This is a new art series that's been bubbling around my head for the past few months. See the DA page for the inspiration for it. Hopefully you all will get a kick out of it.

Comments appreciated.

I like the art. I think my proclivity toward over-analysis killed the humor for me. I mean, that giant bird is in the background, it hasn't been stopped, and when it is stopped there's not gonna be much of a VF-0A leftover... and even then, it's not the VF-0A that makes things happen, it's a suicidal Shin.

Okay yeah, I think I just suck at humor. I'd say that the tough guy award for Zero goes to the 0S though. I don't remember, was Roy still racking up kills after he lost the 0S's head?

EDIT - would definitely look forward to seeing more

@Jenius:

I approached it from the strategic sense, not so much the tactical sense (something like Roy fought the war, Shin won it or something like that). Though, I wanted to draw the VF-0A more than the VF-0S, and it's a better fit with the 'toughness defining joke'.

That said, I'm finding myself modifying #2 from a VF-1J to a VF-1S (that whole strategic sense thing, not that... uhm, shouldn't get ahead of myself).

@ Gerli

Having played VF-X2, I can say that despite the raw firepower of the VB-6, it just isn't that manoeuvrable, and ends up being a walking target that the enemies run circles around. The Full Armoured VF-11 rocked in that game (the nuke missile was lethal - especially if the player got too close to the blast!!!), but I always found myself using the VF-22.

Alas, neither the 22 nor the VB-6 are on the art list. But hey, it's not meant to be taken seriously. ;)

Piece #6: the VA-1SS

Some thoughts on the series in general:

I hope that you have enjoyed the completed art as much as I have enjoyed the journey. And I hope that some, if not all of the jokes worked for you.

The CG based VF-25 really killed me - so in some ways, getting back to a "simple" VF based on hand-drawn designs with the VA-1SS was refreshing (were you surprised that this series ended with MII?). On the other hand, it was super nostalgic, and helped me realize how much of an influence Macross II played on me when it was released (speaking artistically there - and that influence was pretty much superseded with the release of M+ and 7). And don't get me started about how much it felt like I was drawing Gundam when it came to parts of the VA-1SS and Gigameshu!

Anyhow, I had fun with this series (it's always fun to draw VFs, eh), and not only did I achieve my base goals with it, it helped me a bit along my artistic journey. That said, I still don't like the design of the VF-25, and as much as I'd like to continue this series with something on Macross Delta, I'm a bit leery of drawing the VF-30 and getting alienated by even more CG kibble.

Awhile (well, a long while) ago, someone asked me about posting images of the manga I've been working on (mostly off these past few years) here. Not posting that, but a 'what if' the CFs that appear in it were published in something like Macross Chronicle:

Hopefully it'll give those of us who were disappointed with the dearth of mecha action in Delta a much-needed Variable Fighter fix. ;)

Thanks for the kind words.  Positive feedback definitely gives an incentive to produce and reveal more!  :wink:

Finished the 3rd sheet in the series.  Direct linky: https://studiootaking.deviantart.com/art/CFs-Generation-2B-Master-File-Chronicle-708803627

Looking at the time-date stamp... gosh, has it really taken 11 months!?!  And here I was envisioning this project as something that I'd be able to whip out in a couple of months!  I guess that's a testament to how busy FT work and children are... T.T;;;

Hmm... I guess I didn't post about the 2nd set in this topic.  Well, here's the direct linky for that, too:

I like the TA/F-101 robot and aircraft form, very rusky design! :D

Thanks!

In fact, it was inspired by the Su-25 Frogfoot! :lol:

And hot off the presses, the 4th set in the "Master File Chronicle" series: https://www.deviantart.com/studiootaking/art/CFs-Generation-3a-Master-File-Chronicle-767383491

Hopefully it'll give someone their Variable Fighter fix until we get news on the (new?) Valkyries that'll be appearing in the upcoming Macross series. ;)
