these Hi-Metal Rs and only because they are different from what I have now. If it was going to be a full line, I would consider going in on it, but even then, I have no need to repurchase more of the stuff I already have. Quote
Drad Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 I missed most of the 1/60's and frankly I'm not willing to wait for Arcadia to figure out which ones they want to give us (either as re-issues or new releases), when and for how much. They're taking way too long and I just don't want to drop that much cash every time they do put something out ($250-plus). I'm going to have to go with the HMR 1/100's. I think I've got a much better chance at completing my collection with them, and for quite a bit less money. I loved the 1/60's, they're absolutely beautiful toys.. but for me, that ship has sailed.
